It is somewhat astonishing that mines like this one are not permanently sealed to prevent accidental injury or death. The above Kean Wonder Mine in Death Valley National Park is well-preserved though entering it is strongly discouraged. So much work goes into creating these elaborate holes in the ground one would think they might find creative uses for them when the mineral or ore was completely depleted or no longer needed.
