I don't find this work sloppy at all, especially the paintings by Welsh. Each mark seems to be considered and deliberate. Artist's have long used the qualities of a chosen medium to 'speak for itself'. So thin dripping paint is allowed to run down the canvas... The fact that the artist's chooses to leave this mark makes it deliberate. Moore to the point we might ask why choose to distort the face. Is Welsh questioning ideas of Beauty? Or issues regarding concealment by whiting out aspects of a face. Or is this simply a style of painting that is influenced by street art seen in many urban environments?

mark welsh's work is always amazing... and if his characters get people calling them disturbing and grotesque, as in the case above, I think they have succeeded as they should.
