Invisible Boxes: Camouflaged Art Goes Postal, Hits the Street

Think: Liu Bolin‘s urban camouflage, but applied to packages that can stand to be left alone and attract, confuse and inspire passers by rather than requiring a person standing still.

Cayetano Ferrer likes putting prints on ordinary objects and capturing everyday scenes in strange ways on videos. This new project expands his approaches, covering a basic ready-to-ship box with a partial painting of the surrounding scenery.

It does not rely on extremes, but rather the tenuous realm of perception in between – the corners, stickers, stamps and other markings remain visible, but blur and blend into their context, creating a cognitive puzzle hard to solve even with a double-take.

Ferrer has an MFA from the University of Southern California Los Angeles CA and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Chicago IL, and takes queues from the gritty everyday urban context from each educational experience to projects like this one.
