Pull on the end, and what looks like a very ordinary sideboard at first glance starts to stretch… and stretch… and stretch. ‘Explosion’ by Sebastian Errazuriz is made up of slates of wood that have been joined together in such a way that the cabinet expands to absurdly unlikely proportions.

A wood-frame house is set into an old, broken chair base in this functional sculpture by Ted Lott, exploring the connections between furniture and architecture. The curves of the back of the home, including a terrace, echo those of the chair and still provide a place to sit (though it’s probably not quite as comfortable as the original surfaces.)

Completely ignoring the person who’s sitting across the table from you at dinner becomes a lot easier with the ‘Avoid Conversation’ table by Michael Beitz. The surface of the table rises into an arch in the center, blocking your view of each other. A similar design ties the center of the table in a gigantic knot.

Inspired by images of running horses, these two tables by designer Chul An Kwak look like they could literally get up and run away on their own. Beyond the skill required to carve those elegant appendages, crafting tables like these requires careful consideration of structural balance.
