Half of Tokyo’s instantly iconic Lucky Drops House by Atelier Tekuto is actually underground, with the visible portion enclosed mostly in a transparent skin to let sunlight permeate to the lower floors. The plot is less than three feet wide at the very back and just over nine feet wide at the front, requiring a trapezoidal shape to meet Japan’s rules for setbacks.

The same architects designed Mineral House in the center of Tokyo at the junction of two streets, with legal conditions requiring a series of cutouts in the exterior to keep it from encroaching on the street. The clients wanted a roofed garage and gave only the words ‘mineral’ and ‘reflection’ as starting points for the faceted design.
