Rio de Janiero boasted a number of championship-level golf courses so there really wasn’t any need to build yet one more exclusively for the Olympics. Well, some well-connected developers expressed a need, and never mind the location was a national wildlife reserve… WAS.

Months after the Olympic golfers picked up their balls and went home, the €19m course is looking a tad… rough. One wonders why those slum-dwellers displaced by the course’s construction haven’t taken to the sport and bought memberships. At least they could invite the wildlife back.

These abandoned prefabricated houses next to the Olympic golf course were built for and used during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but are now “maintained” by the Brazilian Golf Confederation for public use. Or misuse, as the case may be.

The Arena Carioca hosted basketball events but these days – regardless of Brazil being a world hoops power – the stadium is disused due to an ongoing funding crisis. Not sure what all the scaffolding is for but many of the entrances have already been bricked up.

The woman carrying her baby in front of the Deodoro Sports Complex where Olympic equestrian, rugby, field hockey and other events were held appears unimpressed by the signage on the fence which reads: “We are in recess for maintenance of the pool, we will return in January. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”. Ho Ho No.
