<p>If the standard camping trailer just isn’t extreme enough for you, maybe a compact ‘bug out trailer’ with monster wheels, a full kitchen and a pop-up roof tent will satisfy your survivalist impulses. Designed for adventurous off-roading types, these trailers are designed to facilitate max comfort no matter how far out into the wilderness you may wander.</p>
<h4>Schutt Xventure</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101474" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xventure-644x559.jpg" alt="xventure" width="644" height="559" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101473" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xventure-2-644x429.jpg" alt="xventure 2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101472" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/xventure-3-644x429.jpg" alt="xventure 3" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>From the same company building trailer platforms for the armed forces comes the <a href="http://www.schuttindustries.com/consumer.aspx">‘Xventure,’</a> a severe-duty trailer packed with military-grade gear. It’s got an all-aluminum weldless construction, electric brakes, a removable tailgate offering a heavy-duty work surface and a large front utility cabinet holding jerry cans, tools, lighting equipment and more.</p>
<h4>Turtleback Weekender</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101465" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/turtleback-weekender-644x429.jpg" alt="turtleback weekender" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101464" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/turtleback-weekender-2-644x424.jpg" alt="turtleback weekender 2" width="644" height="424" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101463" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/turtleback-weekender-3-644x364.jpg" alt="turtleback weekender 3" width="644" height="364" /></p>
<p>Made in Phoenix, Arizona, the <a href="http://turtlebacktrailers.com/2016/03/22/new-weekender-trailer/">Turtleback Weekender</a> is a lightweight aluminum trailer with marine-grade electrical components, Lockable exterior compartments, cargo rack, kitchen, shower and more. It has a small frame to fit standard family vehicles, so you don’t need a huge beefy truck to transport it. Use the roof rack to carry items like kayaks, and as an elevated tent platform.</p>
<h4>Tigermoth Trailer</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101499" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/tigermoth-trailer-2-644x427.jpg" alt="tigermoth trailer 2" width="644" height="427" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101498" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/tigermoth-trailer-3-644x427.jpg" alt="tigermoth trailer 3" width="644" height="427" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101456" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/tigermoth-trailer-4-644x435.jpg" alt="tigermoth trailer 4" width="644" height="435" /></p>
<p>This compact trailer is a workhorse, taking you off-grid in comfort while weighing just 900 pounds so it can be towed just about anywhere. The <a href="https://taxaoutdoors.com/ultra-light-trailers/tigermoth-camper-trailer/">Tigermoth camping trailer </a>boasts a side-hatch entrance, built-in LED lights, running water, power outlets, USB ports, a mounted toolbox, roof racks, cargo decks in the front and the back, and optional solar panels.</p>
<h4>Moab Fort by Bivouac Camping Trailer</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101462" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/bivouac-1-644x403.jpg" alt="bivouac 1" width="644" height="403" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101461" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/bivouac-2-644x403.jpg" alt="bivouac 2" width="644" height="403" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101460" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/bivouac-3-644x429.jpg" alt="bivouac 3" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101454" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/moab-644x362.jpg" alt="moab" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>“Designed to go beyond pavement where camp sites are declared, not rented,” the <a href="http://www.moabaz.com">Moab Fort by Bivouac Camping Trailer </a>makes off-grid exploration more comfortable without requiring a huge, bulky setup. It’s a small utility trailer packed with cargo space for bikes, canoes, tents, propane tanks and any other gear you want to bring along. Various parts extend outward, like tables and sun shades.</p>
<h4>OPUS Self-Inflating Camper Trailer</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101497" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/opus-trailer-1-644x282.gif" alt="opus trailer 1" width="644" height="282" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101496" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/opus-trailer-2-644x483.jpg" alt="opus trailer 2" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101495" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/opus-trailer-3-644x393.jpg" alt="opus trailer 3" width="644" height="393" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101494" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/opus-trailer-4-644x472.jpg" alt="opus trailer 4" width="644" height="472" /></p>
<p>The inside of this camper trailer is surprisingly swanky given its low profile, and unlike traditional pop-up camper trailers, the <a href="http://www.opuscamper.com">OPUS</a> self-inflates within 90 seconds into a well-ventilated multi-room space. The full setup includes a kitchen with a stove, sink and refrigerator and a seating area that converts into a bed.</p>

<p>Unlike The Maze and other classic puzzle books, the <a href="http://bw23brady.wixsite.com/portfolio/codex-silenda-project">Codex Silenda</a> brooks no cheating, forcing readers to solve elaborate puzzles on each page before proceeding to the next.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96295" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/puzzle-book-top-644x386.jpg" alt="puzzle book top" width="644" height="386" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96292" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/puzzle-design-details-644x398.jpg" alt="puzzle design details" width="644" height="398" /></p>
<p>Somewhere between a choose-your-own-adventure novel, a Chinese puzzle box and a blacksmith puzzle, this five-page volume features dizzyingly complex mechanical puzzles that can only be completed in sequence. In each pair of facing pages, a short story unfolds on one side while a related new puzzle is revealed on the other.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96293" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/laser-etched-wood-644x394.jpg" alt="laser etched wood" width="644" height="394" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96289" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/spinning-wheels-644x394.jpg" alt="spinning wheels" width="644" height="394" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96291" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/new-puzzle-644x398.jpg" alt="new puzzle" width="644" height="398" /></p>
<p>Designed by Brady Whitney, the wooden book is laser-cut and ornately detailed, full of hidden mechanisms worthy of Leonardo Da Vinci &#8211; indeed, the story itself is about an apprentice stumbling into the master&#8217;s workshop and becoming trapped inside the tome. The laser-burnt edges give the work a hand-crafted but careworn look, like something you might find in a mysterious antique shop, covered in dust.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96295" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/puzzle-book-top-644x386.jpg" alt="puzzle book top" width="644" height="386" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96288" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/book-flat-644x388.jpg" alt="book flat" width="644" height="388" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>From the makers: &#8220;Codex Silenda is a five page book that features five intricate puzzles. Each page features a unique puzzle that requires the user/reader to unlock the corresponding bolts in order to progress to the next page.&#8221; More about its maker: &#8220;Brady Whitney is the designer of the operation, the mastermind of the Codex. He originally came up with the idea for his senior thesis research project during his final semester at Iowa State University. Having grown up with a childhood filled with imagination, his passion for design has always been focused on the realm of toys and games, creating the products and ideas he always wished he had as a kid.&#8221;</p>

<p>After winding their way up a hundred-foot-tall pathway in the Czech Republic set atop a mountain peak (itself located over 3,000 feet above sea level), visitors are presented with two options: walk all the way back down, or take a ride on the slide that shoots back down through the center of the spiralling walkways on all sides.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87668" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-spiral-walkway-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain spiral walkway" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87667" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-viewing-net-platform-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain viewing net platform" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Another feature for daredevils comes in the form of netting suspended from a section along the top. Those who wish to can walk and lay on this mesh, experiencing whatever level of terror they can tolerate.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87666" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-steel-suspended-wood-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain steel suspended wood" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87662" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-in-fog-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain in fog" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Fránek Architects designed this massive wooden structure, dubbed Sky Walk and aimed at giving viewers a number of twists, turns and chances to find the perfect vista while they work their way up.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87665" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-views-below-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain views below" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87660" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-path-brave-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain path brave" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>&#8220;It offers an endless amount of views, situations and moments where an indiscernible human being enters the depth and emerges on the outskirts of this natural structure,&#8221; said Fránek.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87663" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-emergency-exit-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain emergency exit" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87661" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-structural-supports-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain structural supports" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>The pathways are suspended from a central structural core made up of metal-joined wood trusses, forming a space frame that also supports the stainless steel slide more brave guests will opt to take for their return trip.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87664" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-central-truss-frame-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain central truss frame" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Located as it is on top of a tall and exposed mountain, the structure is heavily reinforced throughout and tied to concrete footings buried deep in the ground. It also features an emergency spiral staircase down its center. Travelers can get to this wheel-accessible pedestrian viewing spiral via a chairlift at the foot of the mountain, near Dolni Morava.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87669" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-architecture-distance-468x334.jpg" alt="mountain architecture distance" width="468" height="334" /></p>

<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know of any other timber construction with steel elements of a similar size and purpose,&#8221; Fránek said. &#8220;There are constructions of a similar size but ours takes on an abstract form that suggests the flight of a nocturnal butterfly whose path is seemingly chaotic.&#8221;</p>

<p>Clinging to a craggy cliff like an oversized artificial barnacle, this pod is only accessible to those willing to scale the 400-foot rock face from the base of a Peruvian mountain. If you’re brave and hardy enough to pull off that feat, you’ll probably do just fine taking up residence in a hotel room that the rest of us will only ever have nightmares about. In addition to its precarious location, the <a href="http://www.naturavive.com/index.php/en/skylodge-adventure-suites-en">Natura Vive Skylodge</a> is completely transparent, so you can’t exactly forget that you’re hundreds of feet in the air while inside.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81682" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-2-468x264.png" alt="skylodge 2" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81685" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-5-468x262.jpg" alt="skylodge 5" width="468" height="262" /></p>
<p>As fragile as they look, these three pods are made of aerospace aluminum and weather-resistant polycarbonate, so they’re not likely to be blown down or punctured in a storm. At 25 feet long and 8 feet wide, each one is spacious enough to accommodate eight guests, offering comfortable beds, a dining room and even a private bathroom.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81684" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-4-468x312.jpg" alt="skylodge 4" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-81683 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-3-468x351.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>The journey to the pod is actually safer than it looks, as climbers can be tied to a steel cable as they traverse the trails, with ladders and bridges helping them to the top. This zipline route offers alternate access for those who aren’t experienced enough to make the climb. You can even hook yourself to the cables as you perch on a wooden observation deck positioned atop each pod, looking out over the valley.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-81687 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-7-468x351.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81686" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/skylodge-6-468x234.jpg" alt="skylodge 6" width="468" height="234" /></p>
<p>Solar panels capture energy to power four interior lamps and a reading light, and the ‘sink’ and toilet are dry. The roughly $300-per-person-per-night fee includes transportation to and from your hotel, guides, equipment, snacks, a gourmet dinner with a bottle of wine and an al fresco breakfast.</p>

<p>An art installation with a side of rugged adventure, the Social Pool is a project open to the public but locked and with a location only revealed via coordinates that lead visitors on a long trek to its discovery.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68821" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/desert-secret-hidden-pool-468x262.jpg" alt="desert secret hidden pool" width="468" height="262" /></p>
<p>Seekers must first travel to the <a href="http://makcenter.org/">MAK Center for Art and Architecture</a> in West Hollywood and retrieve one of four keys that open the pool, and will be tasked with taking one gallon water to help refill it as well. Los Angeles area travelers do not stumble upon it by accident &#8211; it is not on any road, trail or path.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68815" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/social-pool-uncovered-sand-468x312.jpg" alt="social pool uncovered sand" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Keys are to be returned within 24 hours, whether or not you find the secret spot and uncover the cool pool of filtered water, powered by solar panels. You cannot reserve a key in advance &#8211; you must show up and see if one is available. Uncertainty is part of the experience, like it or not.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68819" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/social-pool-remote-desert-468x351.jpg" alt="social pool remote desert" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Designed by Austrian artist <a href="http://www.alfredobarsuglia.com/">Alfredo Barsugli</a>, <a href="http://laist.com/2014/06/30/we_found_that_little_pool_hidden_in.php#photo-1">LAist</a> describes it as something<em> &#8220;meant to reflect on the lengths humans would go to in the pursuit of luxury,&#8221;</em> but also as a good excuse to spend some time exploring an amazing desert landscape.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68820" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/underground-beauty-resort-installation-468x312.jpg" alt="underground beauty resort installation" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68823" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/underground-desert-spa-sand-468x263.jpg" alt="underground desert spa sand" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>Barsugli is not new to strange desert installations &#8211; a previous piece, the Oderfla Beauty Resort, featured a spa building semi-submerged in desert sand.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-68818" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/social-pool-art-installation-468x351.jpg" alt="social pool art installation" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>It is also worth stocking up on gas, food and water and watching out for snakes, lizards and hares along the way. Hint: the pool is not close to the MAK. Its position is only given broadly to the public: somewhere in the southern Mojave Desert between Joshua Tree and Apple Valley. Images by Alfredo Barsugli and Juliet Bennett Rylah of LAist.</p>
