    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112601" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/flat-pack-ikea-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Putting IKEA manuals into augmented reality, this phone app lets buyers scan their product&#8217;s barcode, then swipe to follow steps in realtime against the actual backdrop of the room being used for furniture construction. Developed by Toronto designer Adam Pickard, <a href="https://vimeo.com/260710101">AssembleAR</a> uses 3D modelling coupled with post-production editing to recreate the building experience.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112600" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/swipegif-644x644.gif" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>Pickard was inspired by the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/08/06/virtual-interior-design-augmented-reality-ikea-2014-catalog/">IKEA Place</a> app that allowed people to see what specific pieces of furniture would look like in their own home, as well as the frustrations sometimes associated with building the company&#8217;s signature flat-pack systems.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112599" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/scan-code-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>The other app, he says, &#8220;made me think about how this technology could be used for more complex tasks, the IKEA assembly manual seemed the right place to start. Even though it&#8217;s well designed, people often struggle with the self-assembly – it can even be so bad that there are professionals who can be hired to do it for you.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112598" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/step-one-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Technically, while the focus of the app is IKEA, it isn&#8217;t an official product of theirs, and could be expanded to encompass other furniture makers. It does, however, draw on the IKEA manual aesthetic and process, adapted in Cinema 4D but rendered to look much like the original instruction sets.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112597" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/screw-details-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>As an added perk, though, swiping through the first few steps can show you how much space you&#8217;ll need to set aside in order to lay out construction materials and tools (since these illustrate the initial unboxing and laying out of parts).</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/260710101' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Between swipes, each page details the elements (surfaces, legs, connectors, etc&#8230;) needed in a give step, designed using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. While others have adapted IKEA instructions to make them more clear, the focus of this app is to stick to the prescribed route but grasp it in a three-dimensional way.</p>

<p>FaceApp and similar reality-warping applications are especially fun to use in ways their designers never intended. Along similar lines, Google&#8217;s DeepDream (designed for photo manipulation) creates fascinating results using photographs but is even more stunning when applied to representations of cityscapes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103395" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/trip-maps-644x472.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="472" /></p>
<p>While training DeepDream (a neural network that adapts like a brain to new inputs) to identify, differentiate and understand images, Google researchers discovered it could &#8220;over-interpret&#8221; results as well. In short: it could start to &#8220;read into&#8221; images from previous experience, resulting in an array of beautiful (if disturbing) hybrids.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-103392" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/deep-dream-example.png" alt="" width="620" height="506" /></p>
<p>Once it went public, mapmakers were among those intrigued by the possibilities of geo-visualization, turning flat maps into seemingly living landscapes. Tim Waters, a geospatial developer, began taking OpenStreetMap data and running it through the system, generating these strangely psychedelic urban environments.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103396" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/trippy-maps-644x341.png" alt="" width="644" height="341" /></p>
<p>He discovered that a short run could create fractal and quilting effects, while longer and reiterated processing started to introduce faces and creatures to the mix.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103393" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/crazy-map-644x539.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="539" /></p>
<p>Above: monkeys and frogs seem to emerge from the grid, while a coastal region forms the head of a bear, making the landscape look like a giant bearskin rug. Overall, the effects are quite beautiful, creating a sense of depth and adding character to what would otherwise be fairly generic representations.</p>

<p>Promising the convenient pick-ups of Uber (found all over) and drop-offs of Car2Go (which can be parked anywhere), new cycle-sharing services aim to overturn the paradigm of dock-to-ride-to-dock. A single company in China has already put more than a million such bicycles on the streets. Users simply pull up an app to locate the closest bike then unlock it digitally by scanning a QR code.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/208468915' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Anyone who has used dock-based bike sharing systems know they come with problems &#8212; they might not be close by, or could be filled (when you&#8217;re dropping off) or empty (when you&#8217;re picking up). On the automobile front, similar issues with some sharing companies have been solved by allowing users to leave cars wherever they want. This can result in concentrations of cars, though, that need to be spread back out &#8212; and a similar problem exists for bikes.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/DnjY-_IHCLs?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>While small but similar programs exist elsewhere, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/mar/22/bike-wars-dockless-china-millions-bicycles-hangzhou">The Guardian</a> describes the problem as it has unfolded in China: &#8220;Seven hundred miles to the south-west, on the streets of the fast-growing Pearl River manufacturing hub of Guangzhou, the colourful dockless share bikes are everywhere. They are parked up by the hundred outside shopping malls and metro stations, often blocking the pavement; others, rendered useless by missing saddles, broken locks.&#8221; In other places, the shared bikes are piled up in alleys and vacant lots.</p>
<p>Some companies believe that docking stations are the long-term solution, but others continue to experiment with alternative approaches, like: marking out preferred spots on the sidewalk then adding or deducting credits based on bike drop-off placement. For now, though, these reports have to be done manually, relying on crowd-sourced participants. As GPS gets more accurate, though, it may be possible to do this automatically. In a way, this method would replace physical stations by creating virtual ones in the form of acceptable micro-areas on the digital map.</p>

<p>Whether you want to get to know your own city on a deeper level or explore secret spots in unfamiliar places, this collection of smartphone apps will take you on adventures you&#8217;d otherwise miss. Check out these scavenger hunts, walking tours, history lessons, interactive tasks that take you on random routes, user-submitted local favorites and other ways to interact with urban environments in fun and unexpected ways.</p>
<h4>Derivé: Random Tasks Send You on an Adventure</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-99189" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-app-derive.jpg" alt="urbex-app-derive" width="623" height="516" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/4kTukct98vA?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Explore your city &#8211; or an unfamiliar city &#8211; in a totally new way with the<a href="http://deriveapp.com/s/v2/"> Derivé app,</a> which randomly assigns you a task to do, like “find your favorite building”, “follow a hat,” “sit for two minutes” or “find a tree.” Refreshed every three minutes, the task cards lead you on a single-person scavenger hunt that will encourage you to take routes you’d never take otherwise and experience your environment in a new way.</p>
<h4>History Pin: See History in Real Time</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99186" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-history-pin-1-644x429.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-history-pin-1" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99185" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-app-history-pin-2-644x428.jpg" alt="urbex-app-history-pin-2" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99184" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-app-history-pin-3-644x322.png" alt="urbex-app-history-pin-3" width="644" height="322" /></p>
<p>This <a href="https://www.historypin.org/en/">user-generated history map</a> lets you see what cities used to look like thanks to submitted historical photographs, which are pinned onto their real-life locations. The app uses Google Maps and Street View technology to overlay the historic photos onto the live camera view. Just hold up your phone in the street, and it’ll give you a glimpse of the past.</p>
<h4>Spotted by Locals: Get the Inside Scoop</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99183" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-spotted-by-locals-644x429.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-spotted-by-locals" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99182" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-spotted-by-locals-2-644x383.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-spotted-by-locals-2" width="644" height="383" /></p>
<p>When you’re traveling, it’s easy enough to wander randomly without the use of a smartphone or simply go by tourist guide recommendations, but finding out what locals love can be more challenging. The<a href="http://www.spottedbylocals.com/app/"> Spotted by Locals app </a>tells you what’s popular in any given spot, and it’s constantly updated to keep track of business openings and closings.</p>
<h4>Geocaching: Treasure Hunting Challenge</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99180" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-geocaching-644x397.png" alt="urbex-apps-geocaching" width="644" height="397" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99179" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-geocaching-2-644x429.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-geocaching-2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.geocaching.com/account/welcome">classic treasure-hunting app</a> that has explorers digging for cleverly hidden containers called ‘geocaches’ remains the most popular way to participate in the adventure. The Geocaching app shows you geocaches near your location, allows you to message other players for hints and log the treasures you’ve found.</p>
<h4>Geo Street Art Apps for New York City &amp; London</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99169" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-street-art-2-644x429.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-street-art-2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99170" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/urbex-apps-street-art-644x446.jpg" alt="urbex-apps-street-art" width="644" height="446" /></p>
<p>Available for major cities like New York City and London, the <a href="http://geostreetart.com">Geo Street Art apps</a> feature hundreds of local and international street artists, pointing you to their work so you can see it in person. ‘Street Art London’ and ‘Street Art New York City’ provide a “comprehensive reference point” of the street art scene, including artist biographies. The London version boasts over 600 images from over 90 artists in 270 locations.</p>

<p>Bringing a critical gap between 3D scanning technology and functional outputs for architects, designers and homeowners, Canvas can scan a room in minutes then generate useful CAD software files.</p>

<p>Raw scans of spaces can be helpful in terms of generating rough measurements and usable as a baseline for a more rigorous three-dimensional model, but it takes time and energy to translate between the two. So while they are great for point-to-point measurements and as-built drawings, such scans are limited in terms of letting someone rework or envision changes to a structure.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98524" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3d-sensor-technology-644x363.jpg" alt="3d-sensor-technology" width="644" height="363" /></p>
<p><a href="http://occipital.com/" target="_blank">Occipital</a>, the startup behind <a href="http://structure.io/" target="_blank">Structure Sensor</a>, wants to make that transition smooth, painless and effectively automatic. After a users scans a room (or a whole house) with their iPad, they can send away for CAD files that will be returned in two business days. They can then plug those files into software of choice, like Sketchup, and begin remodeling their space.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98525" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3d-design-capture-644x483.jpg" alt="3d-design-capture" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The company calls their vision &#8220;augmented home&#8221; and pictures their software and hardware getting increasingly refined over time to the point where on-the-spot shots can be immediately transformed into precise and full-color 3D files.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98526" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3d-space-model-644x362.jpg" alt="3d-space-model" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;ll probably look back at today as a time, just like the 1830s, when we just started to have photographs,&#8221; says Adam Rodnitzky, the company&#8217;s VP of marketing. &#8220;We&#8217;re now entering the era when we&#8217;re going to start having a 3D record of the world around us.&#8221;</p>
