<p>Unless you&#8217;re a lotto winner or an English lord in search of a new manor, you&#8217;re probably not actually in the market for a castle, but these real estate listings range from the real multi-million-dollar deal in Europe to Medieval-Times-style houses in Florida and Kentucky. Maybe you&#8217;re ready to act on your dreams of living in a turret in the remote Scottish highlands, or maybe you and some friends want to go in on a budget-friendly Bay Area castle that&#8217;s just begging for some LARP action.</p>
<h4>Château d’Aubiry, Perpignan, France</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99579" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-1-644x383.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-1" width="644" height="383" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99578" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-2-644x420.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-2" width="644" height="420" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99577" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-3-644x338.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-3" width="644" height="338" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99576" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-4-644x430.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-4" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99575" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-5-644x390.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-chateau-daubiry-5" width="644" height="390" /></p>
<p>Set in the French mountain chain of Les Apres just a few kilometers from the Spanish border, <a href="http://www.messynessychic.com/2016/12/05/heres-someone-selling-a-belle-epoque-chateau-on-the-french-version-of-craigslist/">this Belle Epoque chateau </a>is on the market for the second time since 2011. Most of its original furniture is still in place, and its greenhouses were installed by Gustave Eiffel. It’s listed for $13.16 million, half of what it sold for last time around.</p>
<h4>Mary of Scots Castle, Scotland</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99566" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-644x361.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots" width="644" height="361" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99565" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-2-644x429.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99564" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-3-644x429.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-3" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99563" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-4-644x429.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-mary-of-scots-4" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>This castle is definitely legit. It’s 500 years old, and was once home to Mary of Scots (before she became Queen.) <a href="http://www.struttandparker.com/properties/cleish-kinross-kinross-shire-ky13">Cleish Castle</a> features 8 bedrooms, and on its 26 acres, Scotland’s oldest yew trees grow &#8211; planted in 1620. Its interiors underwent significant renovations during the 20th century, so you won’t exactly get drafty stone castle charm, but that may or may not be a good thing, depending on your tastes. It’s listed at $1.85 million.</p>
<h4>Medieval Knockhall Castle, England</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99562" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-knockhall-1-644x400.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-knockhall-1" width="644" height="400" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99561" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-knockhall-2-644x400.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-knockhall-2" width="644" height="400" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99560" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-knockhall-3-644x400.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-knockhall-3" width="644" height="400" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99559" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-knockhall-4-644x400.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-knockhall-4" width="644" height="400" /></p>
<p>You know those <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/10/24/architectural-interventions-12-radical-modern-changes-to-historic-buildings/">before-and-after architecture projects</a> that take an old shell of a castle and transform it into a modern wonder? This <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2265025/medieval-16th-century-castle-once-visited-by-james-vi-goes-on-sale-for-just-150000-after-being-left-to-ruins-but-it-will-take-some-cash-to-fix-up/">medieval castle in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire</a> is just begging for the same treatment. Billed as “the ultimate fixer-upper,” it’s literally in ruins at the moment, with a price tag of about $186,000, but imagine the potential. Knockhall Castle dates back to 1565 and was once visited by King James VI.</p>
<h4>Castle with Drawbridge in California</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99558" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-california-1-644x429.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-california-1" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99557" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-california-2-644x429.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-california-2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99556" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-california-3-644x430.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-california-3" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99555" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-california-4-644x430.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-california-4" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99554" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/castles-for-sale-california-5-644x430.jpg" alt="castles-for-sale-california-5" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>The original owner of <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/realestate/article/Castle-California-major-price-cut-849-000-8525702.php">this ‘castle’ in San Bernardino, California</a> got the idea to build it after visiting Europe and falling in love with castle architecture. He faithfully recreated it on his own, from the drawbridge and turrets to the stables with their bright-red doors &#8211; in a style that’s a little bit Medieval Times, a little bit Robin Hood cartoon. But you can’t really argue with getting an entire castle for $849,000 when ordinary homes in the Bay Area go for an average of $1.1 million.</p>

Waterfalls stream down the sides of mountain-shaped, moss-covered structures, while white horses gallivant in front of castles that look like they were ripped right out of a book of fairytales. These 15 hotels are among the most magical places to stay anywhere in the world, from ancient palaces in India to gleaming ice hotels in Quebec. While some are a peek at how the 1% live, others are surprisingly affordable.</p>
<h4>Magic Mountain Hotel, Chile</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-67266" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Magical-Hotels-Magic-Mountain-2.jpg" alt="Magical Hotels Magic Mountain 2" width="468" height="312" /><br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-67269" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Magical-Hotels-Magic-Mountain-Lodge-Chile.jpg" alt="Magical Hotels Magic Mountain Lodge Chile" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>If elves took up residence in Hobbiton, this is what their homes would look like.<a href=" http://travel.spotcoolstuff.com/hotel-review/huilo-huilo-chile/la-montana-magica-nothofagus"> The mountain-shaped structure</a> is dotted with arched windows and obscured with lush greenery. Waterfalls stream down the sides to drench the moss, ferns and flowers. Located within the remote Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve, the hotel requires an adventurous spirit to even access, but it&#8217;s well worth the effort. Nearly everything is constructed from locally, sustainably sourced wood.</p>
<h4>Neemrana Fort Palace, India</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-67267" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Magical-Hotels-Neemrana.jpg" alt="Magical Hotels Neemrana" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>A 15th-century palace built into the hillside in India is now a five-star, 55-bedroom hotel with kingly views over the nearby village. <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-2618549/Inside-stunning-15th-century-Neemrana-Fort-Palace-built-hillside-thats-converted-luxury-hotel.html">Neemrana Fort Palace</a> is full of authentic decor from periods throughout India&#8217;s history and contains displays that educate guests about the palace&#8217;s fascinating past. Though rooms here start at just £50 per night, guests are given the royal treatment, with options including poolside spa treatments and hot balloon rides over the valley.</p>
<h4>Fairytale Hotel in Belgium</h4>

<p>Sleep in a surreal medieval-style chamber within a massive wooden Trojan Horse at <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/02/14/surreal-la-balade-des-gnomes-hotel-offers-fantasy-getaway/">Belgium&#8217;s La Balade des Gnomes Hotel</a>. This bizarre retreat boasts ten unique rooms sculpted with the natural earthen building material known as cob to create all sorts of curved custom surfaces. The horse is just one of the hotel&#8217;s suites &#8211; others include a troll&#8217;s lair and a Macquarie Island room with a boat-shaped bed.</p>
<h4>Crazy House Hotel, Dalat, Vietnam</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67287" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Weirdest-Hotels-Crazy-House-11.jpg" alt="Weirdest Hotels Crazy House 1" width="468" height="624" /><br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-67286" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Weirdest-Hotels-Crazy-House-21.jpg" alt="Weirdest Hotels Crazy House 2" width="468" height="696" /></p>
<p>The aptly named <a href="http://inhabitat.com/hang-nga-crazy-house-is-a-creepy-fairy-tale-treehouse-in-vietnam/hang-nga-crazy-house-hotel/">Crazy House Hotel in Vietnam</a> began as the private residence of architect Hang Viet Nga, who clearly let her imagination run wild in creating an organically shaped structure reminiscent of the Barcelona ouvre of Antoni Gaudi. Made from the base of a dead tree, the house is full of ladders leading into hidden nooks and through tight tunnels. Rooms cost as little as $22 USD per night.</p>
<h4>Thorngrove Manor Hotel, Adelaide, Australia</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-67273" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Magical-Hotels-Thorngrove.jpg" alt="Magical Hotels Thorngrove" width="468" height="482" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.thorngrove.com.au/">Thorngrove Manor Hotel</a> could easily double as a princess castle at Disneyland, it&#8217;s so picturesque. Located in Adelaide, Australia, the castle-like structure looks centuries-old but was actually built in 1994 as part of a vineyard. Though all the rooms are together in one building, there are no common spaces, and couples staying there never need to see other guests.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-863" title="castle-hotels" alt="Castle Hotels" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/castle-hotels.jpg" width="468" height="306" /></p>
<p><!--wsa:gooold-->Imagine curling up in front of an 800 year old fireplace where a king once rested (or was arrested!). Many castle hotels once belonged to (or were used to imprison) kings, queens and other royalty as far back as the 1300s. Regardless of your budget there is a cozy fortress or magnificent castle hotel to be found in virtually any part of Europe, some parts of Africa and Asia and even in a few places in the United States. From Britain to the United States and Morocco to France here are 8 impressive places you can literally live like royalty &#8211; at least for one night.</p>
<p><span id="more-851"></span><br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-852" title="amberly-castle-hotel" alt="British Castle Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/amberly-castle-hotel.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>At nearly 1000 years old, <a title="Amberly Castle Hotel" href="http://www.amberleycastle.co.uk/">Amberly Castle</a> has virtually seen it all. It was once owned by Queen Elizabeth the first and its walls were attacked long ago by Cromwell. Even now the Portcullis is raised each morning and lowered each night. This in addition to a 60 foot thick outer wall is sure to keep out trespassers. The exterior might be rustic but the interior is anything but antiquated. This rather luxurious castle hotel curiously features a tennis court, 18-hole putting course and jacuzzi bathrooms.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-858" title="german-castle-hotel" alt="German Castle Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/german-castle-hotel.jpg" width="468" height="576" /></p>
<p>While some of these castle hotels are lavishly decorated, gloriously restored and a haven for tourists and overnight guests alike, castles like <a title="Burg Gutenfels on the Rhine" href="http://www.rhinecastles.com/hotel-burg-gutenfels/">Burg Gutenfels</a> on Germany&#8217;s Rhine River prefer to stay off the beaten path and remain intentionally more rustic. The rooms come complete with antiquated leaded-glass windows, creaky floors and faded tapestries pronouncing in disappearing scripts the former residents of the castle. In one small turret secluded there is even a secluded dining table for two.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-859" title="mountaintop-castle-hotel" alt="Mountain Castle Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/mountaintop-castle-hotel.jpg" width="468" height="625" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/yChz7VUbpUM?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>And if you think the German castle hotel above is rustic, the <a title="Morocco Castle Hotel" href="http://www.kasbahdutoubkal.com/index.html">Kasbah du Toubkal</a> sits at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa &#8211; incredibly removed from typical civilization. Whereas you might arrive at your other castle locations by private plane or limousine this Moroccan fortress hotel is unreachable by motor vehicles &#8211; a donkey is a typical traveler&#8217;s best bet. You might think that would make this place inexpensive to stay in but it is remarkably fancy for its remote location and still costs a few hundred dollars per night &#8211; not to mention the cost of getting this far away from civilization.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-860" title="malta-palace-hotel" alt="Malta Palace Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/malta-palace-hotel.jpg" width="468" height="386" /></p>
<p>The Xara Palace Hotel is located on the Mediterranean Island of Malta in th fortified city of Mdina. This palace has served as home to noble families and was used by the British in the second world war. It has since been immaculately restored and provides amazing views on adjacent landscapes. Due to its relatively remote location (off the beaten tourist trails) this is a rather luxurious destination that most people don&#8217;t think to visit when they are in Europe &#8211; a worth-visiting out-of-the-way spot.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-861" title="entire-castle-rental" alt="Entire Castle Rental" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/entire-castle-rental.jpg" width="468" height="536" /></p>
<p>Some (more affordable) castle hotels can be stayed in for under 100 dollars per night while other (more luxurious) castles can be rented out in their entirety at prices best left unmentioned. <a title="Longs Park Castle" href="http://www.chooseacottage.co.uk/webparts/part_detail.asp">Long&#8217;s Park Castle</a> falls into the latter category &#8211; a splendid sanctuary that can be completely rented for exclusive group retreats. Original beamed ceilings, stone walls and other features date back to the construction of the castle and each room comes complete with its own spiral staircase access.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-854" title="french-chateau-hotel1" alt="French Castle Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/french-chateau-hotel1.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p><a title="Chateau St Philippe" href="http://www.chateausp.com/introduction.htm">Chateau St. Philippe</a> is one of the oldest castle hotels in the world and sits in a picturesque small town (complete with open-air French markets and smelly cheese shops) at the foot of the alps. It was built by monks in the mid-1000s but fell into disrepair in the 1300s and was restored over the next few centuries. It was passed down within a wealthy family before being sold for 100,000 pounds in the early 1800s. Finally, in 2001 the chateau was purchased by Americans and turned into a group retreat space that accommodates small parties of 20.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-855" title="french-castle-hotel" alt="French Castle Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/french-castle-hotel.jpg" width="468" height="462" /></p>
<p>If you plan to stay safely in a castle it can&#8217;t hurt to be surrounded by a real-life moat. Though at this castle the moat didn&#8217;t save a thirteenth-century king from being imprisoned in his own tower. Up to 250 guests can stay in the <a title="French Castle Hotel" href="http://www.chateaudesaint-loup.com/">Chateau de Saint-Loup</a> for everything from private vacations to wedding or other celebrations. Rooms are done in up in medieval style with four-poster beds and stained-glass windows. Ancient gardens are kept in use, growing fresh fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-857" title="new-york-fortress-hotel1" alt="New York Fortress Hotel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/new-york-fortress-hotel1.jpg" width="468" height="462" /></p>
<p>We all know the United States is simply too young to find actual castles, right? Well, you won&#8217;t any castle in the traditional sense for sure but there is one <a title="Castle on the Hudson" href="http://www.castleonthehudson.com/">faux-mideival fort</a> (though it is only a few hundred years old) amazingly less than 30 miles from Manhattan. You can even see New York City from the turrets! Of course the only authentic element is an actual dining from of Louis XIV that was physically brought to the US and reassembled on site. Still, for those who can&#8217;t afford to fly to Europe for a castle hotel vacation this will do in a pinch.</p>
