<p>At a depth of nearly 100 feet, what could possibly explain these radially-symmetrical patterns appearing on the ocean floor off the coast of Japan, like some kind of extra-terrestrial snow angel or uncannily-submersed sand castle?</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43016" title="underwater mystery sand castle" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/underwater-mystery-sand-castle.jpg" width="468" height="592" /></p>
<p>One photographer and diver chose to find out the source of these six-foot-diameter wonders, and documented their submarine exploration as well as the surprise explanation they uncovered &#8211; not aliens, nor humans, but an artist native to this exotic habitat.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/YWtmSoimhcM?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p><a href="http://ookatayouji.amaminchu.com/">Yoji Ookata</a> found a series of small male fish working tirelessly, day in and night out, to craft these mate-attracting marvels using a single fin.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43015" title="underwater ocean floor fortress" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/underwater-ocean-floor-fortress.jpg" width="468" height="800" /></p>
<p>At the center of their organic sand mandalas is the eventual hatching ground for the eggs of the species&#8217; female, lured in by the bumps and grooves of the sculpture. In the end, these surprisingly-human fortifications help protect against jostling currents and potential predators.</p>

<p>Break open even the dullest rock and you may reveal amazing quartz or other crystals in radiant whites, blues, purples and reds. This street art project exposes parallel formations in cracked concrete, broken brick and rusted pipes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-39261" title="geode pipe art project" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/geode-pipe-art-project.jpg" width="468" height="609" /></p>
<p><a href="http://acommonname.com/street-art-project/">A Common Name</a> &#8211; freelance artist and graphic designer based out of Los Angeles &#8211; skips two-dimensional methods to make 3D paper sculptures that morph to fit various shapes and sizes of empty spaces found walking city streets.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-39262" title="geode rock art installation" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/geode-rock-art-installation.jpg" width="468" height="386" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;A parallel aspect of these “geodes” in nature and in the city is they are always unexpected treasures. You might go hunting &#8230; but generally happen upon them during your adventures or casual interaction with the environment.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-39260" title="geode colorful natural formations" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/geode-colorful-natural-formations.jpg" width="468" height="523" /></p>
<p>Sure, they disappear over time &#8211; stolen, broken or simply washed away &#8211; but that is part of the point: once exposed, geodes are fragile and subject to the forces of nature, time and greed.</p>
