    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115571" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/handbot.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>This robotic &#8220;smart&#8221; planter wanders around on six articulated legs to make sure your precious greens get enough natural light, prompting the <a href="https://twitter.com/sevensixfive/status/1017460550962380801">observation</a>: &#8220;This is called a cat. You&#8217;ve invented a cat.&#8221;</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115575" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/robotplant.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>And there&#8217;s something to the comparison &#8212; cats self-regulate, so why not plants? Heliotropism draws plantlife naturally to the sun for nutrients, causing owners to shift around their habitats, but there&#8217;s no need with this bot. It can even stomp to demand water, like an impatient pet.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115573" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bouncingplant.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>Developed by Vincross in China, the self-optimizing micro-robot can walk around and make sure any houseplant gets sufficient sun or shade. The HEXA was originally a simple walker, until its inventor put a pot into it.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115572" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/petplant.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>So the whole thing may seem (and be) a bit silly, but it does add some interactivity to a home, particularly for people who aren&#8217;t around enough to take care of animals (or perhaps even an idle houseplant). Also, it&#8217;s a pretty good way for a robotics manufacturer to get people interested in their products.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115576" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/plantbot.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Robots are THE next big platform. We&#8217;ve all dreamed of a world where robots interact with and help humans in their daily lives. But the reality is, robots have a long way to go. Limited access — robots are either too expensive and complex isolated to a lab or too simplistic, a child&#8217;s toy — has kept innovators, explorers and the masses at bay.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-115574" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/gplant.gif" alt="" width="480" height="270" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Meet HEXA, the first of a new generation of accessible, programmable robots from Vincross. HEXA is a six-legged, highly maneuverable, compact robot that comes complete with all the necessary sensors. Along with HEXA, we deliver MIND, a robotics OS and SDK, where for the first time individuals don&#8217;t need to know underlying hardware and complex mechanics to learn and create interesting robotics functionality.&#8221;</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-113202" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/cat-vr-644x657.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="657" /></p>
<p>A new PVRR (Pet Virtual Reality Research) technical brief targets the hundreds of millions of global kitties who might enjoy a romp through a virtual playscape. For starters, be sure to watch the compelling promotional pitch below:</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/WwjYNdaGMu4?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Isobar, the brainchild of this operation, boasts their brain-monitoring and emotion-measuring capabilities. Thee <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ab214223917ee26ceea2262/t/5abcc0a470a6ad932344a436/1522319669849/PVRR_Whitepaper.pdf">brief reports</a> that they have partnered with Zoos Victoria to detail the stakeholders and potential benefits of their emerging tech. After all, they ask: why should only &#8220;big cats&#8221; get to have all of the fun?</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-113200" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/blueprint-644x338.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="338" /></p>
<p>Per the paper, &#8220;PVRR utilizes EEG and EKG technology to monitor cats’ emotions to certain stimuli. The methodology accounts for the fact that cats see less color, but see better in the dark than humans.&#8221; Their tests involved showing cats swimming fish, low-flying birds and other objects and scenes designed to evoke a response.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-113197" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/device-644x342.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="342" /></p>
<p>Actually reading the brief, though, you might be both amused and skeptical &#8212; it did also, after all, come out on April second, which may be more than coincidence (really, though, you should <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5ab214223917ee26ceea2262/t/5abcc0a470a6ad932344a436/1522319669849/PVRR_Whitepaper.pdf">read it yourself to learn more</a>).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-113201" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/cat-vision-644x389.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="389" /></p>
<p>More from the design team: &#8220;We pioneered a patent-pending process that is referred to as ‘W.A.H.T’- whisker attenuation and haptic telemetry. this groundbreaking addition to the computer vision and sensor platform has allowed us to leverage software algorithms to understand the ‘tells’ each feline has related to their whiskers and be able to accurately understand when a cat experiences one of the following states: (1) TD: totally disinterested, (2) D: disinterested, (3) MD: mildly disinterested and (4) CNP: cat-nipped – a term we’ve been using to express the same brain activity seen in highly stimulated cats when under the effects of catnip&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-113199" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/straps-644x439.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="439" /></p>
<p>Of course, this may all sound silly to us right now, but wait a few years and household pets may well while away lonely days at home being fed by robots and goofing off inside simulated playscapes. According to the PVRR brief: dogs are the next target audience, so: stay tuned, canine fans!</p>

<p>When we think of ancient persons carefully laying the foundations of stone monuments, or hard at work writing out historical tomes, it&#8217;s a bit hard to imagine them brushing away an interrupting cat or dog in frustration, much as we still do today.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111584" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/dog-prints-644x306.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="306" /></p>
<p>But PhD researcher <a href="https://twitter.com/PaulMMCooper/status/964834644670799872">Paul Cooper</a> became fascinated with these everyday moments, frozen in time, as he began to find more and more examples &#8212; like 4,000-year-old mud bricks, for instance, &#8220;stamped with the name and titles of the Sumerian king Ur-Nammu (reigned 2047-2030 BCE) and left out to dry.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111585" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/cat-pages-644x503.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="503" /></p>
<p>And while dogs may be less prone to hop on on tables, Cooper has found plenty of examples of cats knocking over ink and bounding across work surfaces to leave their mark, or even outright peeing on pages. The scribe of one ancient volume wrote in his text: “Here is nothing missing, but a cat urinated on this during a certain night. Cursed be the pesty cat that urinated over this book &#8230; because of it many others did too. And beware not to leave open books at night where cats can come.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111583" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/misc-prints-644x544.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="544" /></p>
<p>Left outside to dry, masonry materials often show signs of accidental intervention. One can find paw prints on clay tablets from the Ziggurat of Ur (21st century BCE), for example, and ancient Roman tiles (from around 0 CE) found in England, left by various species wild or domestic, including dogs, goats and sheep.</p>

<p>The 62-piece collection was designed by Inma Bermudéz and aims to fill a market gap with quality, aesthetically pleasing but affordable pet products.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107828" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ikea-scratching-post-644x667.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="667" /></p>
<p>Some of the objects extend existing uses, helping customers save money and space, like kitty-scratching materials that attach to existing IKEA table legs or puppy beds that slot into bookshelf systems already on offer.  A number of the products are designed to pack flat and fold away when not in use.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107833" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ikea-dog-bed-644x664.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="664" /></p>
<p>The designs reflect extensive research into pet needs and behaviors, including a bed designed to be stuffed with old clothes, blankets and towles to help dogs feel comfortable and familiar around their human family.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107830" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ikea-doggy-puppy-bed-644x664.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="664" /></p>
<p>Aside from pet sleepers and carriers, the LURVIG line features an array of brushes, bowls, leashes, bag dispensers spanning eating, playing, sleeping, traveling, walking.and other cat and dog activities.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107831" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ikea-lookout-644x664.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="664" /></p>

<p>Perhaps the biggest surprise in this stellar new collection is that no one at IKEA thought to do this sooner &#8212; thankfully, now they have.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82180" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-daycare-facility-468x300.jpg" alt="ark daycare facility" width="468" height="300" /></p>
<p>Swimming pools, private suites, flat-screen televisions, medical facilities and luxury lounges &#8211; all these amenities cannot be yours, but can be enjoyed by your pets (or pigs or horses) at the new AFK airport terminal just for animals.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82181" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-pet-car-468x281.jpg" alt="ark pet car" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p>Opening next year alongside JFK international airport, over 70,000 animals of all kinds are expected to pass through ARK annually. This 50,000,000-dollar, 178,000-square-foot space will be the<em> &#8220;world&#8217;s only privately owned animal terminal and USDA-approved, full-service, 24-hour, airport quarantine facility for import and export of horses, pets, birds and livestock.&#8221; </em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82184" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-livestock-horse-travel-468x351.jpg" alt="ark livestock horse travel" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Your best (canine) friend can enjoy more comforts than you can imagine, including pawdicures, massage therapy and even a swimming pool shaped like a dog bone, while you close feline companion climbs through dedicated jungle gyms or cat TV. Horses will enjoy food, water and rest while basking in daylit stalls that can be individually climate-controlled. You can also watch (and envy) your critters, large or small, via remote webcams on demand.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82183" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-horse-stalls-individual-468x263.jpg" alt="ark horse stalls individual" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>All animals have access to a veterinary hospital equipped for general health, emergency care, advanced diagnostics and with surgery suites, providing healthcare but also helping to streamline checks and certifications required for overseas travel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82179" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-horse-transport-468x351.jpg" alt="ark horse transport" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>The ARK will replace VetPort, a small 10,000-square-foot onsite facility (effectively a glorified kennel) with meager amenities that still requires a separate offsite quarantine system located miles away.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82185" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-animal-airport-terminal-468x351.jpg" alt="ark animal airport terminal" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>If this sounds like a luxury affair from a front-of-house perspective, consider all of the work architecture firm <a href="http://www.gensler.com/">Gensler</a> has put in to make the place function, like cleaning up 5,000 pounds of waste produced by up to 180 head of cattle per day. Clever architectural solutions are needed to deal with the sheer volume of animals passing through as well as their species-specific needs.</p>
