Raubdruckerin (AKA Pirate Printer) press apparel to painted manhole covers, utility grates, etched signage, vents and other objects that have depth differences (and thus themselves to the relief-printing process, like woodcuts or letterpress).

The group rolls out different colors of ink, much as one would with any kind of etched or raised printing process, then lays cloth down and applies pressure. Depending on the size and type of the object in question, the prints are partial or complete pictures of a given urban artifact.

The crew has traveled to Amsterdam, Lisbon, Paris and other iconic cities to capture some of their least-noticed but still-beautiful urban artifacts, transferring overlooked parts of these places to a new style of streetwear. Naturally, each one is a little different – even when the same street fixture is used, the re-inking process results in variegation from one print to he next (via Colossal).

Few works of architecture can boast half so strange a history as this structure now serving as a restaurant in the waters of Amsterdam.

Built in the Republic of Ireland, the platform known as REM Island was hauled off the coast of the Netherlands to become an artificial island broadcasting from what were initially international waters, complete with helipad.

The Dutch government, none too pleased with the incursion of Radio and TV Noordzee from its coastal hideout, passed a law to grab jurisdiction, then promptly sent armed forces to take over the station. It became a governmental laboratory for water testing and research, before ultimately being taken apart in the mid 2000s.

Today, it has been constructed (with functional retrofits) in the water once more, but close enough to shore to be reached by foot bridge. It currently serves as a stunning multi-story office and restaurant complex with an amazing rooftop viewing platform (images by Ewout Huibers, Jim Ellam via ArchDaily).

Theme parks are fun because of the rides, yes, but a lot of the joy comes from the atmosphere. Theme parks are designed like movie sets, and it feels like one has stepped into a different world. Wouldn’t it be great if that feeling could be brought home? It can be. Creating a themed home theater is increasingly popular with those that have the money, or the obsession, to make it worthwhile.

Pirate Themed Home Theater

Elite Home Theater Seating is one of the strongest voices in the themed home theater business. This particular offering is a pirate themed project that showcases their skills to great affect. These theaters are incredibly detail oriented, with a star studded sky completing the illusion of being on an open air ship on the high seas.

Egyptian Tomb Theater

Florida-based AVS Forum contributor Venomnusss shared his incredibly detailed Egyptian tomb-themed home theater. According to his description, the theater took 1.5 years to complete, which isn’t surprising considering the incredible detail. Symmetric sides encase a large U-shaped couch that can seat the entire family, whether it’s time for the next episode of a TV show, or a thrilling film.

Star Trek Movie Theater

Electronics masters ESC designed and implemented this intense Star Trek themed theater for a private homeowner. With an incredible amount of detail (apparent to any fans of the show) and a difficult set up, ESC pulled out all the stops, including motorized doors and concert-type lighting.
