<p>This 23-foot scale model of the moon is making its way around the world, allowing viewers to get close and see the many facets of this amazing celestial object. Each centimeter on the replica represents 5 kilometers on the lunar surface.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116539" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/nt-moon-644x910.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="910" /></p>
<p>Created by artist Luke Jerram, the Museum of the Moon is stopping in China, Finland, Australia and other countries to stop in exhibit spaces and outdoor venues.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116538" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/moon-on-water-644x377.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="377" /></p>
<p>The model was based on a 70-foot-wide image taken by NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera satellites and compiled by NASA&#8217;s Astrogeology Science Center.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116537" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/moon-below-644x433.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="433" /></p>
<p>While the moon is remarkable to see in the sky, without technical assistance (like a telescope) it is hard to make out the details &#8212; this model aims to change that.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116536" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/moon-kids-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>&#8220;As it travels from place to place, it will gather new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies, as well as highlighting the latest moon science.&#8221; (Images by Carl Milner, Gareth Jones, Leeds Living, Neil James, via <a href="https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2018/09/museum-of-the-moon/">Colossal)</a></p>

<p>The Air Opus Camper packs down into a surprisingly tiny trailer box easily towed behind a vehicle, but deploys automatically in less than two minutes (then folds back up in just 30 seconds).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112172" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/pulling-up-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112180" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/interior-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Using what the company calls &#8220;Air Pole Technology,&#8221; the pre-inflation process is pretty straightforward: the top panels are flipped outward and a quick-release lever pulled.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112173" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/sleeping-space-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112170" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/tricked-out-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Once it is open, a few bed supports need to be snapped into place for sleeping, but the structure is otherwise self-contained and essentially ready for use immediately.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112171" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/cooking-insideee-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112177" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/cooking-inside-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>By folding both upward and outward, the design makes maximum use of a small initial footprint, roughly doubling usable area within once it is set up.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112179" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/setup-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112178" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/trailer-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Furniture, meanwhile, is a combination of of inflated and folding, again to minimize spatial requirements, helping make the whole setup more compact for travel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112174" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/pull-out-kicthen-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/VEQ62KEwyLE?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>The camper retails for a bit over $20,000, so not cheap, but it offers a lot of space illuminated by built-in windows and skylights, plus a pull-out kitchen and grill for outdoor cooking (which also helps free up interior space for living and sleeping).</p>

<p>A dish-washing machine is often the first thing to go when space needs saving in a tiny home, small condo or studio apartment, but this little invention aims to provide a better option for more average-sized households.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110872" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/tabletop-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Developed by Heatworks, Tetra is a tankless washer aimed at one-to-two-person homes that can help save 1,500 gallons of water annually (as compared to hand-washing dishes). It&#8217;s about the same dimensions as a microwave and requires no plumbing hookup, making it nice and portable &#8212; it can be set on counters, stored in cabinets or tucked under islands. Water is poured in by hand and a single cycle takes just a few minutes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110874" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/hand-poured-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Detergent demands are also reduced and the process of adding them simplified, with a built-in tank that stores fluid for a few dozen rounds at a time. And as much for fun as anything: the gadget is see-through, so you can watch the cleaning process.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110873" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/tetra-types-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>The device is small, but made to hold up to 10 plates and glasses (or: about two place settings, compared to the 12 or so of a normal-sized washer for bigger houses). It also has various internal bases that can be swapped out depending on the needs of a different user (or particular wash cycle). It costs around $300.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/_4UgIijI0Z0?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>From the founder: “Our research indicates that although the average household is comprised of 2.58 people, the modern dishwasher holds place settings for 13 or more. This makes people believe that they either need to hand-wash their few dirty dishes — which wastes 10 times more water than using a dishwasher — or wait for a fill load to run a cycle. With Tetra, we hope to change people’s mindset.”</p>

<p>Work, school, rapidly changing cities and declining home ownership rates have us moving more often than ever, so the kinds of heavy antique furniture favored by older generations aren&#8217;t exactly practical in the modern world. In fact, we might become even more mobile in the future, our sense of &#8216;home&#8217; tied more to a handful of physical objects and intangible feelings within ourselves and our loved ones than to a particular structure. For this nomadic future, designers envision minimalist, portable furniture systems that can be packed up at a moment&#8217;s notice, but retain the ability to make us feel comfortable, cozy and cocooned.</p>
<h4>Hannabi Urban Nomad Sofa</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110360" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/hannabi-modular-couch-1-644x402.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="402" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110359" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/hannabi-modular-couch-2-644x393.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="393" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110358" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/hannabi-modular-couch-3-644x396.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="396" /></p>
<p>Sofas are often among the biggest, bulkiest things we have to lug up and down stairs and cram through small doorways when we move, and they don’t usually disassemble in a way that we’d want to deal with at our destination. Enter the Urban Nomad Sofa by Hungarian furniture brand <a href="http://www.hannabisofa.hu/">Hannabi</a>, a modular setup consisting of stacked cushions that can be used together or separately in various configurations. Two long rectangular cushions create the base of an average-sized sofa when used together, or comfy mats when used apart. Triangular supports can be used as pillows or backrests.</p>
<h4>Transformer Furniture 2.0 by Povilas Danius</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110331" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Transformer-furniture-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110330" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/transformer-furniture-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110329" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/transformer-furniture-3-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Designs like this<a href="https://www.behance.net/gallery/3000781/TRANSFORMER-FURNITURE-20"> bedroom in a box by Povilas Danius </a>make us wonder why IKEA isn’t already selling similar offerings. The Transformer Furniture 2.0 set packs down to the size of a bookcase but contains a twin bed, shelves, lighting, underbid storage and a closet system with a built-in shoe organizer. Packing it up takes seconds thanks to a few hinges.</p>
<h4>Nomadic Life Set by Gerardo Osio</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110349" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/nomadic-life-644x444.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="444" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110348" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/nomadic-life-2-644x470.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="470" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110347" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/nomadic-life-3-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The concept of taking the feeling of home with you wherever you go manifests in beautifully simple physical objects with <a href="http://www.gerardoosio.com/#/nomadic-life/">Nomadic Life by Gerardo Oslo</a>, a collection of comforts that can make all the difference when you’re in an unfamiliar environment. It includes a pillow, tatami mat and a wooden box with a lid that doubles as a tray containing copper tableware, a candleholder and a flower vase.</p>
<h4>Sweet Seat by Dear Human</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-110346" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/sweet-seat.jpeg" alt="" width="644" height="" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110345" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/sweet-seat-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-110344" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/sweet-seat-3.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="444" /></p>
<p>Sweet Seat is a modular furniture system by <a href="http://www.dearhuman.ca/">Dear Human </a>that can be a squishy chair or an extra bed for houseguests, all in a simplified minimalist package. The upholstered cushions are held together by elastic bands when stacked, and you simply remove them when you want to stretch out.</p>

<p>Borrowing stylistic details from urban warehouse lofts and rustic rural cabins, this 200-square-foot home manages to look weathered and sophisticated at the same time.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102819" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/bedroom-detail-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Reclaimed pine and cedar, a gabled roof and various recycled materials make the exterior of this abode look well-worn but welcoming.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102816" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kitchen-view-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Inside, the so-called <a href="https://tinyhouselistings.com/listing/denver-co-12-earth-and-sky-palace-luxurious-single-level-tiny-house/">Earth and Sky Palace</a> feels surprisingly spacious, complete with a queen bed at one end, bathroom at the other and combination living and dining area in between (as well as small loft above).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102815" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/bathroom-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>While metal, glass and wood detailing help the place feel more upscale (while somehow still minimal), small touches like a large bathroom mirror also help the interior feel larger.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102814" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/from-bedroom-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Expensive fixtures and finishes help give an impression of something like a mountain resort lodge, dark but rich in detail right down to the fancy shower heads and butcher-block counter tops.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102817" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/trailer-design-644x805.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="805" /></p>
<p>And it isn&#8217;t just about the looks: LED track lighting hooked up to dimmers gives users fine-grained control over the atmosphere, as does an app-controlled air conditioning and surround-sound system. Not bad for $74,000.</p>
