<p>Featuring three suites toward its peak (and a spa pool to top it off), this boutique hotel is situated in one of the tallest and oldest maritime cranes in the world &#8211; and despite the steel frame weighing a whopping 250 tons, it still slowly rotates with the weather.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75810" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/a-Jacuzzi-Top-deck-468x158.jpg" alt="a Jacuzzi Top deck" width="468" height="158" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75801" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/a-dutch-hotel-vup-468x624.jpg" alt="a dutch hotel vup" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>After three years of rehabilitation, code approval and other obstacles (include the search for a 500-pound bomb left from a previous World War), this remarkable transformation is complete and rooms are now open for rent at the <a href="http://www.faralda.com/">Faralda Crane Hotel</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75799" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/a-dutch-historical-use-468x584.jpg" alt="a dutch historical use" width="468" height="584" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75794" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/a-dutch-crane-lift-468x312.jpg" alt="a dutch crane lift" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/cc7PelghVyo?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>The lower part of the structure also features a conference, television and festival room that can be tied to renting out the rest of the spaces or used independently. If that isn&#8217;t exciting enough for you and your friends, guests can also bungee jump from the top of the crane as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75805" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/a-dutch-restoration-project-468x311.jpg" alt="a dutch restoration project" width="468" height="311" /></p>

<p>The rotational effects (top able to move independently of the bottom) are not to be underestimated, demanding a great deal of engineering ingenuity:<em> &#8220;Because the Faralda Crane hotel keeps spinning in the wind it is fit with a rotating shaft and a pivot bearing with gold. In the drag link are the gold connectors to guarantee the Internet connection to the Amsterdam Fire Department. The genius and always turning piping system has been specially designed for this Crane.&#8221;</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48266" alt="white house remodel project" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/white-house-remodel-project.jpg" width="468" height="328" /></p>
<p>Imagine the state of it: the United States executive mansion after 150 years of continuous occupation. By this time, the already-aging White House had been retrofit with a maze of modern amenities like plumbing, electricity and heating &#8211; none of which this expansive estate was constructed to house.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="white house historic interior" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/white-house-historic-interior.jpg" width="468" height="628" /></p>
<p>Per reporter <a href="http://www.nationaljournal.com/reporters/bio/174">Brian Resnick</a>, sagging ceilings, scaffolding and supports had rendered the structure an unsanitary fire hazard by the late 1940s &#8211; some suggested scrapping it entirely and starting from scratch, but President Truman lobbied to keep and rehabilitate it.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="white house reconstruction photos" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/white-house-reconstruction-photos.jpg" width="468" height="522" /></p>
<p>As these amazing photographs from the <strong>National Archives &amp; Truman Library</strong> illustrate, the entire interior had to be ripped out. Historically valuable materials and decor were meticulously cataloged and stored, and temporary steel columns and beams erected to keep the exterior from collapsing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="white house oval office" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/white-house-oval-office.jpg" width="468" height="622" /></p>
<p>To get equipment like bulldozers inside and clear debris required disassembling machines to avoid bursting holes in the sides of the structure &#8211; rebuilding would have been cheaper and faster, but this careful treatment preserved irreplaceable pieces of US history.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="white house grand remodel" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/white-house-grand-remodel.jpg" width="468" height="733" /></p>
<p>In all rooms and on all levels, lathe, plaster, brick and mortar were laid bare, giving a unique one-time view &#8211; fortunately captured in photographs &#8211; into the hidden structure and secret architecture of the most important residence in America.</p>

<p>In what may be the world&#8217;s strangest residential renovation, an artist-in-residence took this long-deserted and severely-dilapidated house, and restored it into what may be the world&#8217;s largest handmade dollhouse.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-41875" title="dollhouse life sized refab" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/dollhouse-life-sized-refab.jpg" width="468" height="800" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="dollhouse final refab photo" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/dollhouse-final-refab-photo.jpg" width="468" height="297" /></p>
<p>Canadian artist <a href="http://www.heatherbenning.ca">Heather Benning</a> found this home while staying in Redvers, Saskatchewan, with hints of color that only a creative mind could see as inspiration for a full-scale remodel into a brightly-colored playhouse.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="dollhouse reconstruction exterior interior" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/dollhouse-reconstruction-exterior-interior.jpg" width="468" height="778" /></p>
<p>But lest you think she got off easy, simply installing some old furniture and painting the place: the roof needed to be re-shingled, rooms needed to be re-plastered and sections of the structure required shoring up even though the purpose was display and not occupation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="dollhouse rehabilitation human scale" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/dollhouse-rehabilitation-human-scale.jpg" width="468" height="690" /></p>
<p>One whole side, of course, also had to be removed to complete the effect, so that (like a scale dollhouse) people can see all aspects of the inside from the outside. The result somehow manages to be both charming and slightly creepy at the same time. Benning, meanwhile, continues to work with site-specific landscape-and-architecture pieces.</p>
