The Eagle 360, a new tire design concept from Goodyear, is a rounded sphere held in place by magnetic fields and designed for a smoother ride in your future driver-free car.

The biggest advantage, of course, is omnidirectional steering capabilities, since the wheels have no orientation, unlike their forward-or-backward circular predecessors.

An organically-patterned, 3D-printed tread is designed to adapt like a sponge to different road conditions, while built-in sensor relay surface measurements to the onboard computer. Faster response times and immediate reaction capabilities in multiple directions all work toward improving passenger safety and comfort.

“By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tires will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road,” said Goodyear’s senior vice president Joseph Zekoski.

“Goodyear’s concept tires play a dual role in that future both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and test beds for next-generation technologies.”

The key to becoming a respected artist is not necessarily to do something entirely new and different, but to do it in a compelling way. Belgian artist Wim Delvoye is certainly not the first artist to ever carve old tires into new works of art, but he does it so masterfully that his pieces are unforgettable.

Wim Delvoye has got to be a very patient man to do what he does. The tires he works with are regular, thick, tough vehicle (and sometimes tractor) tires, yet the intricate designs he gives them would suggest he is working with a much softer material.

The lines are precise and perfectly placed, each leaf and petal and vine divinely shaped, and the symmetry wonderfully formed. Delvoye carves every tire by hand with no machines involved.

Each tire looks a bit like a fancy decoration, sort of like lace made of rubber. The delicate beauty of the carvings seems oddly at home with the rough industrial material into which they are carved.

Tires are boring. Except for the occasional horror experienced when one bursts or hits a nail, they’re simply an additional expense for your car. Most shoes have rubber soles, but only the most ecologically minded shoe companies intentionally reuse tire rubber for the bottom of their products. In some countries recycling is a necessity, and tires are salvaged for DIY shoe soles.

At some point in the last couple decades, tire rubber became chic. Tires are now a sought after material that can be used in clothing accessories ranging from necklaces and earrings to bracelets and belts. The durable material looks tough but is quite moldable and durable.

Tires are an integral structural ingredient in Earth Ships, the incredibly low impact and environmentally friendly houses that are becoming increasingly popular. Tires are formed into walls and then filled with dirt and sealed in with a stucco-like material. They provide great insulation while reclaiming huge amounts of used rubber.

Tire rubber is durable enough to form usable furniture, and can be surprisingly beautiful. Despite the interesting aesthetic, I can’t imagine these chairs are very comfortable for sitting. They definitely seem to serve a better function as a conversation starter.

Some furniture sets are made entirely out of tires and inflated tire tubing, creating extremely odd and interesting pieces. Whether the furniture keeps the tire’s original shape, or strips it of all but its most basic materials, tires are always eye-catching.

Some artists are able to turn the dullest materials into objects of real beauty. These decorations manage to take an incredibly dull object and turn it into something both lively and exciting. With a bit of coloring, the tire tread design becomes a pattern to be admired, rather than a feature to be taken for granted.

Tire sculptures are awesome. The shape and durability of used tires make them an ideal material for playground creations and stand-alone sculptures. Creative tearing and shaping can turn a pile of junk that would otherwise be burned into foul smelling clouds, into a hilarious Buddha, saber-toothed cat, or mythical warrior.
