<p>The Denver International Airport has long been a hub of conspiracy theories, a number of which seem to be confirmed by signs put up by the DIA on walls blocking off areas under renovation.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116304" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/lizard-people-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116307" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/ient-secrets-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Some theories hold that the DIA is the home base of the Illuminati, New World Order or Reptoids, citing everything from the layout of the airport and its runways to various bizarre murals, sculptures and engravings (argued to be secret codes or alien messages).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116305" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/gargoyle-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116303" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/tunnels-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>There have also been questions about extensive excavations of areas that seem to serve no obvious purpose, not to mention an array of really disturbing artworks (from militaristic paintings to giant glowing-eyed horse).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116306" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/ufo-sightings-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116301" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/trealined-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116302" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/new-concessions-644x362.png" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Tapping into this legacy, new marketing billboards reference lizard people, alien overlords, UFO sightings and other occult and extraterrestrial phenomena &#8212; maybe (OK: absolutely) this means the conspiracies are a fun joke, but of course, some will think they&#8217;re just hiding in plane sight.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102201" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/circular-takeoff-644x362.jpg" alt="circular takeoff" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Designed to reduce real estate needs for runways in ever-more-crowded cities, this &#8220;<a href="http://www.endlessrunway-project.eu/">endless runway</a>&#8221; system encircles a central terminal building and lets multiple planes take off and land at the same time.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/_tp0jaKaz7c?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Developed by Dutch scientist Henk Hesselink, the two-mile-circumference shape also lets planes land or take off in alignment with the wind (rather than fighting crosswinds) since they can line up with any point on the strip.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102202" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/round-runway-solution-644x336.jpg" alt="round runway solution" width="644" height="336" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.endlessrunway-project.eu/documents/index.php">In theory</a>, the system would improve the flying experience for both passengers and pilots, making for smoother departures and arrivals. They would also save energy and space, increasingly an issue for once-suburban (or rural) airports now encroached upon by growing cities.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102203" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/circular-runway-644x233.jpg" alt="circular runway" width="644" height="233" /></p>
<p>Critics have expressed skepticism regarding the difficulty of landings and take-offs in such a setup, but big backers seem to believe in the potential. Also, even if not immediately feasible, increased automation could make it increasingly viable over time, since computer systems can coordinate ideal landing and arrival trajectories for optimal safety and comfort and across multiple planes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102199" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/runway-system-644x413.jpg" alt="runway system" width="644" height="413" /></p>
<p>Each such setup provides the length of three airstrips and could be deployed or at least tested at scale in Europe soon &#8212; participating backers include the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR), along with DLR Germany and ONERA in France.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102200" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/round-runway-backers-644x383.jpg" alt="round runway backers" width="644" height="383" /></p>
<p>From the designers research report: &#8220;The results of the literature survey in this document are promising and suggest that a circular runway can be developed with current and expected technology. Today’s aircraft characteristics allow to take off and land with speeds and low altitude bank angles compatible with the operation on a circular track. The Endless Runway fits in future concepts that specify improved planning of operations, new navigation equipment, and intermodal transport.&#8221;</p>

<p>This architect-designed drone airport will be the first of its kind, created to facilitate an unmanned aerial vehicle supply chain servicing remote areas of Africa, addressing urgent medical and other ongoing needs. Just as much of the continent skipped landlines and went straight to mobile phones, this strategy could jump steps in the development of infrastructure for delivering for physical goods.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84286" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-airport-vaulted-brick-468x334.jpg" alt="drone airport vaulted brick" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Developed by Afrotech in collaboration with <a href="https://weburbanist.com/?s=foster+partners">Foster + Partners</a>, work is set to begin next year with a pilot program completed by 2020. The vaulted brick structure will have spaces for drone building and repair as well as packaging, shipping and storage of goods both medical and otherwise. The architecture is intentionally open, simple and able to be constructed with local materials and labor.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84284" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-airport-side-view-468x334.jpg" alt="drone airport side view" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Two systems will function simultaneously to provide emergency and ongoing supplies, respectively. The Redline will include small situation-specific drones that can serve targeted emergency needs, carrying over 20 pounds. Larger 200-pound-capacity Blueline drones will manage more sizable shipments of less urgent supplies.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84288" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-airport-rwanda-468x334.jpg" alt="drone airport rwanda" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The Droneport offers a new typology for a building which we hope will grow into a ubiquitous presence, much like petrol stations have become dispersed infrastructure for road traffic,&#8221;</em> acting as a network of stopping, refueling and repair stations.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84282" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-alternative-shipping-routes-468x334.jpg" alt="drone alternative shipping routes" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Currently, only a small percentage of the African population lives within a mile of year-round accessible roads, while UAVs from the Droneport will be able to more quickly, easily, safely and reliably access nearly half of Rwanda&#8217;s citizens.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84285" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-airport-commerce-468x334.jpg" alt="drone airport commerce" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;We require immediate bold, radical solutions to address this issue. The Droneport project is about doing ‘more with less’, capitalising on the recent advancements in drone technology – something that is usually associated with war and hostilities – to make an immediate life-saving impact in Africa.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84283" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/drone-airport-hillside-468x334.jpg" alt="drone airport hillside" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;It is inevitable on a crowded planet, with limited resources, that we will make more intensive use of our sky using flying robots to move goods faster, cheaper, and more accurately than ever before. But it is not inevitable that these craft or their landing sites will be engineered to be tough and cheap enough to serve poorer communities who can make most use of them. Droneport is an attempt to make that happen, and to improve health and economic outcomes in Africa – and beyond.&#8221;</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82180" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-daycare-facility-468x300.jpg" alt="ark daycare facility" width="468" height="300" /></p>
<p>Swimming pools, private suites, flat-screen televisions, medical facilities and luxury lounges &#8211; all these amenities cannot be yours, but can be enjoyed by your pets (or pigs or horses) at the new AFK airport terminal just for animals.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82181" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-pet-car-468x281.jpg" alt="ark pet car" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p>Opening next year alongside JFK international airport, over 70,000 animals of all kinds are expected to pass through ARK annually. This 50,000,000-dollar, 178,000-square-foot space will be the<em> &#8220;world&#8217;s only privately owned animal terminal and USDA-approved, full-service, 24-hour, airport quarantine facility for import and export of horses, pets, birds and livestock.&#8221; </em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82184" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-livestock-horse-travel-468x351.jpg" alt="ark livestock horse travel" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Your best (canine) friend can enjoy more comforts than you can imagine, including pawdicures, massage therapy and even a swimming pool shaped like a dog bone, while you close feline companion climbs through dedicated jungle gyms or cat TV. Horses will enjoy food, water and rest while basking in daylit stalls that can be individually climate-controlled. You can also watch (and envy) your critters, large or small, via remote webcams on demand.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82183" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-horse-stalls-individual-468x263.jpg" alt="ark horse stalls individual" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>All animals have access to a veterinary hospital equipped for general health, emergency care, advanced diagnostics and with surgery suites, providing healthcare but also helping to streamline checks and certifications required for overseas travel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82179" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-horse-transport-468x351.jpg" alt="ark horse transport" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>The ARK will replace VetPort, a small 10,000-square-foot onsite facility (effectively a glorified kennel) with meager amenities that still requires a separate offsite quarantine system located miles away.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82185" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ark-animal-airport-terminal-468x351.jpg" alt="ark animal airport terminal" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>If this sounds like a luxury affair from a front-of-house perspective, consider all of the work architecture firm <a href="http://www.gensler.com/">Gensler</a> has put in to make the place function, like cleaning up 5,000 pounds of waste produced by up to 180 head of cattle per day. Clever architectural solutions are needed to deal with the sheer volume of animals passing through as well as their species-specific needs.</p>

<p>Combining a novel form of wayfinding with a nod to the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, this new airport terminal trades moving walkways for a color-coded circuit of racetrack paths (or runways, if you will).</p>

<p>The airport extension to Narita International anticipates the additional capacity needed in a few years for the upcoming event but also reflects a limited budget for expansion, together driving a design that needs no illuminated signs and skips people-moving devices.</p>

<p>Blue leads to departures and red takes people to arrivals &#8211; a simple scheme but easily visible when set against the more monotone surrounding interiors. The collaborative project featured contributions by <a href="http://prty.jp/" target="_blank">PARTY</a> with consultants from <a href="http://www.nikken.co.jp/en/" target="_blank">Nikken</a> (photography by <a href="http://o-f-p.jp/" target="_blank">Kenta Hasegawa</a>).</p>

<p>Of course, we all know the experience of being late for takeoff &#8211; beyond its aesthetics, it could indeed prove quite useful to have fast and slow lanes during busy times and for those whose commutes demand they make their plane in time.</p>
