<p>IKEA furniture can get your interior design most of the way to where you want it, but another Scandinavian company has enlisted three world-renowned architecture firms to help get you the rest of the way to a high-end design.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116329" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/reform-ikea-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><a href="https://www.reformcph.com">Reform</a> enlisted architects from Bjarke Ingels Group, Henning Larsen Architects, and Norm Architects to create a series of finishing touches for existing IKEA products, from customized handles to stylized surfaces. Tapping into the popularity of Nordic design as well as the thriving industry of <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/05/12/space-hacking-modular-joints-connect-ikea-everything-else/">IKEA hackers</a>, Reform aims to make luxury design affordable.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116325" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/modernizing-ikea-644x404.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="404" /></p>
<p>The company specializes in kitchens, seeing them as oft-overlooked spaces of opportunity for design improvements, but they also are working on mods for living rooms, bathrooms and wardrobes. Here are the three core designs, with notes on inspiration and materials from their designers:</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116326" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ikea-details-644x386.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="386" /></p>
<p>&#8220;The kitchen is simple, but exclusive in its timeless design. Carrying no handles, it presents a table top covering the entire surface and adding to it an exquisite finish – like the best design furniture. The materials, which have seldom been used in kitchens, give away a clean but raw expression. They come in three different variants: Fiber-concrete, bronzed tombac, and sawn and smoked oak.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116324" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/custom-ikea-644x586.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="586" /></p>
<p>&#8220;For a thoroughly personalised kitchen you can stand on the shoulders of Norm Architects and add your own mix of materials creating a the visual expression of your liking. All the natural materials have been selected for their durability and reaction to wear. That is, the kitchen does not grow ugly. On the contrary it will patinate beautifully, which the bronzed tombac is a fine example of. Slowly it will shine golden in those areas of continuous wear.&#8221;</p>

<p>Turn your home into a gallery with functional furnishings that double as sculpture, like cabinets in the form of human torsos and beds shaped like roller coasters. These 18 designs blur the lines between furniture and art, blending gallery-worthy aesthetics with practical purposes.</p>
<h4>Enignum Chairs, Tables and Beds by Joseph Walsh</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80058" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-enignum-1-468x281.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture enignum 1" width="468" height="281" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80061" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-enignum-4-468x264.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture enignum 4" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80053" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furnithre-walsh-468x312.jpg" alt="sculptural furnithre walsh" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Artist <a href="http://www.josephwalshstudio.com/2011/index.php/current-work/enignum-v-chair">Joseph Walsh</a> strips wood into thin layers to create incredibly delicate-looking sculptural forms that also function as an array of practical objects. “Using free form design allows the material to dictate the composition,” reads Walsh’s artist statement. “Tables, chairs, entire walls that don’t just straddle the universes of art, architecture and function but unify them into a beautiful equation.”</p>
<h4>La Montaña Rusa Roller Coaster Bed</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80081" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/scultpural-furniture-montana-rusa-1-468x289.jpg" alt="scultpural furniture montana rusa 1" width="468" height="289" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80073" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-montana-rusa-2-468x312.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture montana rusa 2" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The shape of this communal bed and lounging area by artist duo ‘<a href="http://www.skny.com/exhibitions/2008-03-21_los-carpinteros/pressrelease/">Los Carpinteros</a>’ echoes that of a rollercoaster, the pink padded surfaces rising and falling in a reference to “the cycles of life, rest, dreaming, sexuality, birth and death.”</p>
<h4>Human Figure Cabinets by Peter Rolfe</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80078" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-peter-rolfe-3-468x468.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture peter rolfe 3" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80077" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-peter-rolfe-2-468x468.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture peter rolfe 2" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-80076" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/sculptural-furniture-peter-rolfe-1-468x366.jpg" alt="sculptural furniture peter rolfe 1" width="468" height="366" /></p>
<p>The nude human form becomes more than just a visual to admire in the hands of woodworker <a href="http://www.p-rolfe.co.uk">Peter Rolfe</a>, who has created a series of figurative sculptures that are also cabinets. Drawers pull out of some unexpected places, the seams sometimes hidden so you have to paw around a bit to find them.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75429" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/glitch-furniture-art-design-468x487.jpg" alt="glitch furniture art design" width="468" height="487" /></p>
<p>No, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with your screen &#8211; this intricate wooden cabinet was actually carved to resemble an image error. The <a href="http://mocovote.com/good-vibrations-storage-unit-by-ferruccio-laviani/">&#8216;Good Vibrations&#8217; storage uni</a>t by designer <a href="http://www.laviani.com/">Ferruccio Laviani</a> combines traditional Oriental craftsmanship and design with the visual effects of a digital or analog glitch.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47676" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-1.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 1" width="468" height="397" /></p>
<p>Designed for the 2013 Furniture Exhibition in collaboration with Italian furniture company Fratelli Boffi, the wooden cabinet features two distorted areas where conventional carvings seem to have been stretched.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47675" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-3.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 3" width="468" height="374" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, the only image of the cabinet made available to the public shows it from the front, so we can&#8217;t get a look at how the distortions appear from three-quarter and side angles.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47672" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-5.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 5" width="468" height="332" /></p>
<p>Glitch art plays on the psychological effects that come with looking at these images, whether they were created accidentally or intentionally, inviting us to take a deeper look at technological mistakes. Also referred to as &#8216;databending&#8217;, glitch art can be strangely compelling.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46134" alt="unusual furniture" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/unusual-furniture.jpg" width="468" height="457" /></p>
<p>The form factors of familiar furniture tend to be rather concrete in our minds. When we think of a chair, we expect it to look like a chair &#8211; and likewise for tables, benches, and so forth. But by playing with materials, functionality and appearances, furniture designer <a href="http://www.thomasschnur.com/index_en.htm">Thomas Schnur</a> makes us totally re-think our preconceived ideas about furniture.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46132" alt="rubber table" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/rubber-table.jpg" width="468" height="296" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46133" alt="rubber plunger table" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/rubber-plunger-table.jpg" width="468" height="266" /></p>
<p>End tables and plungers are two household items which are so common they are often overlooked. The Rubber Table combines the two into a completely new and kind of bizarre piece of furniture. It&#8217;s a flexible rubber tabletop supported by five small plungers which, when pushed in gently, cause the table to adhere to whatever surface it is on through suction.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46136" alt="high shelf" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/high-shelf.jpg" width="468" height="236" /></p>
<p>The beer bench is a symbol of fun times in Germany and everywhere else in the world with beer tents and summer festivals. Schnur&#8217;s High Shelf uses the same type of folding legs to bring a simple open metal cabinet up to a usable height. The resulting pieces allow the festival mindset to persist year-round in a home.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46137" alt="benchchair" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/benchchair.jpg" width="468" height="240" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46138" alt="thomas schnur benchchair" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/thomas-schnur-benchchair.jpg" width="468" height="250" /></p>
<p>The monobloc chair is said to be the world&#8217;s most popular chair. The simple stackable plastic lawn chair can be seen in back yards around the world. Schnur took the monobloc aesthetic and extended it into a surprisingly stylish fiberglass bench. As a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Benchchair&#8217;s design inspiration, one side of the bench looks just like the classic monobloc chair.</p>
