<p>Not a drop of glue or any other adhesive holds together the delicate, 2-inch-thick limestone tiles that make up this airy canopy, which billows into the vaulted ceilings of the Arsenale di Venezia at the <a href="http://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/exhibition/">15th annual Venice Architecture Biennale.</a> Conceived by <a href="http://www.block.arch.ethz.ch">Block Research Group</a> and presented by <a href="https://www.ethz.ch/en.html">ETH Zurich</a>, the ‘Armadillo Vault’ is a temporary custom-built installation showing off the surprising versatility of an unyielding material that’s been an architectural mainstay for millennia. Compression keeps all 399 individually-cut, unreinforced stones in place as they stretch across the cavernous space.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92874" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stone-canopy-2-644x460.jpg" alt="stone canopy 2" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92873" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stone-canopy-3-644x460.jpg" alt="stone canopy 3" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>The centerpiece of an installation entitled ‘Beyond Bending &#8211; Learning from the past to design a better future,’ the Armadillo Vault aims to show the world that digital design and fabrication methods can go hand in hand with humble, ancient building materials like earth and stone. Other components on display include four innovative vaulted floor systems and a series of graphical force diagrams showing how the stones fit together.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92872" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stone-canopy-4-644x460.jpg" alt="stone canopy 4" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92871" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stone-canopy-5-644x460.jpg" alt="stone canopy 5" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>Spanning over 52 feet through the Arsenale, the canopy was initially manufactured and assembled in Texas before being disassembled and shipped to Venice, with master stonemasons tasked with setting it into place on-site over a period of two weeks. The precision of the puzzle-like assembly to hold up all that weight with very few supports is a result of mathematically analyzing the structure to control compressive forces.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92870" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stone-canopy-6-644x460.jpg" alt="stone canopy 6" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/167868985' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Check out how the structure was designed and installed in this video from Block Research Group, including computer models that show off the tessellation and Voussoir Geometry used to design the tile assembly.</p>

<p>Designed by <a href="http://www.elevatestructure.com/">Elevate Structure Inc.</a> in Hawaii (photos by <a href="http://www.corylumphoto.com/">Corey Lum</a> for <a href="http://www.civilbeat.com/2015/08/living-hawaii-elevating-discussion-about-tiny-homes-and-housing-crisis/">Civil Beat</a>), the 40-square-foot-base expands upward to a 400-square-foot second floor above, overhanging to provide shade for outdoor uses (patios or parking) underneath.</p>

<p>Eco-friendly features include living and breathing exterior walls that can also be used to grow edible produce, self-sufficient solar power generation via side and top panels and rainwater storage and collection (up to 1,500 gallons).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84497" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tree-house-shape-468x249.jpg" alt="tree house shape" width="468" height="249" /></p>
<p>The modular structure was originally designed as an easy-to-ship, simple-to-build and off-the-grid solution for remote parts of Oahu, but the target has since been expanded due to broader public interest.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84495" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tree-house-living-walls-468x418.jpg" alt="tree house living walls" width="468" height="418" /></p>
<p>While they work wonderfully as elevated homes, the units can also be used for other purposes, including small stores, cafes, offices, gyms and/or storage spaces.</p>

<p>From its creators:<em> &#8220;Inspired by Hawaii&#8217;s natural beauty, Elevate founders Tiffany and Nathan set out to create these innovative structures to help care for the environment and help people. The pressure of existing global issues &#8211; insufficient water availability in areas, poor air and water quality in others, and high energy consumption are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments &#8211; combined with their streak of entrepreneurship brought the Elevate unit to life.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Inflatables are good for more than just pool toys and camping beds &#8211; they also come in the form of giant tentacles springing from open windows, the world&#8217;s largest rubber duck and (literally) gigantic piles of crap. <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/09/09/blow-up-buildings-17-inflatable-works-of-mobile-architecture/">Blow-up buildings</a> can have a practical purpose as mobile architecture, but sometimes, oversized inflatables are just for fun, transforming both interior and exterior environments and bringing shock value to art festivals around the world.</p>
<h4>Giant Poo, Pig &amp; Stonehenge<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82325" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-poo-468x312.jpg" alt="inflatable poo" width="468" height="312" /></h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82326" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-poo-pig-468x312.jpg" alt="inflatable poo pig" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82331" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-stonehenge-468x312.jpg" alt="inflatable stonehenge" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>A group of artists came together in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong to install<a href="http://www.designboom.com/art/giant-inflatable-pile-of-poo-roast-pig-and-stonehenge-sculptures-at-m-hong-kong/"> oversized inflatable works,</a> including ‘Complex Pile’ by Paul McCarthy, ‘House of Treasures’ by Cao Fei and ‘Sacrilege’ by Jeremy Deller, for an art festival.</p>
<h4>Plastic Bubble Environments Transform Interiors</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82309" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-balloon-environemnts-2-468x439.jpg" alt="inflatable balloon environemnts 2" width="468" height="439" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82310" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-balloon-environments-1-468x375.jpg" alt="inflatable balloon environments 1" width="468" height="375" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82311" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-balloon-environments-3-468x339.jpg" alt="inflatable balloon environments 3" width="468" height="339" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82312" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-balloon-environments-4-468x448.jpg" alt="inflatable balloon environments 4" width="468" height="448" /></p>
<p>All that’s left of an interior space once these inflatable plastic environments by <a href="http://peniqueproductions.com">Penique Productions</a> are put into place is the basic shape and structure of it, all details obscured to create a surreal new environment. The Barcelona-based group inflates massive colorful balloons inside buildings to transform them for special events.</p>
<h4>Tentacles, Eyeballs &amp; More by Filthy Luker</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82322" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-filthy-luker-3-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable filthy luker 3" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82321" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-filthy-luker-2-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable filthy luker 2" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>French street artist <a href="http://www.filthyluker.org">Filthy Luker</a> makes it seem as if gigantic octopi are trying to escape from buildings around the world, and anthropomorphizes trees with inflatable eyeballs.</p>
<h4>Inflatable Snow Chalet in Miami Beach</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82335" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-log-cabin-468x312.jpg" alt="inflatable log cabin" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82336" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inflatable-log-cabin-2-468x312.jpg" alt="inflatable log cabin 2" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The unlikely sight of a snow-topped ski chalet bobs up and down in the bay beside the now-abandoned Miami Marine Stadium for Art Basel 2013. Entitled ‘Curiosity,’ the giant inflatable structure by Paris-based <a href="https://www.perrotin.com">Galerie Perrotin</a> and French artist duo Kolkoz plays on contrasts. “‘Curiosity’ was the name that was given to the last Mars exploration rover. We have taken this idea of an invader exploring a foreign land and applied it to the snow covered chalet that has set off on a journey and arrived in the middle of a maritime stadium in the hot Florida sun.”</p>

<p>There is nothing like a good mystery to draw people in, but adapting that maxim in an architectural context flies in the face of convention, making this barely-open-box building all the more effective in how it employs the element of surprise.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78086" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-exterior-facade-night-468x351.jpg" alt="unboxing exterior facade night" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78081" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-front-facade-468x585.jpg" alt="unboxing front facade" width="468" height="585" /></p>
<p>While closing people off to what is for sale may seem antithetical to showcasing wares. At the same time, that is precisely the paradox Herzog &amp; De Meuron&#8217;s latest storefront for a fashionable chain of Japanese boutiques uses to its advantage.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78084" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-facade-interior-468x585.jpg" alt="unboxing facade interior" width="468" height="585" /></p>
<p>This new shop for Miu Miu, intended to be its flagship operation, works on both fronts, playing on our desire to unbox from outside while creating an intimate interior space within.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78082" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-main-entry-468x585.jpg" alt="unboxing main entry" width="468" height="585" /></p>
<p>While the outside is polished and minimalist, like the case of some fresh new smartphone, the inside is set up as much like a living room as a store, encouraging people to browse, linger, sit and lounge among the various items for sale. Mannequins are set up as participants and exemplars, themselves sitting on the seats or floors, or leaning against racks in the store.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78085" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-sitting-spaces-468x351.jpg" alt="unboxing sitting spaces" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The typological model that best suited these considerations and specifications was a box placed directly at the level of the street, its cover slightly open to mark the entrance and allow pedestrians to look inside,&#8221;</em> explain the architects. <em>&#8220;Only then do they realize that the building is a shop. Here, under the oversized canopy, the two-storey interior is visible at a single glance, as if the volume had been sliced open with a big knife, turning the inside out.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78087" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-store-interior-chairs-468x334.jpg" alt="unboxing store interior chairs" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78083" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unboxing-living-room-468x351.jpg" alt="unboxing living room" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The rounded, soft edges of the copper surfaces inside meet with the razor-sharp steel corners on the outside of the metal box, while the cave-like niches clad in brocade face the central space of the shop like loges in a theater. The shop on two tall storeys not only presents enticing goods on tables and in display cases; it is also like a spacious and comfortable home with inviting sofas and armchairs.&#8221;</em></p>
