Your sweaty neighborhood gym has nothing on these beautifully designed fitness facilities full of multi-story climbing walls, skybridge pools, dramatic boxing rings, nightclub-style lighting and cool typographic murals. It looks like the architects and designers had as much fun dreaming up these beautiful modern fitness centers as clients get to have using them. Do yoga in a glass box overlooking Manhattan, lift heavy in a former communist monument, test your arm strength in the world’s largest bouldering gym or kickbox in a room that looks like a sci-fi movie set.

Wellness Sky in Belgrade, Serbia by 4of7

‘Wellness Sky’ is a pretty good name for a glassy triangular building cantilevered over a river and pedestrian esplanade in Belgrade. The building began as a communist monument known as the ‘Danube Flower,’ but lay abandoned throughout the 1990s during the Yugoslav wars. Today, its exterior looks much the same, but the interiors by firm 4of7 are transformed, with the backlit, faceted semi-translucent Barrisol stretched ceiling brightening up a fitness facility.

Brooklyn Boulders Coworking Space in Somerville, Massachusetts

Doesn’t this look like fun? Graffiti from local artists encourages you to find your strength at the Brooklyn Boulders facility in Somerville, Massachusetts – which is actually an unusual take on the co-working environment, seeking a balance between work and play. The facility hosts the usual work tables, but they’re a pretty minor feature compared to the 40,000-square-foot rock climbing wall that reaches all the way to the ceiling.

American Copper Gym in NYC by ShOp

What’s inside the skybridge connecting America’s tallest copper towers? A double-height fitness center with enviable views of New York City. This skybridge at SHoP’s residential towers, known as the American Copper Buildings, contains a 75-foot lap pool overlooking the East River, a climbing wall and a fitness center as well as a hot tub, bar and lounge.

Sabhan, Kuwait gets its first commercial boxing gym in the form of ‘The Burrow’ by Lab 100, a beautifully designed facility full of semi-private workout halls, a huge boxing room and an elevated crossfire area. “While designing the space, the key factor was in emphasizing a natural flow of movement and the element of surprise,” say the architects. “In order to reach the workout area, members have to take a narrow corridor, passing by the locker area and into the main workout hall. In contrast to the corridor, the spacious workout area embraces an elevated boxing ring in its center. The boxing ring is dramatically lit with nine pendant lights to highlight its importance in the facility.”

Rock Gym in Polur, Iran by New Wave Architecture

The striking exterior of this facility in Iran sort of looks like a rock cracked open to reveal a geode inside, a fitting aesthetic choice for a huge climbing gym with boulder-like interior walls. New Wave Architecture found inspiration in the large-scale movements and tectonic forces of the earth’s crust for the design, which also enables climbing up the exterior.

If you had your own pirate ship fort, multi-story slide, climbing wall or indoor skate park, would you ever want to leave your house? Some homeowners have turned their residences into private playgrounds and theme parks, incorporating fun elements to liven up home life for kids and adults alike.

Home Library with a Wooden Slide

Bookshelves and a slide are built into a set of stairs in the Panorama House by architect Moon Hoon from South Korea, encouraging kids to spend a lot more time in this fun little space. And as if those three functions weren’t enough, the steps also offer a stadium-style home theater seating area. Says Hoon, “The multi-use stair and slide space brings much active energy to the house, not only children, but also grown ups love the slide staircase. An action filled playful house for all ages.”

Indoor Skate Park House

An abandoned hunting lodge in the woods of Salzburg, Austria was remodeled into a skater’s dream, filled with ramps and curving surfaces to make it an indoor skate park and residence in one. Designed by professional skateboarder Philipp Schuster, Skate Villa retains its lodge character with antlers, rifles and rustic furniture.

Colorful Home with Spiral Stairs, Slides and Trap Doors

Trap doors, slides, bridges and bright three-story spiral staircases make this ‘magical oasis’ by AB Rogers and DA Studio much more enjoyable for kids and adults alike than an average home.
A floating pirate ship bedroom with a rope bridge, offering a magical place to sleep, is just the beginning in this fun-centric house by Kuhl Design. A hidden slide spirals three stories down to a basement with a climbing wall and video golf room.

Stairs wrap around one side and the slide wraps around another. Another fun feature is a small light-filled ball pit.

Climbing walls are playgrounds for adults; they’re a place where one can clamber up and over obstacles in a socially acceptable manner, and still chalk it up as exercise. There are plenty of unique climbing walls out there, however, that are crazy enough to make the whole experience a lot more wild, and fun.

It is fun to imagine being able to scale the walls of your house like Spiderman, but in practice it’s a bit more difficult (and frowned upon). The Japanese design firm Nendo created an awesomely fun looking wall that seems out of a storybook. Sturdy frames and standard rock grips give an otherwise normal looking wall a much more interesting angle.

The treadwall is perfect for a climber who wants to improve their speed, or simply doesn’t have the room to install a full fledged climbing wall. Much like the treadmill in a gym, it allows someone to climb for as long as they’d like, and without worry of falling down.

The excalibur tower in the Netherlands is the world’s tallest climbing tower. The scope of this structure is jaw-dropping. At 121 feet tall, climbing this beast is not for the faint of heart. The width of the tower gives plenty of variation, as well, so every climb feels like the first.

As fun as diving boards are, there’s something to be said for climbing walls inside a pool. These walls serve as the perfect platform for jumping into the pool, and all without any fear of a painful fall.

For climbers in training, Mobius playground equpment give kids a safe way to clamber around large obstacles to their heart’s content. Any parent would be glad to see their child use up some of their energy in an activity full of healthy exercise.

It makes sense to incorporate activities like climbing into an urban landscape, as it’s an environment uniquely suited for this kind of activity. Tall buildings and a lack of close climbing opportunities in the middle of a city are the perfect combination. An urban climbing wall can be added to many structures, especially if one is not overly concerned with the odd aesthetic.

Inflatable climbing walls would be perfect for a birthday party or work event. One thins is for sure: it’s a lot easier for people to have fun and cut loose with a climbing wall than it is with an inflatable castle.

This unique tower was created to help showcase an excavator. The marketing clearly works, as it’s hard not to be impressed. Check out this video for a better look (fun starts at 2:55, and check out the ending as well):

Climbing walls don’t always have to be a boring edifice stuck in the middle of nowhere, or contained inside a gym. Here are a few examples of some beautiful walls that have been incorporated in interesting ways. Who wouldn’t like climbing a gigantic pair of jeans?

Urban explorers are given a chance to scale a city wall in a unique installation at Universal Studios Florida. For a little cash, one can scramble up the side of a faux building that looks like it was torn out of a real city.
