<p>Somewhere between half-hearted DIY jobs and expensive custom-created solutions, there’s customizable furniture kits, which make it easy to create the ideal setup for your home and life without requiring special skills or tools.</p>
<h4>Hacka IKEA kitchen</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82766" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-ikea-hacka-468x343.jpg" alt="customizable ikea hacka" width="468" height="343" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82767" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-ikea-hacka-2-468x343.jpg" alt="customizable ikea hacka 2" width="468" height="343" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/125785046' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>People hack IKEA products all the time, creating new items from cheap components available at the Swedish big-box store. The <a href="http://www.designboom.com/design/ikea-hacka-kitchen-concept-milan-design-week-04-26-2015/">‘Hacka’ concept</a> is a kit that makes it even easier to do using a series of orange joints and wooden beams. You essentially create your own framework around IKEA products like countertops, sinks and storage cabinets for a completely customizable setup that’s easy to change around at your whim.</p>
<h4>The Homework Desk</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82765" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-homework-desk-2-468x600.jpg" alt="customizable homework desk 2" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>Start with two simple trestle legs and add whatever surfaces work best for you, whether that’s a flat desktop, a self-healing cutting mat, storage for writing implements or some combination of the three. With <a href="http://dornob.com/homework-desk-can-be-customized-to-workspace-needs/">The Homework Desk</a>, you can incline your surfaces like a drafting table, hang felt slings for additional storage or connect various compartments including pen holders, vertical filing systems and even a hidden phone charger. The whole front ledge of the desk functions as a ruler, too.</p>
<h4>Push-Pull Foam Chair</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82775" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-push-pull-foam-468x351.jpg" alt="customizable push pull foam" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82776" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-push-pull-foam-2-468x351.jpg" alt="customizable push pull foam 2" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Do you like chairs that are deep and low to the ground, or prefer a higher perch? Do you like armrests, or would you rather have that space free for a better range of movement? The <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/kshikerdesign/the-root-1/sink-in">Sink In chair</a> consists of foam bars enclosed within a wooden frame so it’s incredibly easy to create a seat that’s tailored to your exact desires.</p>
<h4>Dots Storage System</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82761" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-dots-2-468x311.jpg" alt="customizable dots 2" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82760" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/customizable-dots-468x311.jpg" alt="customizable dots" width="468" height="311" /><br />
Protruding cylinders attached to wall panels in a grid pattern support a series of boxes for storing and displaying various objects in the ‘DOTS’ system by <a href="http://www.polarislife.it">PolarisLife.</a> Move them around, add more shelves, arrange them however you like them. When the cylinders aren’t supporting a shelf, they can be used to hang things like coats, bags and plants.</p>

<p>Why spend a fortune on a virtually endless array of aesthetically questionable kids&#8217; furniture, from birth to their teen years, when you could choose customizable, transforming, modern furniture elements instead? These 13 smart space-saving solutions are just as well-thought-out as furniture made for adults, and can keep up with kids&#8217; growth.</p>
<h4>Rubik&#8217;s Cube Modular Kids Furniture</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70834" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Rubiks-Cube-1.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Rubiks Cube 1" width="400" height="400" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70833" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Rubiks-Cube-2.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Rubiks Cube 2" width="400" height="286" /></h4>
<p><a href="http://www.bemlegaus.com/2010/07/modulo-magico.html">The Magic Module</a> is a bunch of colorful foam and fabric cushions that can be clipped together to resemble a giant Rubik&#8217;s cube, or disassembled into seats, lounges, footrests and beds.</p>
<h4>Smart Kid Bedroom in a Box</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70854" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Smart-Kid-1-468x348.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Smart Kid 1" width="468" height="348" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70853" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Smart-Kids-2-468x348.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Smart Kids 2" width="468" height="348" /></h4>
<p>This<a href="http://www.adensen.com/"> kids bedroom-in-a-box</a> starts out as a solid birch and plywood crib and then reconfigures into a variety of items that can be used throughout childhood. Take it apart once your toddler is too big for it and re-assemble it into a playpen, junior bed, desk or chalkboard and book rack.</p>
<h4>Dumbo Double-Tuck Bed</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70850" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Dumbo-Double-Tuck-Bed-1-468x337.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Dumbo Double Tuck Bed 1" width="468" height="337" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70849" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Dumbo-Double-Tuck-Bed-2-468x350.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Dumbo Double Tuck Bed 2" width="468" height="350" /></h4>
<p><a href="http://www.casakids.com/shop/tuck-murphy-beds/">Tuck Beds by Casa Kids </a>are &#8216;modern murphy beds for kids,&#8217; with the ability to be mounted horizontal or vertically to practically any wall. It takes up just 13 3/4&#8243; of floor space when it&#8217;s all closed up, leaving lots of space for play. An integrated shelf doubles as leg support.</p>
<h4>Convertible Crib Turns into Toy Bin &amp; Bookshelf</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70848" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Convertible-Crib-1.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Convertible Crib 1" width="468" height="333" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70847" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-Convertible-Crib-2.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture Convertible Crib 2" width="468" height="312" /></h4>
<p>The <a href="http://www.yiahn.com/">Yiahn Bassinet</a> is another design that goes from birth to late childhood, starting out as a safe place for baby to sleep and transforming into a toy bin and bookshelf for toddlers, and then a chair and table for kids aged 4-8 years. If the family has a second baby, it can be reclaimed for its original use.</p>
<h4>SPOT All-in-One Wooden Furniture Series</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70846" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-SPOT-1.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture SPOT 1" width="468" height="385" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70845" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-SPOT-2.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture SPOT 2" width="468" height="312" /></h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-70844" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kids-Furniture-SPOT-3.jpg" alt="Kids Furniture SPOT 3" width="468" height="264" /></h4>
<p>Free of all the visual clutter typically associated with children&#8217;s bedroom sets, <a href="http://dornob.com/simple-all-in-one-wooden-furniture-series-grows-with-kids/#axzz3CCrOgzmJ">SPOT by Polish designer Wiktoria Lenart</a> is a space-saving furniture set with a neutral look and highly customizable character so kids can craft their rooms according to their own personalities and needs. Lofted beds, sliding compartments and a bed frame that doubles as a play space make it fun and easy for kids to create their own personal spaces.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-46540" alt="e ink custom keyboard" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/e-ink-custom-keyboard.jpg" width="468" height="350" /></p>
<p>Electronic ink is energy efficient and easy on the eyes, so why not adapt it to the keyboard? It is, after all, one of the few components of everyday technology that still has printed type in a screen-dominated world.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="e_inky" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/e_inky.gif" width="468" height="225" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="electronic ink keyboard concept" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/electronic-ink-keyboard-concept.jpg" width="468" height="272" /></p>
<p>Designed by <a href="http://www.behance.net/gallery/E-inkey-(concept)/6878883">Maxim Mezentsev &amp; Aleksander Suhih</a> the E-inkey keyboard for Pixel Studio (<a href="http://p1x.ru/" target="_blank">p1x.ru</a>), the concept is simple: e-ink key displays that can shift to gaming keys, shortcuts or program-specific icons smoothly on demand, just like turning the digital page in your favorite e-book reader.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="electronic oled color keyboard" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/electronic-oled-color-keyboard.jpg" width="468" height="513" /></p>
<p>There is already a working precursor to this, and it is more than a prototype &#8211; the Optimus Maximus keyboard has configuration software for full customization (letters, images, icons, colors), but uses power-sapping and heavy-touch OLED technology (making it harder to go wireless or even push buttons).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="eink customizable multitasking keyboard" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/eink-customizable-multitasking-keyboard.jpg" width="468" height="606" /></p>
<p>While this is not yet in production, the specs give some hope that it might make its way to Kickstarter or an equivalent soon &#8211; it definitely falls under the <em>&#8220;please take my money!&#8221;</em> category for tech geeks and design professionals alike.</p>
