<p><a href="http://www.wellsfireworks.co.uk/history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wells Fireworks</a> manufactured pyrotechnics at <a href="https://thenewenglishlandscape.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/joseph-wells-fireworks-factory/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dartford, Kent</a>, UK from 1837 through the late 1970s, finally financially sputtering out under price pressure from cheap competition based in China. We&#8217;ll bet old Joseph Wells did not see that coming.</p>

<p>Many of the firm&#8217;s original factory buildings still stand (though not too steadily) at the now-overgrown and peaceful Joyce Green area of Dartford. Credit Flickr user Darren Cullern (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22790512@N04/sets/72157644317242789" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">innerbeast</a>) with these images of the former Wells Fireworks factory taken on August 2nd, 2013.</p>
<h4>Colombian Explosition</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81217" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/abandoned-fireworks-factory-2d-468x263.jpg" alt="abandoned fireworks factory 2d" width="468" height="263" /></p>

<p>Fireworks factories make products that go BOOM&#8230; ideally, far from their place of origin. Premature explod-ulation is not cool &#8211; just the opposite! Kudos to Wells Fireworks for not blowing itself to smithereens even once during its 150-year-long history; incidents like the colorful explosion of a <a href="http://www.periodicocontrastes.com/news/incendio-en-granada-cundinamarca-habria-sido-provocado/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fireworks factory</a> near Bogota, Colombia in <a href="http://www.noticiascaracol.com/colombia/explosion-en-polvoreria-de-municipio-granada-cundinamarca" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">January of 2015</a> are all too common.</p>
<h4>Boom Boom Room</h4>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81230" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/abandoned-fireworks-factory-3b-468x351.jpg" alt="abandoned fireworks factory 3b" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>The office and administration building of an abandoned <a href="https://www.travelblog.org/Photos/6396307" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fireworks factory in Macau</a> looks like it&#8217;s been through a battle or two in its day. Most likely it was built to survive an explosive calamity, which if you come to think of it is rather like being in a war. Betcha the boss of the place passed on the corner office with a view &#8211; wouldn&#8217;t you?</p>

<p>This Flowerwork photo series from Berlin-based artist <a href="http://www.sarahillenberger.com/work/116/flowerwork">Sarah Illenberger</a> stemmed from her combined interest in art, photography and graphic design as well as a fascination with other dimensions of everyday options.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75020" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/flower-purple-green-explosion-468x457.jpg" alt="flower purple green explosion" width="468" height="457" /></p>

<p>Working together with photographer Sabrina Rynas, buds and blossoms were set against a faux night sky, appearing to be much larger fireworks shot from off-screen at first glance. In some cases the stems trail like streamers or one plant seems nested in another like some kind of grand finale.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75013" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/flower-burst-light-dark-468x457.jpg" alt="flower burst light dark" width="468" height="457" /></p>

<p>More about the artist: <em>&#8220;Sarah Illenberger is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Berlin working at the intersection of art, graphic design, and photography. With a focus on analog craftwork using everyday items, Sarah is renowned for creating vivid, witty images that open up new perspectives on seemingly familiar subjects.&#8221;</em></p>

<p><em>&#8220;Her ability to transform ordinary materials into complex and unexpected visual experiences has been utilized to develop concepts for clients from the fields of culture and business in several countries. In her aim to explore the fertile overlap between art and design, she’s collaborated with numerous photographers and artists, and filled exhibition spaces with self-initiated projects in Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin.&#8221;</em></p>

Fireworks sales are “fly by night” on several levels, and when <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/04/03/lets-enjoy-gas-japans-artistic-gas-storage-tanks/" target="_blank">boom</a> turns to bust the colors fade faster than the aftermath of a bombshell in a moon-washed sky.</p>
<p>Take the outstanding image above of an abandoned fireworks stand outside Savannah, Georgia. Flickr user <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikegarde/" target="_blank">Mike Garde</a> employs HDR to tease every last photon out of the corrugated sheet metal shack helpfully painted in explosive yellow and red by its builders. By the way, is <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikegarde/2516257365/" target="_blank">&#8220;Cheap Fireworks&#8221;</a> really the way to go when purchasing explosive materials intended to entertain one&#8217;s loved ones up close &amp; personal? Just wonderin&#8217;.</p>
<h4>Faded Glory</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70730" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/abandoned-fireworks-store-Emporia-VA-468x243.jpg" alt="KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA" width="468" height="243" /></p>
<p>Fireworks were invented by the ancient Chinese and Americans have used them to celebrate momentous occasions since, well, since before there even WAS an America. By the looks of it, this long-abandoned wholesale/retail fireworks emporium near, um, Emporia, VA opened its doors not long after John Hancock signed his, er, John Hancock. Kudos to long-time Flickr user <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lbealsphotography/3029967974/in/photostream/" target="_blank">Lawrence Beals</a> for capturing the ramshackle edifice in 2006 in all its gritty glory about three years before it was torn down.</p>
<h4>Red, White &amp; Blew</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70731" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/abandoned-fireworks-store-Piedmont-Alabama-1-468x351.jpg" alt="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70732" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/abandoned-fireworks-store-Piedmont-Alabama-2-468x351.jpg" alt="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70733" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/abandoned-fireworks-store-Piedmont-Alabama-3-468x351.jpg" alt="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Ever since the first shell slammed into Fort Sumter, America&#8217;s proud southerners have loved the sight, sound and smell of explosions. The length and breadth of the former Confederacy is crammed with shotgun shacks selling all manner of fireworks &#8211; some open, others not. The 5,000-odd residents of Piedmont, Alabama alone have at least a couple of fireworks stands and credit <a href="http://secondperiodindustries.blogspot.ca/2012/10/abandoned-fireworks-stores-of-piedmont.html" target="_blank">Second Period Industries</a> with capturing a couple of the more patriotically decorated ones for posterity.</p>
<h4>Abandoned Fireworks Warehouse Is Where?</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70746" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/abandoned-fireworks-warehouse-468x701.jpg" alt="abandoned fireworks warehouse" width="468" height="701" /></p>
<p>We won&#8217;t tell you where this beautifully desolate abandoned fireworks warehouse is because, well, if we (or <a href="http://www.brightbirddeals.com/2010/11/picture-wednesday.html" target="_blank">BrightBird</a>, where its image can be found) did, it likely wouldn&#8217;t look as striking as it does thanks to squatters, vandals and taggers. For this moment captured in time, at least, we all can enjoy the sight of Mother Nature&#8217;s own fireworks taking back what&#8217;s rightfully Hers.</p>
