<p>It may not slip into your pocket with quite the ease of a Leatherman, but this <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/jhil/">Millennium Falcon multi-tool </a>is a lot more fun to use when the hyperdrive breaks down and R2 isn’t around to fix it. Packed with four hex keys, two screwdrivers and a wrench, it features a magnetically sealed hatch and a built-in adjustment wheel built into the helm.</p>

<p>The handy implement is just one of dozens of <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/star-wars/">Star Wars gifts available at ThinkGeek </a>&#8211; which can still get to you in time for Christmas if you order by Wednesday the 21st.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-99588" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/star-wars-gifts-death-star-waffles-644x644.jpg" alt="star-wars-gifts-death-star-waffles" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>If you’re going to own a waffle iron, it might as well imprint something cool onto your breakfast, right? The dark side has waffles, and <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/huik/">they pop out in the shape of the Death </a>Star. If one side doesn’t come out perfect, just flip it over &#8211; “there’s a concave dish composite beam suppresser indentation on both cooking plates, so you’re covered.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-99586" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/heat-change-mug.gif" alt="heat-change-mug" width="644" height="644" /></p>

<p>If a luxurious Wampa rug is more your style, they’ve got those, too, along with Rogue One Deathtrooper fleece robes, hooded scarves just like Rey’s in The Force Awakens, Chewbacca foot stockings, Tauntaun sleeping bags (bound to be better-smelling than the real thing!) and Darth Vader silicone oven mitts. Practically anything Star Wars-related you can think of is here. <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/star-wars/">Check it all out at ThinkGeek.</a></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51758" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hell-is-Other-People-Smartphone-App-1.jpg" alt="Hell is Other People Smartphone App 1" width="468" height="423" /></p>
<p>Social media was invented to bring people closer, but the more antisocial among us can use it in a different way: to avoid the people we know. &#8216;<a href="http://hell.j38.net/">Hell is Other People</a>&#8216; is an interactive smartphone app coded by the same <a href="https://buzzoid.com/">team behind Buzzoid</a> that will show you exactly where your friends are based on Foursquare check-ins, and provide &#8216;safe zones&#8217; where you can hang out without fear of being recognized.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51757" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hell-is-Other-People-Smartphone-App-2.jpg" alt="Hell is Other People Smartphone App 2" width="468" height="336" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/65940846' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Using the GPS function on your phone and your contacts&#8217; public check-ins or location updates on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram and other social media, the app will show you yellow points on a map that indicate where your friends are. The green points represent &#8216;safe zones.&#8217;<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51756" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hell-is-Other-People-Smartphone-App-3.jpg" alt="Hell is Other People Smartphone App 3" width="468" height="292" /></p>
<p>Of course, the map only works if your friends are avid social media users, checking in to virtually every place they go, and you still run the risk of running into them when they&#8217;re in route. You also might be relegated to unexpected places in the city. But as creator Scott notes in the video, &#8220;It&#8217;s kind of nice that I&#8217;ve been pushed into parks.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the future, maybe we&#8217;ll all be pressing buttons on countertop machines that will squeeze various food pastes into the creative shapes of our choice. The 3D printing revolution isn&#8217;t limited to <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/05/01/high-tech-to-high-fashion-upscale-3d-printed-designs/">fashion</a>, pretty objects, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/05/12/fighting-the-future-3d-printed-gun-fired-blocked-by-us/">guns</a> or even <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/02/13/mobius-strip-plans-to-build-worlds-first-3d-printed-house/">architecture</a> &#8211; it&#8217;s edible, too. A combination of scans, special digital files and machines that extrude materials into complex forms might just make food more of an art form than ever before, if these 14 examples are a preview of what&#8217;s to come.</p>
<h4>Infinity Bacon</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51089" alt="3D Printed Food Infinity bacon" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Infinity-bacon.jpg" width="468" height="348" /></p>
<p>In a possibly Freudian typo, <a href="http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/1730-guid.html">Shapeways</a> describes this Bacon Mobius Strip as &#8220;not delicious but also vegan and kosher-friendly.&#8221; You can <a href="http://www.shapeways.com/model/735764/bacon-mobius-strip.html">order one of your very own</a> to keep forever as a bizarre conversation piece on the mantel, or recurring breakfast gag.</p>
<h4>3D Printed Sculptural Sugar</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51099" alt="3D Printed Food Sugar" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Sugar.jpg" width="468" height="511" /></p>
<p>Amazingly intricate sculptures of sugar are <a href="http://the-sugar-lab.com/gallery">3D printed by The Sugar Lab</a>, a husband-and-wife team of architectural designers. &#8220;With our background in architecture and our penchant for complex geometry, we&#8217;re bringing 3D printing technology to the genre of mega-cool cakes. 3D printing represents a paradigm shift for confections, transforming sugar into a dimensional, structural medium.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Pasta, Cereal and Burgers by Freedom of Creation</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51098" alt="3D Printed Food Pasta Cereal" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Pasta-Cereal.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>How will 3D printing technology be applied to the home of the future? Designer Janne Kytannen of <a href="http://wgsn-hbl.blogspot.ca/2013/04/3d-printed-food-models-by-freedom-of.html">Freedom of Creation</a> envisions our own little countertop printing machines capable of producing pasta, cereal, burgers and more. Kytannen believes that as the ability to design our own food becomes more accessible, the items we choose to eat will become far more creative and complex.</p>
<h4>Eat Your Own Chocolate Face</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51087" alt="3D Printed Food Chocolate Face" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Chocolate-Face.jpg" width="468" height="310" /></p>
<p>A 3D printing workshop in Tokyo produced <a href="http://www.bitrebels.com/technology/3d-printed-chocolate-version-face/">miniature chocolate versions of the creators&#8217; faces</a>. Each person went into a small room to get a full body scan, and a 3D printed mold was made of their heads. Now, they can make chocolates and other confections in the shape of their own faces again and again. Tokyo&#8217;s <a href="http://www.fabcafe.com/blog/2013/02/13/cubechoco/">FabCafe </a>sells the molds for $65 each.</p>
<h4>Escher Cookies Made with 3D Printed Rollers</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51097" alt="3D Printed Food Escher Cookies" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Escher-Cookies.jpg" width="467" height="535" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/u85ckBpY3j0?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>A slab of ordinary cookie dough was made into Escher-inspired cookies using a 3D-printed roller. <a href="http://www.georgehart.com/rollers/">George W. Hart</a> converts patterns into 3D-printed rollers using a MakerBot; you can download the software and files to make your own at his website.</p>
<h4>High-Resolution 3D Printed Chocolates</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51096" alt="3D Printed Food Chocolates" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Chocolates.jpg" width="467" height="570" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/33775105' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Deemed the world&#8217;s highest-resolution 3D-printed chocolates, these <a href="http://www.movingbrands.com/work/advent/">sugary confections from Moving Brands</a> started out as a fun project and turned into a learning process about the intricacies of 3D printing with various materials. &#8220;We had to think about the physical properties of molten plastic and the structural integrity of layers… We had to become conversant with how the machine was put together and even how it sounded and smelled,” explained the project technical lead, Daniel Soltis.</p>
<h4>Shoe Burger</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51095" alt="3D Food Shoe Burger" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Food-Shoe-Burger.jpg" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>A shoe isn&#8217;t typically the most delicious-looking object, but <a href="http://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/977-ready-to-eat-3d-printed-shoe-burger.html">Tristan Bethe</a> managed to make one look pretty good in both burger bun and chocolate form. Tristan 3D-scanned his own shoe, made a food-safe silicone mold and poured in the mix for both items.</p>
<h4>Ramen Noodles</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51085" alt="3D Printed Food Ramen Noodles" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/3D-Printed-Food-Ramen-Noodles.jpg" width="468" height="349" /></p>
<p>Cornell University&#8217;s <a href="http://www.fabathome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page">Fab@Home program</a> has provided designers with 3D printers equipped with syringes that squeeze out pastes of various kinds, including pasta dough. <a href="http://www.cookingissues.com/2011/01/24/fantastic-stochasic-masa-finally-a-good-3-d-food-printing-application/">Dave Arnold of Cooking Issues</a> used his to make noodles in cool shapes. &#8220;I find that whole idea, which removes ourselves even further from the way our food is made, horrifying. Dinner from a series of homogeneous pastes?&#8221; says Arnold; but ultimately, the noodles he created were so delicious he could barely capture them on camera before they disappeared.</p>

<p>You might think twice about approaching a neighbor to turn down their loud music if it were emanating from the <a href="http://www.niknowak.de/images/panzer.htm">SoundTank</a>, a mobile audio system by Berlin-based artist Nik Nowak. The imposing sound system was made using an old Japanese miniature tracked dumper as a base. Nowak added four tweeters, six 12-inch drivers, and three 8-inch subwoofers, in addition to other audio components, as well as a faceted exterior full of speakers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-50622" alt="SoundTank Mobile Sound System 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/SoundTank-Mobile-Sound-System-2.jpg" width="468" height="369" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/-jbmDcSBkoY?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>&#8216;Panzer&#8217;, which means tank in German, is capable of booming 4,000 watts of sound from its strategically designed array of speakers, and it has a hydraulic cover that flips up with the touch of a button. It&#8217;s also equipped with a drum machine, mixer and synthesizer.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-50621" alt="SoundTank Mobile Sound System 3" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/SoundTank-Mobile-Sound-System-3.jpg" width="468" height="369" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/PpF5bpSgrpE?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Nowak focused on electronic music during his art studies, and composes music that consists only of low-pitched tones. With the SoundTank, the artist was looking to create an extra-loud system for outdoor performances that can handle a particular frequency spectrum. Performances at festivals and other venues showed off the tank&#8217;s capabilities.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-49705" alt="Superhuman Senses Mask 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Superhuman-Senses-Mask-1.jpg" width="469" height="352" /></p>
<p>Put on a futuristic-looking, geometric white mask and you&#8217;ll suddenly have superhuman senses, hearing targeted sounds from long distances or applying effects to images in real-time. <a href="http://timbouckley.com/work/design/eidos.php">The &#8216;Eidos&#8217; masks</a> were developed by a group of students from the Royal College of Art in London, fitting over the mouth or ears to enhance sensory perception.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-49704" alt="Superhuman Senses Mask 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Superhuman-Senses-Mask-2.jpg" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/58771063" height="350" width="468" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>
<p>The mask that fits over the mouth and ears features a directional microphone to capture audio, which is processed by software to eliminate background noise. The sound is transmitted directly to the inner ear through bone vibrations to make it seem as if someone else&#8217;s speech is coming from inside your own head.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-49703" alt="Superhuman Senses Mask 3" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Superhuman-Senses-Mask-3.jpg" width="468" height="275" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-49702" alt="Superhuman Senses Mask 4" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Superhuman-Senses-Mask-4.jpg" width="468" height="279" /></p>
<p>The second mask, which fits over the eyes, adds visual effects to the wearer&#8217;s range of vision, and can also analyze visual data. That data is sent to a computer, where software processes it and picks out patterns and movements that are invisible to the naked eye.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-49701" alt="Superhuman Senses Mask 5" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Superhuman-Senses-Mask-5.jpg" width="468" height="438" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Eidos has broad application in areas where live audio and video analysis is valuable. For example, sportspeople can visualise and improve technique in real time. Eidos also has healthcare benefits where it can be used to boost or refine sensory signals weakened by ageing or disability. In the arts, Eidos can augment live performance such as ballet, fashion or music concerts. It allows us to highlight previously invisible or inaudible details, opening up new and customisable experiences.&#8221;</p>
