<p>The casting call is coming from inside the house, and these real-life horror <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2018/04/15/riffin-large-mst3k-graffiti-stickers-stencils/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">movie</a> houses achieved infamy as on-location sets for some memorable <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/05/08/oh-snap-15-abandoned-shuttered-fotomat-film-kiosks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">film</a> shoots.</p>
<h4>Amityville Horror House</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120797" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/horror-movie-houses-1b-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>The so-called <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078767/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amityville Horror</a> House can be found at 108 (formerly 112) Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY. Producers of the 1979 film sought permission to shoot on location at the actual house where Ronald DeFeo Jr shot and killed 6 members of his family in 1974, but were denied. Instead, a house in Toms River, NJ was altered to resemble the three-story Dutch Colonial home, right down to the distinctive “pumpkin eyes” attic windows. Ironically, the house on Ocean Avenue itself has been altered and no longer sports the quarter-round windows. <em>(images via <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/77681308@N05/30330152580/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">austinpomer</a> and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140435781@N04/27453549762/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Encouraging Quotes</a>)</em></p>
<h4>Poltergeist House</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120798" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/horror-movie-houses-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>This house at 4267 Roxbury St. in Simi Valley, CA is where the 1982 horror film <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084516/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Poltergeist</a> was filmed. Unlike the movie home, this house did NOT implode into some sort of supernatural black hole. The photo above was taken 35 years after filming completed and not a whole lot has changed other than the extensive brickwork in the front yard. One would hope the masonry wasn&#8217;t sourced from any abandoned cemeteries. <em>(image via <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/thetikiroom/523070924/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jack Stephens</a>)</em></p>
<h4>Silence of the Lambs House</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120799" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/horror-movie-houses-3-644x431.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="431" /></p>
<p>Also known as Buffalo Bill&#8217;s house, this rambling three-story Victorian home in the Village of Layton, Fayette County, PA featured prominently in the 1991 shock horror thriller <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102926/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Silence of the Lambs</a>. The home was put on the market by its owners in 2016 but, to quote <a href="https://archive.triblive.com/news/sale-of-silence-of-lambs-house-in-fayette-county-goes-torturously-slowly/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Trib Live</a>, the sale was going <em>“torturously slowly”</em>. Not for the obvious reason, mind you, but likely due to the 4-bedroom house only having one bathroom. Now THAT&#8217;s what we call horrible! <em>(image via <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/pdmjr99/26882142464/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Paul McCarthy</a>)</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-97629 size-full" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-seven-gables-2.jpg" alt="black-houses-seven-gables-2" width="1200" height="918" /></p>
<p>Most people can be divided into two pretty clear-cut categories: those who think black houses are creepy in a bad way, and those who love them for all their mysterious allure. Victorian houses in San Francisco, famously witchy mansions in Salem, modern homes in Japan and gingerbread houses in the woods of New York all get cool points when they&#8217;re painted top-to-bottom in shades of coal and pitch, though one abandoned black house in North Carolina looks legitimately scary in its dark disarray.</p>
<h4>Black Ocean Firehouse, New York</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97628" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-ocean-644x967.jpg" alt="black-houses-ocean" width="644" height="967" /></p>
<p>The black paint on this facade of a former New York City firehouse highlights all of the ornate neo-gothic architectural details, modernizing the 1890s structure for its new life as the <a href="http://architectureatlarge.com/works/black-ocean-firehouse/">headquarters for Black Ocean</a>, a digital media company.</p>
<h4>Haus in Schwarz, Germany</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-97648" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-schwarz-1.jpg" alt="black-houses-schwarz-1" width="640" height="899" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-97647" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-schwarz-2.jpg" alt="black-houses-schwarz-2" width="640" height="516" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.karin-abt-straubinger-stiftung.de/kas/cms/front_content.php?idart=103">This house in Germany</a> wasn’t painted pitch black all over until after it was condemned, as a sort of tribute before it was demolished, and that’s kind of a shame. It looks way cooler than its similarly-shaped neighbors on the same street. At night, it virtually disappears into the sky.</p>
<h4>Shingle House by NORD</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97657" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-shingle-1-644x332.jpg" alt="black-houses-shingle-1" width="644" height="332" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97656" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-shingle-2-644x475.jpg" alt="black-houses-shingle-2" width="644" height="475" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97655" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-shingle-3-644x429.jpg" alt="black-houses-shingle-3" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Located on the shingle beach of Dungeness, one of England’s most unique landscapes, this home by <a href="http://www.living-architecture.com/the-houses/shingle-house/photos/">NORD</a> stands out from a sea of fisherman’s huts with its pitch paint and tarred black roof. It’s available for rent as part of Living Architecture, a project offering vacations in striking works of modern architecture.</p>
<h4>Abandoned Black House in North Carolina</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97633" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-abandoned-1-644x428.jpg" alt="black-houses-abandoned-1" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97632" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-abandoned-2-644x483.jpg" alt="black-houses-abandoned-2" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97631" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-abandoned-3-644x428.jpg" alt="black-houses-abandoned-3" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p>Unlike the other houses on this list, which simply don harmless black exteriors, <a href="http://www.hcpress.com/news/the-creepy-black-house-with-the-red-dot-on-howards-knob-in-shambles-after-wild-parties-vandalism.html">this home</a> on a peak in mountainous Western North Carolina is truly creepy. Located on Howard’s Knob in Boone, the home known as “The Cult House” has been abandoned for many years since its owners were went to prison, and has deteriorated after being broken into, vandalized and used as a party house. Once a million dollar home, it’s now peeling and crumbling.</p>
<h4>Black-Fronted Residence for Park Place, London</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97660" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/black-houses-park-place-644x941.jpg" alt="black-houses-park-place" width="644" height="941" /></p>
<p>In London, <a href="http://shh.co.uk/residential/park-place">SHH Architects</a> won permission to convert a 1960s office into a home with a black facade. The original seven-story building was demolished and replaced with black brick, a double-story Oriel bay window with a decorative metalwork screen, and polished granite window frames.</p>

<p>Had Buffalo Bill escaped Clarice Starling and moved into a quaint suburban Connecticut home, his interior decor might have looked a little something like this. At <a href="http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/24-Brentwood-Dr-Avon-CT-06001/59011376_zpid/">24 Brentwood Drive</a>, an absolutely amazing color palette in shades of dried blood, glistening internal organs and Exorcist vomit green adorns every available surface in the form of hand-painted designs. And the best part is &#8211; all of this could be yours for just $339,900.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97480" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-1-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-1" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97479" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-2-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-2" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-97476" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-5.jpg" alt="horror-house-5" width="644" height="" /></p>
<p>Believe it or not, this is an actual real estate listing on Zillow.com, described by listing agent Ernie Rossi as a “unique one of a kind finishing completed by a professional!” The agents provide a full 51-photo tour on the site, showing off room after room filled with decoupaged stair rails, musty-looking floral curtains, decorative stamped paint in rust red and squiggly designs in shiny copper.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-97474" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-7.jpg" alt="horror-house-7" width="644" height="" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97473" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-8-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-8" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97472" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-9-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-9" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Naturally, the listing went viral on social media upon discovery, with people describing the interiors as “serial killer chic,” “deranged” and “a portal to hell.” The real estate agents told <a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/deranged-or-just-one-of-a-kind-house-with-bizarre-interior-decor-becomes-viral-star">The National Post </a>that the sellers are artists, and remain optimistic that someone out there will fall in love with their designs. The home has only had one interested party in thirty days online, however.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97471" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-10-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-10" width="644" height="483" /> \</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97470" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-11-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-11" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97469" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/horror-house-12-644x483.jpg" alt="horror-house-12" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Who knows &#8211; maybe it’s actually some kind of viral horror marketing for a horror movie or a Halloween attraction, given that it’s mid-October and the house is located near the ominously named Mount Horr and Secret Lake &#8211; but there are elements of the home that feel earnest. <a href="http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/24-Brentwood-Dr-Avon-CT-06001/59011376_zpid/">Check out the full listing</a> to decide for yourself.</p>

<p>This holiday season brings fresh printer-compatible designs of low-poly skeletons, monsters, animals and more for the do-it-yourself costumer, all scaled to fit an adult or resizable for children.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85111" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-skeleton-paper-cardboard-468x255.jpg" alt="diy skeleton paper cardboard" width="468" height="255" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85105" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-articulated-dragon-468x468.jpg" alt="diy articulated dragon" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85109" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-tiger-head-468x387.jpg" alt="diy tiger head" width="468" height="387" /></p>
<p>Like a polygon mesh in 3D computer graphics (that has a relatively small number of polygons), these masks are leant a haunting effect unique to the digital age, looking otherworldly and surreal like low-resolution computer renderings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85099" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-elephant-trunk-468x468.jpg" alt="diy elephant trunk" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85103" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-tailed-fish-468x311.jpg" alt="diy tailed fish" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Some models are more complex than others, involving sets of articulated parts that rotate on simple hinges or pivots, like the tail of a fish, trunk of an elephant or the hands of a dragon.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85107" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-maskmaking-process-468x311.jpg" alt="diy maskmaking process" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85101" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-bull-horns-468x311.jpg" alt="diy bull horns" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>The key ingredients: a printer, some paper of applicable color, glue sticks, craft knife, tape, cardboard and an elastic headband. If you have more time than money, or simply enjoy the process, these models provide a great balance of personal work and creativity within a ready-made outline.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85110" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-dog-face-468x311.jpg" alt="diy dog face" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85102" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-bunny-rabbit-468x467.jpg" alt="diy bunny rabbit" width="468" height="467" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85100" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-antler-antelope-468x704.jpg" alt="diy antler antelope" width="468" height="704" /></p>
<p>From their maker, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Wintercroft">Wintercroft on Etsy</a>, who sells the plans online:  &#8220;The instructions and templates are designed to be quick and easy to follow. The finished masks are pretty robust due the their polygon construction and will survive the wildest of parties.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85104" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-panda-bear-468x311.jpg" alt="diy panda bear" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85108" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-fox-people-468x281.jpg" alt="diy fox people" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85106" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/diy-owl-mask-468x385.jpg" alt="diy owl mask" width="468" height="385" /></p>
<p>More on Steven Wintercroft: &#8220;By nature I am obsessively creative and starting making things as a kid with my granddad. I studied Art and design, then furniture studies and have been designing and building custom surfboards since I was a teenager. I&#8217;ve worked as a cabinet maker but have spent most of my time as a full time surfboard shaper. I believe that the urge to create is a fundamental part of being human and these masks provide an excuse to sit down, get out the scissors, tape and paint and make something&#8221; (via <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/10/geometric-halloween-masks-by-wintercroft/">Colossal</a>).</p>
