<p>One of these, Peach Blossom Island (above), was created for the Wonder Festival in Shanghai. It was inspired by the fable of Peach Blossom Dragon Spring, a phantom-dreaming world equally surreal in legend as in the sculpture.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115327" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/architectural-interior-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>Many of the elements in these works transition with remarkable clarity from human to architectural forms, with windswept hair morphing into tree branches or vegetation-covered hillsides, or crumbling faces breaking into rocky facades. The effect brings the viewer inside the mind of the figure, making it easy to imagine they are lost in thought in the landscapes spilling out all around them.</p>

<p>Reportedly inspired by a divine message, the architect of this poultry-shaped church initially set out to create a place of worship in the form of a giant dove, but the locals quickly dubbed his creation the Chicken Church (Gereja Ayam in the regional language).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82265" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/chicken-church-exterior-ground-468x312.jpg" alt="chicken church exterior ground" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82264" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/chicken-church-side-view-468x351.jpg" alt="chicken church side view" width="468" height="351" /></p>

<p>Indeed, despite the best intentions to craft it otherwise, it is impossible not to see a domestic egg-laying bird when looking at this open-beaked architectural creature.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82263" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/chicken-church-interior-view-468x351.jpg" alt="chicken church interior view" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82260" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/chicken-church-structural-decay-468x351.jpg" alt="chicken church structural decay" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>In a remote Indonesian forest, this creation of Daniel Alamsjah was once a place of prayer as well as a rehabilitation center for children and drug addicts, but finishing the building proved too costly and the place closed down over a decade ago.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82262" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/chicken-church-head-neck-468x624.jpg" alt="chicken church head neck" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/54749924' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Covered in graffiti and crumbling at a structural level, the Chicken Church is likely not long for this world. For now, though, travelers (sometimes with romantic partners) can be found inside at times, cooped up away from prying eyes, but eventually the building will doubtless be either demolished or perhaps simply collapse on its own (story via <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/07/indonesian-chicken-church/">Colossal</a> and images via <a href="https://uzone.id/wow-ada-bangunan-gereja-berbentuk-burung-tersembunyi-di-yogya/" target="_blank">uzone.id</a>, <a href="http://setumbu.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Punthuk Setumbu</a> and <a href="http://alekvsleak.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Alek Kurniawan</a>).</p>

<p>A bizarre art installation based on a dream saw a 50-ft tall <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/10/08/real-life-up-balloon-transports-entire-buildings/" target="_blank">balloon</a> become a bizarre “Man In The Moon” as it rose above the streets of Utsunomiya, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/08/11/royal-blush-japans-abandoned-queen-chateau-soapland/" target="_blank">Japan</a>.</p>
<p><span id="more-75165"></span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75167" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_1-468x702.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_1" width="468" height="702" /></p>

<p>Residents of Utsunomiya, a smallish city roughly 60 miles (100 km) north of Tokyo, Japan, experienced the shock of their lives on the evening of December 13th, 2014 when they espied the full moon rising over the horizon.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75189" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_19-468x351.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_19" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75190" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_20-468x351.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_20" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75191" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_21-468x624.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_21" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>No doubt dozens of necks suddenly snapped in a group double-take as residents suddenly realized <strong><em>that&#8217;s no moon&#8230;</em></strong> it&#8217;s the enormous <a href="http://starwalker.jugem.jp/?eid=719" target="_blank">inflated head</a> of one of their neighbors!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75170" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_3-468x381.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_3" width="468" height="381" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75171" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_4-468x292.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_4" width="468" height="292" /></p>
<p>Give credit to Japanese art trio Me (in collaboration with the Utsunomiya Museum of Art) for the uniquely unusual “<a href="http://www.oji-sora.jp/" target="_blank">Ojisora</a>” project, an artistic effort spanning over two years from conception to realization. Its origin rests with one of the three artists, Haruka Kojin (above, right), who as a junior high school student dreamed of an old man&#8217;s grossly enlarged and disembodied head floating over town and country .</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75172" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_6-468x312.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_6" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75173" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_5-468x702.jpg" alt="ojisora_human_head_balloon_Japan_5" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Upon awakening from her dream, Kojin quickly sketched her recollection and then just as quickly forgot about it. Many years later, she came across her sketch and wondered&#8230; was there some way to <a href="http://www.asahi.com/articles/photo/AS20141216002365.html" target="_blank">recreate her dream</a> in real life? After consulting with her two co-artists and with the support of the Utsunomiya Museum of Art, Kojin took the first step towards <a href="http://colocal.jp/news/40787.html" target="_blank">realizing</a> – and sharing on a mass scale – her odd dream from so many years before.</p>

<p>This particular popup lighting design is the first in a <a href="http://www.popuplighting.com/">series of pieces</a> that combine abstracted animals (including an owl and a peacock) and minimalist home lighting design &#8211; a sort of modern (and less morbid) take on faux taxidermy.</p>

<p><a href="http://about.me/bikodesign">Chen Bikovski</a> is a Tel Aviv-based designer exploring the relation of light and space. <em>&#8220;Since I was a child, I was fascinated by Pop-up books…The excitement before turning a page, a simple pull that uncovers a whole new world. I loved how the story came to life, how the books created a fantasy world that flew off the page. The magic, the excitement, the naiveté&#8230;&#8221;</em></p>
