<p>Istanbul, Turkey, conjures to mind far-off days of Constantinople and historic works of architecture, from stone masonry homes ot ornate mosques, but there is a colorful variety to the city&#8217;s more modern buildings, too, as captured in this photo series.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115202" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/colored-facades-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115201" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/colored-stacks-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>An architect and photographer, <a href="http://www.yenertorun.net/">Yener Torun</a> photographs elements of the city&#8217;s past, but focuses mostly on more contemporary structures with minimalist forms, modern geometries, and above all: rich rainbows of color.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115200" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/rainbow-tower-644x781.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="781" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115199" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/chromatic-balconies-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>One could get the wrong impression looking at his work, because indeed it takes work at times to find the most vibrant examples.“I dig every corner of the city to unearth these colorful gems,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Finding these places in this gray mass is quite like a treasure hunt.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115196" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/colored-steps-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115194" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/wrapping-rainbow-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>“My primary motive was to document a different, less-known part of Istanbul to escape from the one dimensional and orientalist perception…I believe increasing the variety of aspects provides a better understanding of the city, both for the viewers and me. Even long-term residents can’t believe these pictures were taken in the city they live in.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115198" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/colorful-facade-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115195" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/color-lines-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>So in some ways, he surfaces lesser-seen sides of the city. Together, his photos paint a picture, or create a collage, of a very selective sort, but then again: what architectural photographers really do otherwise? Near San Francisco, the colorful hilltop houses of Daly City often become stand-ins for local vernacular, even if they only show one side.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115192" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/rainbow-road-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71018" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-city-skyline-468x263.jpg" alt="istanbul city skyline" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>After a huge and lengthy legal battle fought on various fronts by developers, municipalities and the Council of State, the Turkish government has ordered the partial destruction or total demolition of multiple large buildings said to threaten the historic architectural heritage of Istanbul <em>(above image via <a href="http://gorkorg.blogspot.co.uk/">Gokorg</a>)</em>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71015" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-historic-skyline-468x290.jpg" alt="istanbul historic skyline" width="468" height="290" /></p>
<p>When speaking of skylines, one generally thinks of of the towers that define them &#8211; but the courts have ruled that modern-day Istanbul (not Constantinople) is not allowed to reach for new heights, or even maintain its currently-constructed ones. Adding pressure to the mix, Unesco has threatened to revoke the city&#8217;s status as a <a href="http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/356">World Heritage Site</a>, in part due to rampant urban development<em> (additional images by <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/aigle_dore/">Moyan Brenn</a>)</em>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71016" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-night-view-468x290.jpg" alt="istanbul night view" width="468" height="290" /></p>
<p>At the heart of this particular legal issue are views of a series of structures long central to the civic identity of Istanbul, including the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque, all of which are now being overshadowed by three new structures standing dozens of stories tall. These new threats to the existing sihuoette are part of <a href="http://www.onaltidokuzistanbul.com/#">Onalti Dokuz</a> complex, a residential development already largely finished.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71017" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-city-streets-468x290.jpg" alt="istanbul city streets" width="468" height="290" /></p>
<p>Detractors are celebrating the victory, which started with legal attacks beginning last year. From <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/">Dezeen</a> and the Turkish newspaper <a href="http://www.todayszaman.com/home">Todays Zaman</a>, <em>&#8220;two legal cases were launched against the development – one seeking cancellation of the permits for the construction of the building and another to shut down the construction and destroy parts of the buildings that had already been completed.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71013" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-sunet-468x290.jpg" alt="istanbul sunet" width="468" height="290" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-71014" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/istanbul-distant-hills-468x290.jpg" alt="istanbul distant hills" width="468" height="290" /></p>
<p>The government has rejected appeals by the developers and city, and it remains unclear who will pay for the cost of the necessary size reductions the buildings in question must now undergo. It is easy to see why critics would feel threatened by these and other new developments, but at some point one has to wonder: who has the right to suppress urban growth, and where do we draw the line between preservation and urbanization?</p>

<p>Dispose of your empty plastic bottle in this little sidewalk kiosk, and it&#8217;ll dispense enough food to feed a stray cat or dog. Aiming to help both the environment and homeless animals, the vending machine by Turkish company <a href="http://pugedon.com/">Pugedon</a> operates at no cost to the city since the value of the plastic pays for the food.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-69733" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Stray-Animal-Vending-Machine-2.jpg" alt="Stray Animal Vending Machine 2" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/U8WxtuhiaJY?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Referred to by the company as &#8216;ecological life support,&#8217; the vending machine is an answer to a pressing problem in Istanbul: around 150,000 stray cats and dogs. Anyone passing by with a little bottled water can also choose to empty the rest of their water into the machine for the animals.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-69731" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Stray-Animal-Vending-Machine-4.jpg" alt="Stray Animal Vending Machine 4" width="468" height="353" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-69730" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Stray-Animal-Vending-Machine-5.jpg" alt="Stray Animal Vending Machine 5" width="468" height="296" /></p>
<p>These animals generally rely on the kindness of local residents to survive, and while some love having them around, others <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/08/23/stray-cats-strut-istanbuls-streets-symbol-tradition-churning-metropolis/">believe they&#8217;re dangerous and a source of disease</a>. The locals who host Facebook campaigns to gather supplies to care for the animals are countered by attempts to poison them.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-69732" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Stray-Animal-Vending-Machine-3.jpg" alt="Stray Animal Vending Machine 3" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>While this vending machine isn&#8217;t an answer to the problem of homeless animals, it does offer an interesting compromise to care for them without putting a burden on Istanbul residents or the city.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-19157" title="hagia-sophia" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/hagia-sophia.jpg" width="468" height="358" /></p>
<p><!--wsa:gooold-->One of the oldest and largest cathedrals in the world hid a fantastic secret for centuries, one that was often rumored but not confirmed. The vast, splendid <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia">Hagia Sophia</a>, which is now a museum, sits atop an ancient series of underground tunnels said to connect the cathedral with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_Cistern">Basilica Cistern</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes%27_Islands">Princes&#8217; Islands</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topkap%C4%B1_Palace">Topkapi Palace</a>. Director Göksel Gülensoy has enjoyed a long-standing love of the Hagia Sophia, and he decided to embark on a scuba diving expedition under the building to unlock some of her ancient secrets.</p>
<p><span id="more-19156"></span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-19158" title="hagia-sophia-interior" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/hagia-sophia-interior.jpg" width="468" height="337" /></p>
<p>Gülensoy <a href="http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=diving-into-the-secrets-of-hagia-sophia-2009-08-04">began his documentary project in 1998</a>, but budget concerns and Turkish government red tape delayed its completion until late 2009. His 50-minute film, &#8220;In the Depths of Hagia Sophia&#8221; (or “Ayasofya’n?n Derinliklerinde”) shows a side of the historic structure that has never before been explored in depth, let alone filmed. Along with two divers and four spelunkers, the director delved into the mysterious depths to see what, exactly, Hagia Sophia was hiding.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-19160" title="hagia-sophia-diver" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/hagia-sophia-diver.jpg" width="468" height="621" /></p>
<p>The team began by opening the reservoir doors in the main hall; the two doors had both been shut for quite some time, and never before had a diver been allowed into the reservoir. After studying the small first chamber, the team moved on to the larger second reservoir. There they found flasks thought to have been left behind by British soldiers in 1917, a chain which may have contained a prisoner at one time, and various other bits and pieces of the cathedral. The spelunkers then took over and moved into the two passageways beneath the Hagia Sophia.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-19161" title="diving-beneath-hagia-sophia-team" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/diving-beneath-hagia-sophia-team.jpg" width="468" height="354" /></p>
<p>Beneath the huge cathedral, the team found sealed passages, a graveyard full of children&#8217;s bones, and the burial chamber of Hagia Sophia&#8217;s first priest. Threats of gas leaks, landslides and collapses weighed heavily on everyone&#8217;s minds, but the entire team emerged safely. For their own peace of mind, and to head off any rumors that might arise in the future, every person who dove beneath Hagia Sophia that day underwent a full-body X-ray to prove that no artifacts had been removed from the site.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-19159" title="in-the-depths-of-hagia-sophia" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/in-the-depths-of-hagia-sophia.jpg" width="468" height="622" /></p>
<p>After the project, it became clear that Gülensoy and his team had disproven many of the myths surrounding the ancient cathedral. The passages long thought to lead to the Basilica Cistern and Princes&#8217; Islands were <a href="http://www.alaturka.info/en/marmara/culture-history/secrets-of-hagia-sophia.html">found to be nonexistent</a>. However, the exploration led Turkish officials and the Hagia Sophia Museum Director to believe that further research should be carried out to see what other mysteries may be hiding beneath this beloved building. If he can gain the necessary government permissions, Gülensoy plans to return to make another film about the hidden history of Hagia Sophia.</p>
