<p>The East Coast Greenway is already a third of the way to completion, and when finished will stretch from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida, passing through 16 states and 25 cities along the way.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94747" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ecg-644x292.jpg" alt="ecg" width="644" height="292" /></p>
<p>Developed by the non-profit <a href="http://www.greenway.org/">East Coast Greenway Alliance</a>, the aim is to provide a continuous and ever-changing set of views and experiences to travelers on foot or in non-motorized vehicles.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94748" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/east-coast-trail-644x431.jpg" alt="east coast trail" width="644" height="431" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.42857;">Its creators note that the &#8220;route has been chosen to provide the traveler with an ever-changing, interesting and scenic landscape, whether urban, suburban, small town, industrial or rural,&#8221; accessible to cyclists, walkers, joggers and runners. </span>Along the way, the Greenway also syncs up with public transportation at key spots, allowing easy access and egress for people seeking to pursue one stretch of it or another.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/ry_GzVeUQWA?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about seeing America at the right speed, where you can take in all of the culture around you. And you don&#8217;t have a windshield between yourself and the community.&#8221; While the project has been in the works for years, new funding and permissions gained in the last year have propelled it forward more quickly, helping its facilitators connect the dots along the nearly 3,000-mile route.</p>

<p>If you thought Twin Peaks was suspenseful, test your mettle on the new glass-bottomed Brave Man&#8217;s Bridge connecting two cliffs in the Hunan province of China and spanning nearly 1,000 feet.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/GoUnJGf_q9o?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84932" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-panel-bridge-below-468x296.jpg" alt="glass panel bridge below" width="468" height="296" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84935" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-china-walkway-468x302.jpg" alt="glass china walkway" width="468" height="302" /></p>
<p>Located in the Shiniuzhai National Geological Park (images by <a href="http://photo.sina.cn/" target="_blank">Sina</a>), the bridge employees a new type of glass 25 times stronger than the ordinary variety, achieving its structural purpose despite being just 1 inch thick.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84934" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-kneeling-walks-468x311.jpg" alt="glass kneeling walks" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84933" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-bridge-above-468x248.jpg" alt="glass bridge above" width="468" height="248" /></p>
<p>Framed in steel, the converted bridge previously held wooden walking platforms, but to compete with the rise of <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/08/26/crossing-the-divide-10-totally-atypical-bridge-designs/2/">glass walkways</a> around the world these were swapped out for glass equivalents.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84936" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-park-468x311.jpg" alt="glass park" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84931" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/glass-bridge-side-468x298.jpg" alt="glass bridge side" width="468" height="298" /></p>
<p>While there are other similarly glass-bottomed bridges arcing out over canyons or crossing natural expanses, this is the longest glass suspension bridge to date. Its engineers have assured the public that it is safe, even if feisty tourists jump on the panels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85006" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/cracked-panel-china-468x624.jpg" alt="cracked panel china" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>Update: just days after opening, a mug dropped by a tourist has already cracked one of the glass panels, though without compromising its structural integrity.  Lee Dong Hai posted about his experience on social media: &#8220;I was almost at the end and suddenly I heard a sound, my foot shook a little. I looked down and I saw that there was a crack in the floor.&#8221;</p>
