People convert all kinds of unlikely objects into homes: sheds, shipping containers, school buses and even decommissioned wartime bunkers. These creative reclaimed homes can range from tiny to surprisingly spacious, but rarely are they quite as micro-sized (and round) as one particular project by Argentinean architect Martín Marro.

“Bunker” began as an exploration of Marro’s memories of his childhood home, which was converted from a 1940 service station. The architect sought to reconstruct not the physical space itself, but rather how he remembers it looking and feeling through the eyes of a child. As part of this venture, Marro found an old diesel tank with which to fulfill an unusual vision.

From outside, the bright yellow tank still looks just as it did when it was in use. But open the door and you’ll find an unexpected sight: an incredibly compact dwelling complete with a lounge chair, bed, television, lighting and storage space. Photographs of his own architectural projects are fixed to the rounded walls.

Mimicking a tank that stood outside his childhood home, the micro house essentially compacts Marro’s memory of the experience into a portable dwelling. “I transformed it into a bunker-cabin for then to seal it and perpetuate it, capturing time, thinking that the space I make present is an archeology of the future,” he says.

The “Bunker” cabin was initially put on display outside Marro’s actual childhood home before traveling to the #mac2018 contemporary art fair in the city of Córdoba-Argentina.

Not only does this particular piece combine an entertainment center, a desk and a room divider, it also pulls an extra bed out from underneath the main bed that’s raised on a platform just behind it. Then, both the owner and a guest can sleep in what feels like separate bedrooms.

A Closet Office/Reading Nook Combo

Could you sacrifice a closet to receive an office in return? This setup combines a small corner desk, shelving and a reading nook in a space that would normally be dark and, depending on how you’ve organized it, potentially difficult to use to its full potential. Add some storage under the nook seat and you’re really using that space efficiently.

A Half-Loft with Storage Underneath

If you’ve got plenty of vertical space, but not much floor space, check this out. Chelsea and Ryan, the owners of this Toronto apartment, built a DIY loft that raises the bed just about halfway to the ceiling in order to use the storage space beneath it more effectively, Plus, they use the open wall space on either side of the bed as a closet.

Everything You Need in Sweden’s Smallest Apartment

Looking like no more than a shed from the outside, this tiny cottage built as affordable housing for students in Lund, Sweden doesn’t seem like it could possibly offer much until you see the inside. There’s a workspace tucked under the bed loft, a mini closet, a dining table for two with storage above it, a kitchenette, a bathroom and lots of racks and shelves. Those skylights help a lot, too.

Prior to renovation, this apartment in Barcelona required an awkward step up onto the slightly elevated terrace. The aptly named Nook Architects decided to make that platform an intentional part of the living space by extending it into the room and inserting storage beneath it.

Inspired by the shape of a butterfly when it closes its wings, Valerie Schweitzer Architects’ ‘Butterfly Studio’ is a sculptural detached office full of cleverly placed windows that target views toward the yard rather than the main house for a sense of privacy and seclusion. Set in the backyard of a home in Westport, Connecticut, the design recently won an American Architecture Prize in the small architecture category.

Tiny houses of all kinds are practically ubiquitous at this point, so it’s kind of hard to stand out among them in terms of aesthetic choices. But ‘Butterfly House’ ditches convention altogether with its jagged floor plan and a sense of solidity balanced by lots and lots of glass.

The structure’s angled panels are alternately clad in recycled teak and stucco; narrow windows frame picturesque views of the landscaping and aid in cross-ventilation, bringing in breezes from the nearby Long Island Sound.

The coolest part is the faceted glass roof made of steel and thermally insulated glass, which floods the interior with enough daylight for the artist homeowner to work from sunrise to sunset without turning a light on. The 350-square-foot studio also boasts concrete floors with radiant heating to accommodate a wheeled chair, and has its own half-bath.
