<p>The recent comeback of modernized (and modified) mobile homes has seen many novel transformations of cars and trucks into various sizes of living space, but the <a href="http://www.doubleback.co.uk/">Doubleback</a> may have more secret additional area than any other vehicle of its size and class.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/GIG9P0lB1iA?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>These modified T5 transports have a pop-up top, but also a slide-out back adding up to six feet of extra length &#8211; each of these extensions can sleep two people.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91848" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/doubleback-diagram-468x285.png" alt="doubleback diagram" width="468" height="285" /></p>
<p>Self-leveling feet drop down from the rear extension, making sure the cantilevered zone remains level at all times, including on variegated terrain.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91849" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/doubleback-rear-468x312.jpg" alt="doubleback rear" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Further exterior space can be covered as well via a roll-out canopy top or custom flip-up door, turning parking lots and campgrounds into cookout spaces and backyards.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91850" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/doubleback-interior-468x312.jpg" alt="doubleback interior" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>Various configurations are possible, sleeping up to four people (drop-down beds in the back and additional sleeping space above) and seating depending on the design details. Newer models also include space for a camping toilet and cooking amenities.</p>

<p>Treating the seat and back as blank slates for expression, the Layer Chair allows its owner to slip in and slide out works of art and design, transforming the look of the furniture on demand.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87643" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-hologram-pop-art-468x312.jpg" alt="layer hologram pop art" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87648" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-print-insertion-468x312.jpg" alt="layer print insertion" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The clear acrylic framework &#8220;allows for a see-through structure. Both the back and the base of the chair have a void where the user can fit three different layers of printed or colored acrylic, or even wood, glass, or any other material that comes in mind.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87646" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-chair-mod-effect-468x312.jpg" alt="layer chair mod effect" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87647" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-chair-diy-mod-468x312.jpg" alt="layer chair diy mod" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The approach by South Korean graphic and industrial designer Sohyun Yun is intended to address aesthetic limitations of traditional chairs, which are locked into a single style or look. Instead, through layers, this seat is visually refreshed through user-driven modifications.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87642" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-normal-seat-use-468x312.jpg" alt="layer normal seat use" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87641" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-seat-insert-468x331.jpg" alt="layer seat insert" width="468" height="331" /></p>
<p>Anything is possible, from pairing a hologram back with an Andy Warhol seat print, to slotting in more conventional looking pieces and parts aligned with other furniture looks and styles.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87649" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-custom-chair-color-468x312.jpg" alt="layer custom chair color" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87644" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layers-sliding-into-place-468x312.jpg" alt="layers sliding into place" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87645" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/layer-simple-colors-seat-468x312.jpg" alt="layer simple colors seat" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The layers also allow for experimentation and playful interactions between sheets, since their patterns can be partial and/or semi-opaque. A number of layers come with the initial object, but others can be created or bought by users as well.</p>

<p>Both the first person to bike across the San Francisco Bay and over the Hudson River is great, but being able to skip traffic jams and cycle to work over the water daily is even better, according to Judah Schiller. And now he is looking to take his invention into the mainstream, so to speak.</p>

<p>Co-founder of the <a href="http://aikoagency.com/">Aiko Agency</a> (focused aptly on innovation and design), this tinkerer built his own bike from a kit, then hacked it to work on the water. He has since founded <a href="http://baycycleproject.com/" target="_blank" data-ls-seen="1">BayCycle</a> in an effort to make such mods widely available, particularly given the shortcomings of regional bike lanes.</p>

<p>Schiller&#8217;s augmentations fit inside of a backpack and can be deployed in a matter of minutes. They consist mainly of a pair of inflatable pontoons, metal mounting rods and a propeller attachment.</p>

<p>Along his way, he encounters a different set of more leisurely traveling companions, from sailors to paddlers, many of whom are naturally quite intrigued by his contraption.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47207" alt="diy design ideas" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-design-ideas.jpg" width="468" height="400" /></p>
<p>From color-your-own and converted-umbrella dresses to hoodies-turned-tote-bags and color-scanning sewing machines, a simple, clever and clearly-executed design concept can be as brilliant as the most fashion forward runway piece. See some cool and colorful prototypes first, or skip ahead to learn simple tricks and tips to turn your most ordinary, disused and abused clothes into one-of-a-kind wonders.</p>
<h4>Inside the Lines: Self-Colored Convertible Outfits</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="diy self colored dress" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-self-colored-dress.jpg" width="468" height="765" /></p>
<p>Consider <a href="http://berbersoepboer.nl/">Berber Soepboer</a>, who started with the most obvious of blank slates: a black-and-white base made to be filled in by the wearer with colored markers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="diy convertible color outfits" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-convertible-color-outfits.jpg" width="468" height="792" /></p>
<p>From that baseline, she has gone on to  incorporate buttons, snaps and folds that allow each outfit to convert on the fly.</p>
<h4>Wash, Rinse, Recolor: Color-Changing Dresses</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="diy color changing dress" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-color-changing-dress.jpg" width="468" height="622" /></p>
<p>For those afraid they might color outside of the lines, <a href="http://fernandobrizio.com/">Fernando Brizio</a> has an even simpler alternative. A series of simple pockets in these modest white outfits provide the basis for custom color schemes.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/AfSQE0A2TP8?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>You can choose how to arrange the results by deciding which colors to slot in where, and watching them bleed outward to form patterns &#8230; then wash them out and start again.</p>
<h4>Upcycled Apparel: Old Shirts to New Tops &amp; Skirts</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="diy upcycled top skirt" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-upcycled-top-skirt.jpg" width="468" height="591" /></p>
<p>But what about your existing wardrobe? It turns out there is lot to be done on that front as well, like this series of old baggy shirts turned into stellar new tops and dresses by <a href="http://www.notcot.com/archives/2007/08/mari_urban_rene.php">Mari Santos</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="diy upcycled clothing ideas" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/diy-upcycled-clothing-ideas.jpg" width="468" height="516" /></p>
<p>Step by step, she takes clothing items that would normally be destined for the dumpster (or at best: the thrift store) and makes dynamic new outfits from them.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21824" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Montage4.gif" width="468" height="400" /></p>
<p><!--wsa:gooold-->As steampunk connoisseurs and hobbyists become veterans at their craft, they&#8217;ve been increasingly turning their cog-loving eyes toward their most modern fixtures: their computer and accessories. These artisans have always had a field day retro fitting their keyboards, but monitors, mouses, and flash drives are all becoming targets of the steampunk obsessed. Take a look at 36 of the most breathtaking steampunk computer mods:</p>
<p><span id="more-21823"></span><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21825" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Steampunk-Computer-Monitors.gif" width="468" height="510" /></p>
<h6>(Images via <a href="http://www.techchee.com/2008/04/24/steampunk-lcd-monitor/">techchee</a>,<a href="http://www.toxel.com/tech/2009/07/12/12-steampunk-gadgets-and-designs/"> toxel</a>, <a href="http://blog.freepeople.com/2008/09/steampunk-workshop/">freepeople</a>, <a href="http://www.desktopped.com/2010/01/steampunk-showcase-a-collection-of-unique-steampunk-mods/">desktopped</a>)</h6>
<p>Computer monitors have always been drab affairs, but they&#8217;re also the focal point of any steampunk project. Old monitors are a great fit for large cabinet-style setups, while the more modern flat screens are perfect for the sleek elegant look. What&#8217;s the use of having a beautifully modified monitor if the rest of your setup screams Office Max?</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21826" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Steampunk-Computer-Mouse.gif" width="468" height="634" /></p>
<h6>(Images via <a href="http://gizmodo.com/256460/jakes-steampunk-computer-mouse">gizmodo</a>, <a href="http://unlacethevictorians.blogspot.com/2010/01/steampunk-gameboy.html">unlacethevictorians</a>, <a href="http://gadgetsin.com/ultra-cool-steampunk-pc-mouse.htm">gadgetsin</a>,<a href="http://www.toxel.com/tech/2009/07/12/12-steampunk-gadgets-and-designs/"> toxel</a>, <a href="http://www.uniquedaily.com/steampunk-computer-mouse/">uniquedaily</a>)</h6>
<p>One&#8217;s computer mouse is typically one of the dullest computer accessories, but it&#8217;s also one of the coolest to modify. As long as it can slide, and has a few buttons, anything goes. Most modified mouses require a lot of bronze, and either down and dirty minimalist structuring, or incredibly ornate and gilded styling.</p>

<p>Many steampunk computer mods combine every aspect of the setup into one gorgeous theme. The speakers, monitor, hardware, and mouse all become a part of one incredibly intricate machine. Any visitor to your home will be impressed.</p>

<p>The hardware for a desktop computer is typically kept in an incredibly boring tower under one&#8217;s desk. Even as  more modern computers begin to escape the tower setup, it&#8217;s still an easily modified piece of equipment, and some steampunk enthusiasts take advantage of its size to create large contraptions that look straight out of a Victorian scientist&#8217;s lab. Granted the last image is clearly just for costuming purposes, but it wouldn&#8217;t be a stretch to see an operational model make the rounds.</p>

<p>The computer keyboard has always been a favorite with steampunk hackers, as it doesn&#8217;t need to be upgraded or replaced as often as other aspects of the computer, and lend themselves beautifully to one of the steampunk lovers favorite decorations: typewriter keys.</p>

<p>Datamancer is famous for his steampunk modifications, and he&#8217;s even devised a simple and elegant way to hide his scanner out of view, by giving it the appearance of an oversized ledger.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21831" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Steampunk-Speakers.gif" width="468" height="438" /></p>

<p>Steampunk modifications almost always have more form than they need to function, but that&#8217;s a lot of the fun. Speakers are no different, with a lot of creative types hearkening back to the old style vitriola that used to sit in a great grandparent&#8217;s living room.</p>

<p>Flash drives may not be the most exciting piece of computer equipment, but they are on hand a lot of the time, and they&#8217;re easily modified into something that&#8217;s actually quite beautiful. Throw on a few gears and cogs to make it look like the drive actually does some physical work, and you&#8217;ve got yourself a memory stick straight out of the 1800&#8217;s!</p>
