These hotel rooms can be stacked on top of each other, swapped out for easy renovation and easily transported from one place to the next thanks to their modular design. From a shipping container hotel to floating hotel with detachable boat-like rooms, the 13 designs featured here are anything but stale and static.

Modular Bamboo Hotel

Using cheap and highly renewable bamboo as a sort of scaffolding, the ‘One with the Birds’ modular hotel concept by Penda stacks pyramid-shaped volumes high into the sky while barely making a mark on the ground below. The low-impact, tent-themed hotels would be easy and quick to reproduce and expand as necessary. Inspired by Native American tipis, the structures use X-shaped bamboo joints to hold horizontal bamboo rods in place, which support the flooring. Joints would be tied together with rope so the whole structure can be disassembled and reused in other projects.

Bayside Marina Hotel

Long, narrow two-story prefabricated cottages based on the form of the shipping container are grouped together along the seaside of Yokohama as the ‘Bayside Marina Hotel.’ The containers are staggered along the site to give each residence a different view. The units are fabricated in Thailand and transported to Japan, where they’re assembled on-site.

Botel Floating Hotel with Detachable Rooms

Ever wish you could detach your hotel room from the main building and move it somewhere else? With ‘Botel,’ not only can you do that, your hotel room is actually a boat. The concept by Ivan Filipovic enables guests to explore their surroundings autonomously while retaining access to all of the amenities provided by the core structure. Dock at the main part of the hotel to have dinner or go to a nightclub, or enjoy a little privacy in a separate area of the bay.

Shelf Hotel: Swappable Modules in a Frame

What if hotel rooms of various sizes, shapes and levels of luxury could simply be swapped out like objects on a shelf? The Shelf Hotel by 3Gatti, envisioned for Xian, China, sets little removable modules within a framework raised above ground level to preserve green space below. The modules would consist of hotels as well as homes and offices.

CitizenM Hotels

Now open in various cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Glasgow and London (pictured), CitizenM hotels provide affordable luxury by fitting compact yet comfortable rooms within a simple frame for an industrial, urban appearance. The shipping container-like rooms are stacked on top of each other like LEGOs and contain a king size bed, pod-like toilet, shower and sink as well as lighting and other functions controlled via iPad.

New York City residents could have a stylish and safe place to live in less than 15 hours after a catastrophic natural or manmade disaster with these modular ‘pop-up’ apartments. Developed by Garrison Architects for the NYC Office of Emergency Management, the Urban Post Disaster Housing Prototype makes it easy to create compact multi-story, multi-family dwellings on demand.

Each individual unit is self-contained and can host families of various sizes, expanding from a one bedroom up to a three bedroom. Prefabricated in Indiana, the units also feature a living room, bathroom, fully-equipped kitchen, storage space and balcony. Multiple units can be stacked vertically or set side-by-side in a variety of urban settings, from vacant lots to public spaces.

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy made it clear that fast, safe, durable housing is critical once the immediate danger of a disaster has passed. The result of over 6 years of research into emergency housing by by the City of New York, this design allows residents to remain in their communities instead of being whisked away to shelters for months at a time.

The units were designed to meet the strictest zoning requirements in the United States so they can be quickly deployed to any location in the country within hours. A total of 5 modules were created for the prototype, which will remain on the corner of Cadman Plaza East and Red Cross Place for up to two years. Guests will be invited to stay in the units for five-day intervals to see just how comfortable these housing units can be.

Shipping containers plastered in stark graphic branding are stacked in a Jenga-like configuration within a steel frame at the Hive-Inn, a concept hotel by OVA Studio.

Each container gets a unique interior design created by a brand, whether a luxury fashion house like Louis Vuitton, a tech company like Samsung or a celebrity like Lady Gaga. The advertiser’s branding is also painted on the exterior, creating an experience that immerses the occupants in the sponsor’s chosen visuals.

While some people aren’t crazy about feeling like ads are being force-fed to them, it’s not hard to imagine die-hard fans of companies like, say, Ferrari, jumping at the chance to stay in one of these rooms.

OVA envisions the containers being leased to individuals or companies who need temporary space, used not just as hotel rooms but also offices or retail stores. The containers plug into a grid system with a service core and slots for small terraces.

Lookotel plans to roll out low-cost modular 'capsule hotels' across Spain and the rest of Europe which feature larger rooms than those in Japan's pod hotels.

In Japan, the rooms aren’t much larger than coffins – tiny stacked pods with beds, a television, a radio and little else. But one company is seeking to take that ‘capsule hotel’ concept and make it more livable. Lookotels plans to roll out prefab modular hotels in Spain that are quick to construct and cheap to maintain, with rooms around 100 square feet.

Each energy-efficient 100-room hotel will be built (offsite) and assembled within six months, offering low-cost travel lodging that emphasizes modernity and convenience with self check-in and -out kiosks. No shared bathrooms here – the diminutive sleeping quarters include their own private bathrooms as well as a sofa bed, television, desk, chair and television. A 24-hour service line allows a small staff to attend to guests’ needs.

The capsule hotel movement started in the 1970s with Japan’s famed Nakagin Capsule Tower, which was scheduled to be demolished until its architect Kisho Kurokawa realized that his design could allow the modules to be ‘unplugged’ and replaced. While many such pod hotels are now more often used as low-cost homes for low-paid urban workers or the jobless, others are getting modern makeovers. The recently opened 9h Hotel in Kyoto provides just enough space to sleep for $50 a night.

Lookotels has secured financing to build 10 hotels over the next 5 years throughout Europe, and is seeking partners in the U.S.
