<p>Connoisseurs may look to artisanal naming conventions when selecting their brew, but some of us (like books via covers) judge beers at least partly by their colors.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-90209" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/beertone-colored-can-design-468x721.jpg" alt="beertone colored can design" width="468" height="721" /></p>
<p>A Spanish design agency named <a href="http://txaber.net/beer-colors/">Txaber</a> has matched brew types with Pantone hues to create a collection of color-coded labels, providing sneak peaks to potential drinkers.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-90208" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/beer-colored-cans-aluminum.jpg" alt="beer colored cans aluminum" width="448" height="656" /></p>
<p>Thanks to the recent comeback of the can (versus historical preferences for bottles), these might just make it on the shelves. In turn, can designs give designers a broader canvass to work on, wrapping 360-degree cylinders. As a display strategy, these are striking alone as well as side-by-side as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-90205" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/beertone-468x381.jpg" alt="beertone" width="468" height="381" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-90204" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/beertones-468x263.jpg" alt="beertones" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>Similar project, dubbed &#8220;<a href="http://shop.piwo.com.br/">Beertone</a>&#8221; by designers Alexander Michelbach and Daniel Eugster, provides RGB, CMYK and HTML code color values for a variety of extant Swiss beers, aided by the breweries.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-90203" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/beertone-ad-468x661.jpg" alt="beertone ad" width="468" height="661" /></p>
<p>There is something accessible and yet artsy about this all, distilling a brew to its color and letting those of us who are more into lights and ambers (pilsner&#8217;s in particular, if you aim to by this author a six-pack) avoid mistakenly winding up with a brown or black.</p>

<p>Solving a series of long-standing issues associated with taking out the typical fast food trifecta, this clever carrying case is a useful alternative to Happy Meal boxes, bags and cupholders that work better for cars than people traveling on foot or by bike.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/IUFshL9niko?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>The solution is more subtle than it might first appear &#8211; yes, it solves the timeless question of how to hold a drink as well as a meal, but it also separates out the warm foods (french fries and hamburger above) from the cool drink (soda or shake suspended below), then unfolds into a ready-to-eat spread. Thin cardboard makes the entire container easy to collapse as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82641" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/im-lovin-it-468x332.jpg" alt="im lovin it" width="468" height="332" /></p>
<p>Customers can hold the package in their hand or slip it over the handlebars and continue cycling unencumbered. Targeted initially toward markets in two bicycle-friendly cities (Copenhagen, Denmark and Medellin, Colombia), the company is also looking to give these a go in Amsterdam, Holland and Tokyo, Japan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82634" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/mcbike-drive-through-468x312.jpg" alt="mcbike drive through" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82636" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/mcbike-system-468x264.jpg" alt="mcbike system" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p>For now, it is a trial redesign that is as much about marketing toward young urban bikers, but if the packaging is sound there seems to be no obvious reason for McDonalds not to ultimately deploy these around the world (and for other fast food chains to follow suit).</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48740" alt="Designer Bottles Main" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Main.jpg" width="468" height="401" /></p>
<p>Most companies are primarily concerned with price when it comes to beverage and liquid product packaging, but what if designers were given free reign to tweak the standard designs so they&#8217;re more user-friendly? These 14 packaging design concepts solve annoyances like caps that are difficult to open, bottle shapes that force you to crane your neck to drink and the frustrating inability to reach those last drops of product in the bottom of a soap bottle.</p>
<h4>Soft Hanging Soap and Shampoo Bottles</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48718" alt="Designer Bottles Soft Hanging" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Soft-Hanging.jpg" width="468" height="327" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.yankodesign.com/2010/05/13/no-shelf-for-my-shampoo/">Soft bottles with suction cups</a> to attach them to the shower walls eliminate all the clutter that various toiletries can create in the bathroom. These bottles are made from cornstarch vinyl, so they&#8217;re easy to squeeze, and making them transparent may help distinguish between different types of products stored inside.</p>
<h4>Easy Drink</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48737" alt="Designer Bottles Easy Drink 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Easy-Drink-1.jpg" width="468" height="585" /></p>
<p><a href=" http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/10/10/the-45-degree-neck/">This simple change</a> in the standard water bottle design seems so obvious, it&#8217;s amazing that it hasn&#8217;t been implemented already. Moving the mouth of the bottle from the top to a 45-degree angle makes it much easier to drink and re-fill. No more craning your neck to get those last drops.</p>
<h4>Dumbbell Bottle</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48734" alt="Designer Bottles Dumbbell 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Dumbbell-2.jpg" width="468" height="379" /></p>
<p>Since you&#8217;re probably carrying a water bottle or sports drink while working out anyway, why not make it do more? <a href=" http://www.yankodesign.com/2008/07/28/this-plastic-bottle-makes-you-muscley/">The Dumbbell sports drink bottle </a>won&#8217;t exactly get you ripped at just .5kg (1.1 pounds), but you could always fill it with something heavier when the drink is gone.</p>
<h4>EasyOpen Tab-Pull Bottle Cap</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48733" alt="Designer Bottles EasyOpen" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-EasyOpen.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Sometimes you&#8217;re caught without a bottle opener, and using your teeth isn&#8217;t exactly a good idea unless you&#8217;re willing to part with them. What if bottle caps had little easy-pull tabs on them? The <a href=" http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/06/28/better-than-an-opener/">&#8216;EasyOpen&#8217; concept</a> would certainly do what the name suggests.</p>
<h4>Aqua Jar Turns Bottles into Pitchers</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48732" alt="Designer Bottles Aqua Jar" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Aqua-Jar.jpg" width="468" height="349" /></p>
<p>The <a href=" http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/11/09/aqua-jar-transforms-any-water-bottle-into-an-easy-pour-pitcher/">Aqua Jar by GH Lab</a> extends the life of a plastic bottle by turning it into an easy-pour pitcher. It&#8217;s made from biodegradable and recyclable plastic, and fits the universal coil of any plastic bottle.</p>
<h4>Eco Coke</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48727" alt="Designer Bottles Eco Coke" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Eco-Coke.jpg" width="468" height="491" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48726" alt="Designer Bottles Eco Coke 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Eco-Coke-2.jpg" width="468" height="397" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Same classic design, just greener,&#8221; says Andrew Kim, designer of the <a href=" http://www.minimallyminimal.com/blog/2010/3/15/ecocoke.html">Eco Coke bottle.</a> So what makes it different &#8211; and superior &#8211; to the current bottle design? Aside from being 100% plant-based, this bottle is also collapsible, making it easier to keep it on hand until a recycling bin is nearby. Since it has a smaller footprint, space for nearly two additional bottles is recovered within standard boxes.</p>
<h4>Retap</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-48738" alt="Designer Bottles Retap" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Designer-Bottles-Retap.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>While some people will reuse plastic bottles a few times, they&#8217;re awkward to clean, and can leach chemicals into the water over time. Glass is safer &#8211; and nicer-looking. <a href=" http://mocoloco.com/fresh2/2011/08/17/retap-refillable-water-bottles.php">Retap is a designer water bottle concept</a> that&#8217;s easily refillable, without any sharp corners to make cleaning difficult.</p>

The hand-crafted revolution in beer has led to a backlash against the bland and mass-produced &#8211; both in the brews, and in the packaging. These 20 examples of creative beer cans, labels and cartons are cleverly tailored to the brand and the individual brew, and together, they&#8217;d make store shelves look like art galleries.</p>
<h4>Ale Satan by Ethan Bennett</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44129" title="beer-design-ale-satan" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-ale-satan.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.behance.net/gallery/Ale-Satan-Package-Design/393783">behance</a>)</h6>
<p>The devil is definitely in the details of this amazing design by Ethan Bennet, cleverly named &#8216;Ale Satan.&#8217; The cardboard packaging features devil horns on the sides, and reads &#8216;666 Pack&#8217; across the handle. The bottle caps are printed with pentagrams.</p>
<h4>Porter de Glace by Mathieu Lacombe</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44130" title="beer-design-porter-de-glace" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-porter-de-glace.jpg" width="468" height="556" /></p>

<p>Rough hand-drawn typography characterizes this prototype packaging for the Ice Porter by Quebec&#8217;s Brasseurs du Monde, by Mathieu Lacombe.</p>
<h4>Carrots Beer by Pereira &amp; O&#8217;Dell</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44131" title="beer-design-carrot" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-carrot.jpg" width="468" height="449" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://pereiraodell.com/">pereiraodell.com</a>)</h6>
<p>&#8220;The objective was to create a buzz around this high-end fashion boutique (CARROTS) and specifically around their men’s line, driving new male customers into the store. We created a limited edition, designer beer made from carrots. We brewed the beer, handcrafted the bottle wraps, and applied the labels. The 22oz. burlap-wrapped bottles were hand-delivered as gifts to specifically targeted men and the 12oz. beers were served at CARROTS-sponsored events and in-store to enhance men’s shopping experiences. Among the hundreds that received the bottle as a gift and the ones that tried it in the store, many people actually placed orders for beer to take home, turning a unique promotional item into a sexy and successful new product. Not to mention creating a buzz around the store.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Seven of Diamonds by Christina Berglund</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44132" title="beer-design-seven" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-seven.jpg" width="468" height="425" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://christinaberglund.com/">christina berglund</a>)</h6>
<p>&#8220;Seven of Diamonds Brewery is based on the beer card tradition. As the tradition goes, when a player wins the last trick of the hand with this card, his opponent must buy him a beer. Four varieties correspond with the four card suits—hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Arrogant Bastard by Thahn Nguyen</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44133" title="beer-design-arrogant-bastard" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-arrogant-bastard.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://cargocollective.com/thanh">cargo collective</a>)</h6>
<p>California State University student Thanh Nguyen redesigned the packaging for Arrogant Bastard Beer. &#8220;This was one of the first projects for my packaging class this semester: we had to repackage a food or drink product. We could either completely rebrand the product or stick with their existing logo. I chose to give the Arrogant Bastard beers a facelift using their existing logo. &#8220;</p>
<h4>Firewater Brew by Brian Biles</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44134" title="beer-design-firewater" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-firewater.jpg" width="468" height="459" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.ohbeautifulbeer.com/2012/09/firewater-brew/">oh beautiful beer</a>)</h6>
<p>In this student project by Brian Biles, Firewater Beer gets a redesign that&#8217;s equal parts modern and nostalgic, with wood textures and rope detail that pay tribute to the brand&#8217;s hand-crafted reputation.</p>
<h4>Ippon Matsu by Kota Kobayashi</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44135" title="beer-design-ippon" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-ippon.jpg" width="468" height="532" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.ohbeautifulbeer.com/2012/11/ippon-matsu/">oh beautiful beer</a>)</h6>
<p>The designer says, &#8220;In the city of Rikuzentakata, a single pine tree stands as a testament to survival after the tsunami of 2011. This beer’s name means “One Pine Tree” and its design is a symbol of charity and hope for Japan’s brighter future. A scroll-like, handwritten label seals the top with its story written on the inside. The label is a solitary pine made of three triangles facing up, symbolizing the wish for progress in the reconstruction efforts.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Velkopopovicky Kozel by Yurko Gutsulyak</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44136" title="beer-design-velkopopovicky" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-velkopopovicky.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://gstudio.com.ua/">gstudio</a>)</h6>
<p>&#8220;&#8221;The project is aimed at emphasizing the values of the famous Czech brand and enlarging the number of its fans.<br />
The design of the limited edition reflects the ancient traditions as well as the mastership of the Czech brewers. Every can is a part of the Old Czechia. Beside the collectors’ design, the Velkopopovicky Kozel beer offers gifts to everyone who will unravel the special message that is encoded on the can.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Brew Dog Paradox</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44137" title="beer-design-paradox" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-paradox.jpg" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.johannabasford.com/">johanna basford</a>)</h6>
<p>Paradox, a limited edition beer by Brew Dog, gets silk-screen printed labels in luxe gold lacquer on black.</p>
<h4>Santa Sabina by Alacran Creative</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44138" title="beer-design-santa-sabina" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-santa-sabina.jpg" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<h6>(images via:  <a href="http://www.behance.net/alacrancreative">behance</a>)</h6>
<p>Alacran Creative&#8217;s label for Imperial Mezcal Ale by Mexican brewery Santa Sabina, a bitter ale with a pinch of Mezcal added in the last week of fermentation, features an illustration of the Guadalajara countryside. The bottle is also wrapped in brown printed paper.</p>
<h4>Upslope Brewing Foreign Style Stout Cans</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44139" title="beer-design-upslope" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-upslope.jpg" width="468" height="520" /></p>
<h6>(images via:<a href="http://www.anthembranding.com/"> anthem branding</a>)</h6>
<p>Anthem Branding says of the Upslope Foreign-Style Stout cans, &#8220;Ever since its premiere as Upslope Brewing’s First Anniversary beer, the Foreign Style Stout has been a fan favorite. The Foreign Style Stout is brewed with Pilsner malt, along with roasted barley, several specialty malts. We developed a unique can design to draw attention to the company’s first Limited Release variety. The all-black can is accentuated with a silver print.&#8221;</p>
<h4>No-Li Bottles by Riley Cran</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44140" title="beer-design-riley-cran" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-riley-cran.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via:<a href=" http://www.rileycran.com/work/?name=no_li"> riley cran</a>)</h6>
<p>Designer Riley Cran created this crisp, illustrated branding for No-Li, a brewing company in the Pacific Northwest.</p>
<h4>21st Amendment Fireside Chat by TBD</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44141" title="beer-design-fireside-chat" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-fireside-chat.jpg" width="468" height="441" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.tbdadvertising.com/">tbd advertising</a>)</h6>
<p>&#8220;Like FDR’s Depression-era radio addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Fireside Chat is our early winter seasonal brew available from October through December in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like a classic, warming Strong Ale but with a subtle blend of hand-selected spices for just the right festive flair.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Les Angles et Demons by Plastikkcomau</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44142" title="beer-design-les-angles" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-les-angles.jpg" width="468" height="352" /></p>

<h4>Cerveceria Hacienda by Andrew Rose</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-44143" title="beer-design-cerveceria-hacienda" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beer-design-cerveceria-hacienda.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.behance.net/gallery/Mexican-Beer-Label-Cerveceria-Hacienda/752302">behance</a>)</h6>
<p>Andrew Rose created labels for Mexico&#8217;s Cerveceria Hacienda brewing company that honor the country&#8217;s history and culture, including Catrina Red Ale, Hidalgo Stout and Jaguar Pale Ale.</p>

<p>&#8220;Freak Show is a brand of beer that uses circus characters to help describe different types of beer. The labels are designed in a wood-type poster style, characteristic of old circus posters.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;White Rabbit Brewing in the Yarra Valley, VIC, Australia opened its doors in mid-2009 with its flagship beer being the WR Dark Ale. The illustration features a playful white bunny rabbit jumping amongst the leafy landscape. The rabbit appears in a different position on each stubby label so that no two beer labels are the same.&#8221;</p>

<p>This concept is a collaboration between three graphic design students at Iceland Academy of the Arts. &#8220;This beer brand concept was born on a sunday night at school were we were supposed to make a brand for a micro-brewery. The name is traditional Icelandic name that could be loosely translated into &#8220;thirsty one&#8221;.</p>

<p>Would you expect packaging blog The Dieline&#8217;s top beer packaging design of the year to be created by one of the big brewers? Companies like Miller don&#8217;t generally compete well with smaller craft brewers when it comes to originality and aesthetics, but Miller definitely hit a high note with its boom box six-pack case.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-40176" title="bug out box emergency" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bug-out-box-emergency.jpg" width="468" height="410" /></p>
<p>Missing from most survival kits are the less-obvious but still-essential elements for preserving not just life and limb but sanity along with them. Hence the more diversified offerings of this lovely bug-out box, just in time for the much-misunderstood (and not actually) Mayan-predicted apocalypse.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-40175" title="bugout box kit contents" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bugout-box-kit-contents.jpg" width="468" height="800" /></p>
<p>Siesta dovetails with survival in this kit created by the Mexican branding firm <a href="http://menosunocerouno.com/" target="_blank">Menosunocerouno</a>. Seven pie-shaped slices of a circular chocolate give you a week&#8217;s worth of treats &#8211; rewards, perhaps, for staying alive. Then wash your dessert down with some original Mayan liqueur from Casa D’aristi in Yucatan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-40174" title="bugout knife matches kit" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bugout-knife-matches-kit.jpg" width="468" height="800" /></p>
<p>But aside from the fun stuff, there are some core materials as well: a liter of water to stay hydrated, a pack of matches, survival knife and waterproof notebook to document the good and the bad as you make your way through the world&#8217;s end. All of this is packaged in a suitably-austere black-and-yellow box with instructional tips should anything less obvious come your way during the end of days.</p>
