    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83454" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/survival-pod-swarm-hive-468x316.jpg" alt="survival pod swarm hive" width="468" height="316" /></p>
<p>Providing secure enclosures and other critical safety features in the face of tsunamis, floods and accidents at sea, this system of survival pods adds another critical dimension as well: connectivity. The award-winning <a href="http://www.red-dot-21.com/design/duckweed-survival-house/">Duckweed Survival House</a> units come with variable-length tethers and are individually designed to stay upright and keep their occupants sheltered in the harshest conditions.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83453" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/duckweed-pod-468x468.jpg" alt="duckweed pod" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Much like the series of independent-but-connectable space habitats proposed in Neal Stephenson&#8217;s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seveneves">Seveneves</a>, each individual unit is self-supporting but also benefits by networking with the rest. The rounded-square shape helps allow the different units to be organized in grids, lines or otherwise without sharp corners that could damage adjacent units.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83452" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/pod-survival-unit-468x331.jpg" alt="pod survival unit" width="468" height="331" /></p>
<p>Together, they provide increased stability, visibility, wave and wind resistance, but the units can be separated as well to avoid obstacles or for situations-specific emergency needs, like jettisoning a defective pod. As in the aforementioned work of science fiction, the idea is to maximize the odds for all survivors by creating options for configuration and collaboration.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83455" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/survival-pod-module-468x331.jpg" alt="survival pod module" width="468" height="331" /></p>
<p>A stem projecting beneath each unit stabilizes the crafts while a built-in, reverse osmosis filter turns salty water potable. Pressurized carbon dioxide gas provides quick inflatability while an operable overhead vent allows in fresh air. Bright markers aid in night rescue while also helping people in disparate pods spot one another more easily on the ocean waves.</p>

<p>If you are sick of worrying about your bike being stolen or taking a lock with you wherever you go, this design will solve both of those every problems faced by bicyclists around the world.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70458" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/unstealable-bicycle-in-action-468x353.jpg" alt="unstealable bicycle in action" width="468" height="353" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/1pWYu8t5o4o?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>In less than 20 seconds, the <a href="http://nadiemelaroba.cl/">Unstealable Bike</a>&#8216;s locking system can be deployed by unlatching and rotating two pieces of the frame, then sliding out and using the seat bar to connect and secure those two parts.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70461" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/unstealable-bike-leaning-bridge-468x353.jpg" alt="unstealable bike leaning bridge" width="468" height="353" /></p>
<p>Unlike most quick-release seats, the ability to slide out the bar becomes an asset rather than a liability in this case, making it possible to lock up your bicycle with one of its most frequently-stolen pieces.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70457" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/unstealable-cycle-prototype-design-468x353.jpg" alt="unstealable cycle prototype design" width="468" height="353" /></p>
<p>The scale of the components employed makes it easy to attach the cycle to anything from a slim signpost to a thick tree.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-70459" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/unstealable-bike-engineering-team-468x310.jpg" alt="unstealable bike engineering team" width="468" height="310" /></p>
<p>Created by a team of three engineers, the bike is currently a prototype and seeking funding for mass-production and sale. Its builders bill it as safe, well-designed and comfortable &#8211; a more useful variant of the frequently-seen projects for collapsible bicycles.</p>

<p><!--wsa:gooold-->It&#8217;s a jaw-dropping hideout worthy of a James Bond villain – so some may find it appropriate that Pionen White Mountain in Sweden is indeed connected to WikiLeaks, international whistle-blowing organization and current foe-du-jour of the U.S. government. Though it seems that this former Cold War bunker located nearly 100 feet below the granite rocks of Stockholm&#8217;s Vita Berg Park is <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/95432/architecture-of-wikileaks/ ">not exactly WikiLeaks headquarters</a>, it does host two WikiLeaks servers, and its combination of modern steel and primitive caves is undeniably fascinating in its own right.<br />
<span id="more-25819"></span><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25821" title="wikileaks-architecture-2" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/wikileaks-architecture-2.jpg" width="468" height="342" /></p>
<p>Pionen White Mountain was originally created as a World War II bomb shelter and was converted into a civil defense center in the 1970s to house an emergency unit of the Swedish government in case of nuclear war. In 2008, Albert France-Lanord Architects updated it into a state-of-the-art data center for Banhof, a Swedish internet hosting company. Bahhof <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5626381/this-is-the-nuclear-bunker-where-wikileaks-will-be-located ">expanded the space</a> to accommodate gas oil power generators that keep the servers running in the event of a power outage.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25822" title="wikileaks-architecture-3" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/wikileaks-architecture-3.jpg" width="468" height="513" /></p>
<p>Science fiction was naturally a major inspiration for the design, Banhof CEO Jon Karlung told <a href="http://royal.pingdom.com/2008/11/14/the-worlds-most-super-designed-data-center-fit-for-a-james-bond-villain/ ">Pingdom</a>. Old sci-fi movies like Logan&#8217;s Run, Silent Running and Star Wars all contributed visual clues as did – of course – James Bond.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25823" title="wikileaks-architecture-4" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/wikileaks-architecture-4.jpg" width="468" height="342" /></p>
<p>“Since we got hold of this unique nuclear bunker in central Stockholm deep below the rock, we just couldn’t build it like a traditional – more boring – hosting center,” he said. “We wanted to make something different. The place itself needed something far out in design and science fiction was the natural source of inspiration in this case – plus of course some solid experience from having been a hosting provider for more than a decade.”</p>
