<p>The former Bata shoe factory in &#8220;Batawa&#8221; – a company town located in <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/02/05/power-houses-toronto-hydros-camouflaged-substations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">southern Ontario</a> – forged fine <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/07/15/art-sole-ospop-channels-maos-china-to-sell-shoes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">footwear</a> for footloose Canucks from 1939 to the year 2000.</p>
<h4>Kickoff</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118902" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/bata-shoe-factory-1b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The Bata Shoe Company was founded in 1894 in Zlin, Austria-Hungary, by Tomas Bata and his two siblings. By 1932 the company had grown to become “shoemaker to the world”, boasting 16,560 employees, 1,645 stores, and 25 other non-footwear enterprises. That same year, an aircraft crash took the life of Tomas Bata, leaving the company&#8217;s fate and fortunes to his brother Jan Antonin and his son, Thomas John Bata.</p>
<h4>Czech Your Privilege</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118903" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/bata-shoe-factory-2-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p>The new generation of ownership continued to apply Tomas Bata&#8217;s proven business plans by expanding the firm&#8217;s footprint both in Europe and around the world. One of the company&#8217;s most innovative practices was the establishment of local “Bata-villes”. These vertically-integrated company towns had their own schools, grocery stores, and subsidized employee housing, all owned and operated by The Bata Shoe Company.</p>
<h4>”A Place to Grow”</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118908" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/bata-shoe-factory-8-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>In 1939, with the clouds of war massing on the horizon, the firm built <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batawa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Batawa</a> – a company-owned planned village situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario in what is now the city of Quinte West, Canada. Bata chose the location purely for economic reasons: it was close to navigable waterways, a railway, a highway, and an airport.</p>
<h4>Sole Purpose</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118910" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/bata-shoe-factory-4-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>As was the case with other Batavilles, Batawa&#8217;s heart and “sole” was the shoe production factory. The state of the art (for 1939) five-story-tall facility dominated the peaceful southeastern Ontario countryside while enabling the firm to dominate the Canadian market for affordable footwear.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111174" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/meta-sneaker-644x338.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="338" /></p>
<p>These new <em><a href="https://weburbanist.com/2018/02/05/bloat-couture-11-high-fashion-designs-that-look-like-actual-garbage/">Shoes for Shoes</a> </em>combine sandals, galoshes, and, well, shoes, to create a hybrid fashion phenomenon making its way from the runways of Men&#8217;s Fashion Week in Paris to a store near you. Apparently, they heard you like shoes, so they designed some shoes for your shoes so you can put shoes on your shoes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111173" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/shoes-for-shoes-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re transformable sneakers that have an outer layer of protective sandal that you can enter Velcro into and you can strap them on or off,&#8221; says the company Sankuanz on behalf of designer Shangguan Zhe.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111172" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/slip-on-sneaker-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>This Chinese fashion layer boasts the ability to protect expensive footwear at a price of $355, which sounds like a lot, until you consider that some pairs of sneakers can cost tens of thousands (or more).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111171" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/fashion-forward-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>&#8220;You can walk totally normal in them and it gives you an extra layer of protection and then also height,&#8221; boasts the company. There are certainly precedents for footwear that goes on over other footwear, but whether these can weather the test of time (and retail markets) remains to be seen.</p>

<p>There are many theories, but no one is quite sure where the practice of throwing shoes over raised urban infrastructure started. Some suggest bullies take shoes from other kids and toss them over power and telephone lines; other think it could be a way of marking gang or drug-dealing territories. Or perhaps people just make and lose bad bets, paying the price with sore feet.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93993" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/shoe-on-wire-art-644x427.jpg" alt="shoe on wire art" width="644" height="427" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93987" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/laced-shoe-downside-up-644x429.jpg" alt="laced shoe downside up" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Whatever the reason, London street artist <a href="http://www.pejac.es/" target="_blank">Pejac</a> (images by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reverblondon/" target="_blank">Gary Van Handley</a>) has taken the shoe-on-a-wire concept to the next level, with individual and paired shoes seeming to hang upside-down, pulled inexplicably toward the sky. Presumably to minimize annoyance to the city (and possible damage to critical lines), the artist in this case opted to use poles rather than wires for support.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93991" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/gravity-shoe-art-installation-644x429.jpg" alt="gravity shoe art installation" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93990" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/gravity-suspended-shoes-644x966.jpg" alt="gravity suspended shoes" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p>Titled Downside Up, this series of shoe art installations across East London are in part a series of street artworks but also a viral marketing campaign for an upcoming solo exhibit. Pejac is well known for both <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/07/17/painted-praise-street-art-honors-asia-with-iconic-imagery/">silly and thought-provoking interventions</a>, often manipulating built environments in subtle ways by pealing paint or through small installations easily missed by less observant passersby.</p>

<p>A Japanese designer and Italian shoemaker have taken a fresh approach to athletic footwear, adapting the minimalist art of cloth wrapping to form the basis of a flexible shoe that fits any foot shape.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92970" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/wrapping-shoes-japanese-design-644x433.jpg" alt="wrapping shoes japanese design" width="644" height="433" /></p>
<p>Masaya Hashimoto worked with <a href="http://us.vibram.com/shop/furoshiki/">Vibram</a>, the makers of foot-shaped FiveFingers shoes (with articulated toes), to create the Furoshiki series of shoes with wrapping soles that fold around feet without needing laces (a simple hook and and loop system).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92969" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/lace-free-sport-shoes-644x362.jpg" alt="lace free sport shoes" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>A specially-engineered gripping system keeps the shoes in place and make it possible for the shoe to perform like ordinary footwear but with less weight and material.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92972" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/foot-wrapping-athletci-shoes-644x433.jpg" alt="foot wrapping athletci shoes" width="644" height="433" /></p>
<p>The system has a number of advantages, including more flexible sizing than traditional shoes, easier packing for travel and the ability to skip socks comfortably.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92971" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/wrapping-black-sole-shoes-644x433.jpg" alt="wrapping black sole shoes" width="644" height="433" /></p>
<p>From Vibram: &#8220;The concept for this type of footwear was derived from the Japanese custom of packaging items by wrapping them in cloth fabric. Furoshiki is the only sole on the market that wraps around the entire foot. Because the upper is constructed with stretch fabric, it will anatomically fit nicely on any foot type and the hook and loop closure system allows for a quick, easy fit.&#8221;</p>

<p>Rem Koolhaas invited architects Zaha Hadid, Ben van Berkel and Fernando Romero as well as designers Ross Lovegrove and Michael Young to participate in creating these pairs, each requiring around a day to print on a sPro 60 selective laser sintering (SLS) machine made by <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/tag/3d-systems/">3D Systems</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78505" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/hoof-like-3d-shoe-468x334.jpg" alt="hoof like 3d shoe" width="468" height="334" /></p>

<p>All shown above, Flames by Zaha Hadid features pointy protrusions casting stellar silhouettes, UNX2 by Ben van Berkel looks almost like a hoof and Ilabo by Ross Lovegrove features open heals and toes. Below, the Young Shoe by Michael Young provides comfortable support on all sides, looking much more awkward, reportedly, than it actually feels when in use and Ammonite by Fernando Romero is abstractly patterned off of the spirals of sea creatures.</p>

<p>More on the process and materials from <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2015/04/13/united-nude-3d-printed-shoes-zaha-hadid-ben-van-berkel-michael-young-milan-2015/">Dezeen</a>: &#8220;The process starts with a container filled with powder, which is heated in places, as specified by a digital file. This fuses the material together layer by layer until the final form is built up. Once complete, the excess powder is broken away to reveal the design. Each pair was created using two different materials: the soles were printed in hard nylon, while the uppers were formed from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which is softer and more flexible.&#8221;</p>
