    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109538" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/bathtub-gin-nyc-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The bodega on the corner, your laundromat, the pawn shop down the street or the innocuous law firm entrance you pass on your way to work could be harboring secrets behind unmarked doors or bookcases. America&#8217;s modern speakeasies exist more for the thrill of discovery than hiding illicit activities, but you have to admit, it&#8217;s pretty fun to walk into a hot dog joint, enter a phone booth, pick up the phone and dial a number to gain access to an exclusive bar. All of these businesses hide behind unassuming facades, only to be found by people who are &#8216;in the know.&#8217;</p>
<h4>PDT (Please Don’t Tell), New York City</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109554" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/please-dont-tell-new-york-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-109553" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/please-dont-tell-new-york-2.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="480" /></p>
<p>The novelty of an old-fashioned phone booth in a New York City hot dog joint is just the beginning of this strange and intriguing adventure known as ‘PDT’ (<a href="http://pdtnyc.com/">Please Don’t Tell.</a>) If you enter the phone booth, pick up the phone and dial a certain number as directed by a small sign hung on the wall, you’ll be buzzed into a secret bar through the back wall of the booth. The bar has a classic laid-back speakeasy style complete with leather booths and taxidermy.</p>
<h4>Community 54: Clothing Store Accessed Through a Photo Booth</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109560" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/community-54-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109559" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/community-54-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109558" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/community-54-3-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>There’s nothing particularly exclusive about the men’s streetwear store hidden in the back room of an arcade, but maybe the secrecy of its location makes it feel a little cooler than it really is. To access <a href="http://www.boweryboogie.com/">Community 54,</a> you step through the fully-functional photo booth at the back of the arcade.</p>
<h4>The Franklin Mortgage &amp; Investment Company, Philadelphia</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109536" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/franklyn-mortgage-644x428.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109535" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/franklin-mortgage-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>This is a real, actual speakeasy founded in the 1920s by legendary Philadelphia gangster Max ‘Boo Boo’ Hoff. Behind the front of the <a href="http://www.thefranklinbar.com/">Franklin Mortgage &amp; Investment Company</a> was the country’s largest alcohol running ring during prohibition, more active than Al Capone’s operation. The end of prohibition clearly didn’t impact this speakeasy’s success, and you still enter through a nondescript mortgage company’s business front.</p>
<h4>The Raines Law Room, New York City</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109552" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/raines-law-room-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109551" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/raines-law-room-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Another seemingly buttoned-up professional facade, the entrance to <a href="https://www.raineslawroom.com/">Raines Law Room</a> in New York City betrays absolutely nothing of the <a href="http://sideways.nyc/2013/01/raines-law-room/">speakeasy behind its door</a>. Though, one thing that might make a passerby suspicious is the fact that on busy nights, there might be a line out the door to what is ostensibly a law firm’s office. To experience the thrill of the ‘secret’ entrance, make reservations online Sunday through Tuesday, when there will be fewer people around.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75445" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-468x468.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;d never guess that there&#8217;s anything amiss at &#8216;The Press,&#8217; a sandwich bar in Shanghai, unless you actually witnessed the surreal sight of someone pulling a lever on a vintage Coca-Cola machine and disappearing into it. The soda machine acts as a secret entrance to &#8216;The Flask,&#8217; a contemporary lounge that forms a stark contrast to the brightly-lit sandwich shop.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75443" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-3-468x468.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy 3" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75442" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-4-468x234.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy 4" width="468" height="234" /></p>
<p>Collectively known as The Flash and the Press, this hidden speakeasy by <a href="http://www.albertocaiola.com/">Alberto Caiola</a> may not be the only such concept in town, but with the Coke machine and unexpected visuals, it adds another layer to the experience of accessing an exclusive-feeling &#8216;secret&#8217; space.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75444" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-2-468x468.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy 2" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75440" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-6-468x468.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy 6" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75439" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/hidden-speakeasy-7-468x468.jpg" alt="hidden speakeasy 7" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Once you open the door to that machine, the fun, bright, upbeat environment of the diner melts away and you&#8217;re enveloped by a dark, angular elegance marrying traditional speakeasy details like oversized glass liquor bottles with modern aesthetics. The bar is dimly-lit and eclectically furnished to recreate the subversive, fly-by-night feel of the originals.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75447" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/secret-speakeasy-2-468x311.jpg" alt="secret speakeasy 2" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Another hidden speakeasy, this one in New York, requires a bit more of visitors in order to gain access &#8211; you have to meander up a winding path through a deserted building to reach what seems like an industrial wasteland. <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/06/20/secret-skeakeasy-abandoned-water-tower-nightclub-in-nyc/">&#8216;The Night Heron&#8217; was held illegally inside a water tower on top of a vacant building in Chelsea.<br />

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72973" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/water-tower-night-club-468x312.jpg" alt="water tower night club" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>New York has a long history of hidden and illicit venues &#8211; one that did not stop when prohibition was lifted. There is the innocuous pizza shop where dialing the right number in their phone booth lets you through a secret door into the pub. Or the various hole-in-the-wall places where you add your number to a wait list and hope for a call.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-51018" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/secret-water-tower-bar.jpg" alt="secret water tower bar" width="468" height="309" /></p>
<p>And then this, the now-defunct bar inside an abandoned water tower in Chelsea, requiring one to following a winding path up through a deserted building to find a surprise at the top.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/secret-speakeasy-new-york.jpg" alt="secret speakeasy new york" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>Per the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2013/05/22/nyregion/20130522_SPEAKEASY.html?_r=0#">New York Times</a> (images by<a href="http://www.benjaminnorman.com/"> Benjamin Norman</a>), <em>&#8220;The Night Heron was an invitation-only nightclub held illegally in a water tower atop a vacant building in Chelsea.&#8221;</em> Guests had to make their way through a deserted building, then climb up a ladder to reach their destination.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/secret-hidden-room-bar.jpg" alt="secret hidden room bar" width="468" height="768" /></p>
<p>All-nighters were common for this bustling little sweet spot, with last guests being let in as late as three in the morning. Live music reverberated within the wooden slats of the tightly-packed circular interior, with bottles of whisky reinforcing the retro (albeit a bit hipster) vibe of the whole affair. Alas, all good things must come to an end &#8211; particularly when they are a little less than legal in the first place.</p>
