<p>Set to be demolished in June to make way for an apartment building,THE HAUS in Berlin is a formerly abandoned 5-story building filled with site-specific works by 165 street artists. Dreamed up by artists Kimo, Bolle and Jörni of <a href="http://www.xi-design.com/dixons-graffiti.html">Die Dixons collective</a>, THE HAUS was once a bank on avenue Kurfürstendamm, but fell into disuse over the years. The artists activated their network of creative contacts to temporarily turn it into a street art free-for-all that’s so popular with visitors, there’s often a two-hour wait outside.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103175" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-12-644x439.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="439" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103177" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-10-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The artists, who range from Berlin locals to international activists, worked almost nonstop from mid-January through March 9th to complete the project, and installations include geometric patterns made of tape, video projections, interactive exhibits and sculpture.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103181" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/house-berlin-6-644x413.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="413" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103182" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-5-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103183" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-4-644x459.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="459" /></p>
<p>The exhibit opened April 1st, and guided tours run almost all day long on Tuesdays through Sundays with a donation-based, pay-what-you-can system and a ‘no phones’ rule. “Look through your eyes and not through the screen of your phone,” the website urges. You can see each individual installation on <a href="http://www.thehaus.de/home--thehaus.html#home">THE HAUS website</a>, and learn more about the artists who created them.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103185" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-2-644x450.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="450" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103184" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-3-644x312.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103176" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-11-644x417.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="417" /></p>
<p>Even beyond the art itself, the project is definitely a community effort. Nearly all of the supplies were donated by supportive businesses, and a four-star hotel even put up all the artists free of charge. Berliner Pilsner donated beer. In an interview with<a href="https://creators.vice.com/en_us/article/165-street-artists-abandoned-building-berlin?utm_source=tcpfbus"> Vice’s The Creators Project</a>, Kimo stresses that THE HAUS is “not a marketing joke,” noting that nothing was for sale.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103180" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-7-644x428.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103179" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/haus-berlin-8-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>“Feel the freshest urban art gallery ever with a guided tour!” says the site. “108 dope artworks are waiting to be seen, to be experienced and to be memorized by you. Every single piece is created by one of the 165 artists from Berlin and all over the world. But be aware that THE HAUS is created to be destroyed &#8211; in the end of May the gallery is going to close and the wrecking ball will follow.”</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide960 wp-image-92601" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-1-960x400.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 1" width="960" height="400" /></p>
<p>Gazing down at foamy-looking swirls of white on black from a niche in an ancient castle, you almost feel as if you&#8217;re an astronaut watching a hurricane form above the ocean on the distant Earth. These cellular arrangements form tentacular appendages of varying opacity, meeting in the center to create a vortex effect. They are, in fact, made of salt, with each grain symbolizing a memory or a moment in time. Artist Motoi Yamamoto installed &#8216;Floating Garden&#8217; and &#8216;Labyrinth&#8217;  within the castle tower at Aigues-Mortes in Southern France for an exhibition called &#8216;<a href="https://www.monuments-nationaux.fr/Actualites/Univers-sel-des-salines-royales-aux-salins-du-Midi">Univers&#8217; Sel,&#8217; </a>on display through the end of November.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92600" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-2-644x964.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 2" width="644" height="964" /></p>
<p>The hurricane-like swirl of &#8216;Floating Garden&#8217; is a motif commonly used to represent life, death, resurrection and rebirth in East Asia. To create it, Yamamoto started in the center of the black-floored space, shaking a container of salt in a calculated rhythm to produce just the right pattern, working for 45 hours over 5 days.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92599" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-3-644x964.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 3" width="644" height="964" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92598" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-4-644x430.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 4" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Within the ramparts, a labyrinth unfolds. Would you be able to wind your way from the outer edges of the pattern to the piles of salt that lie at the end? You&#8217;ll never find out, because to attempt it would mean destroying the work, with its intricately placed salt lines sensitive to the slightest movement. Like the sand mandalas of Tibetan monks, these salt sculptures are meant to exist temporarily, as vulnerable and ephemeral as human bodies moving through the hazardous world.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92596" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-6-644x964.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 6" width="644" height="964" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92595" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-7-644x430.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 7" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92594" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-8-644x964.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 8" width="644" height="964" /></p>
<p>Both pieces are <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/05/14/salt-sculptures-12-stunning-artworks-by-motoi-yamamoto/">a continuation of series of the same names</a>. The artist began working with salt as a medium after the loss of his sister to brain cancer at 24 years old, in rumination on time, transcendence and the notion of death. The salt structures act as an interstitial medium between our time and space within our physical world and whatever mysteries lie beyond.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-92597" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/salt-labyrinth-5-644x430.jpg" alt="salt labyrinth 5" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Drawing a labyrinth with salt is like following a trace of my memory,&#8221; says Yamamoto. &#8220;Memories seem to change and vanish as time goes by. However, what I seek is the way in which I can touch a precious moment in my memories that cannot be attained through pictures or writings. I always silently follow the trace, that is controlled as well as uncontrolled from the start point after I have completed it.&#8221;</p>

<p>The clown you hired for your kid’s birthday party probably can’t make balloon iguanas with tiny scales, swirling three-story inflatable sculptures inspired by mythology, or floating illuminated installations that blink along with the music. These blown-up works of art go way beyond standard balloon animals, elevating an iconic decorative element at parties to a respectable medium for sculptures of all sizes.</p>
<h4>Amazingly Realistic Balloon Animals by Masayoshi Matsumoto</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84173" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-balloon-animals-1-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable art balloon animals 1" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84174" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-balloon-animals-2-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable art balloon animals 2" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84175" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-balloon-animals-3-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable art balloon animals 3" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84176" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-balloon-animals-4-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable art balloon animals 4" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Our expectations of balloon animals will never be the same after seeing these incredibly detailed creations by <a href="http://isopresso.tumblr.com">Masayoshi Matsumoto</a>. The artist uses nothing but balloons and transparent thread to replicate scales, toenails, whiskers, gills and other small parts of all sorts of creatures.</p>
<h4>Three-Story Balloon Sculpture by Jason Hackenwerth</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84203" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-three-story-sculpture-468x702.jpg" alt="inflatable art three story sculpture" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84204" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-three-story-sculpture-2-468x702.jpg" alt="inflatable art three story sculpture 2" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>A swirling, organic form seemed to grow overnight in the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland following the installation of ‘Pisces’ by <a href="http://www.jasonhackenwerth.com">Jason Hackenwerth</a>. Made of 10,000 individual balloons that took three people nearly six days to inflate, the sculpture references the Greek legend of Aphrodite and Eros, in which they escaped the monster Typhon by transforming into a spiral of two fish.</p>
<h4>Balloons Bursting at High Speed by James Huse</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84198" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-high-speed-468x702.jpg" alt="inflatable art high speed" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84199" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-high-speed-2-468x690.jpg" alt="inflatable art high speed 2" width="468" height="690" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84200" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-high-speed-3-468x690.jpg" alt="inflatable art high speed 3" width="468" height="690" /></p>
<p>Balloons filled with milk are captured mid-rupture at high speeds by designer James Huse in a photo series entitled ‘<a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2011/07/an-abrupt-end-explosive-high-speed-photos-by-james-huse/">An Abrupt End.</a>’ It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on here, with all of those textures swirling and splashing, but it’s fascinating to look at.</p>
<h4>Fruloons &amp; Vegaloons by Vanessa McKeown</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84190" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-fruit-1-468x351.jpg" alt="inflatable art fruit 1" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84191" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-fruit-2-468x334.jpg" alt="inflatable art fruit 2" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84192" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-fruit-3-468x389.jpg" alt="inflatable art fruit 3" width="468" height="389" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84193" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/inflatable-art-fruit-4-468x360.jpg" alt="inflatable art fruit 4" width="468" height="360" /></p>
<p>Artist <a href="http://www.designboom.com/art/vanessa-mckeown-fruits-vegetables-balloons-fruloons-vegaloons-09-16-2015/">Vanessa McKeown</a> makes use of cast-off materials and items that can be found around the house, proving that ultimately, the most important aspect of creativity is the ability to stretch your imagination. In this series, ‘Fruloons &amp; Vegaloons,’ she carefully attaches balloons in the appropriate colors to real fruit and vegetable stems, and inserts an orange one in the perfect size inside a peel.</p>

<p class="p1">OakOak wanders the streets seeing creative possibilities in virtually every quirk and imperfection, turning what could be seen by others as urban blight into playful works of art that might only stick around for a day or so, but still manage to brighten people&#8217;s day.</p>

I saw shapes everywhere, and wanted to realize them.&#8221;</p>

<p>Romanian photographer <a href="http://dancretu.tumblr.com/">Dan Cretu</a> loves to play with his food. His series of food-themed photographs takes everyday foods and turns them into something that looks far more permanent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63311" alt="food photography dan cretu" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/food-photography-dan-cretu.jpg" width="468" height="326" /></p>
<p>Cretu takes normal pieces of food, then cuts and bends and twists them into shapes that make up objects we see and use every day. The exceptional food sculptures are created without the use of Photoshop or other digital manipulation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63313" alt="regular objects made of food" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/regular-objects-made-of-food.jpg" width="468" height="451" /></p>
<p>What Cretu does require, however, is speed. All of his sculptures have to be constructed and photographed within a few hours before the food begins to get squishy and unattractive.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63314" alt="photography with food" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/photography-with-food.jpg" width="468" height="500" /></p>
<p>One of the more interesting aspects of Cretu&#8217;s series is the juxtaposition of the very temporary pieces of food and the far more permanent objects they become in the photographer&#8217;s hands. Cut oranges which right now look just like bicycle wheels will, very shortly after the photograph, look like withered piles of decaying fruit.</p>
