    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112576" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/rugged-coffee-maker-644x569.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="569" /></p>
<p>Made by power tool-maker Makita, this is the ultimate coffee machine to energize construction workers, charged by the same batteries already in use on work sites. The CM501D is designed to derive energy from plug-in, rechargeable, lithium-ion power sources that drive cordless screws, drills, saws and other standard equipment.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112574" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/tool-set-644x420.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="420" /></p>
<p>For those unfamiliar with them: these swappable systems (used by various companies) add simplicity and redundancy, allowing different tools to work off share batteries, so some can be recharged while others are in use.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112573" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/swappable-batteries-644x218.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="218" /></p>
<p>The Japanese company behind this unusual battery usage boasts the mobility of the device, which can be brought to work sites that are not yet plugged into the grid. It can make about a half-dozen cups on a single 18V battery charge, from modular coffee packs or ground coffee It is convenient, requiring no paper filter (grounds can be poured straight in), compact, versatile and fast.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112577" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/earlier-model-644x318.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="318" /></p>
<p>Makita’s first coffee maker went on sale in 2015, but the design was more conventional &#8212; it was less robust and compact (featuring a cord that batteries could be plugged into). The new model is made to me sturdier and safer, an all-in-one machine without any lines to trip over.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112575" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/rugged-design-644x591.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="591" /></p>
<p>As a general strategy, this powering system opens the door to other similar ideas, too &#8212; anything needing electricity on a building site could be adapted to function in a similar way. Meanwhile, other toolmakers (like DeWalt, Ryobi, Bosch and Dremel) could learn a lesson or two from this manufacturer.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98357" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trickshot-644x644.gif" alt="trickshot" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>Architectural drawings have long used geometrical tricks to convey scale, depth, distance and other three-dimensional aspects of realities on two-dimensional surfaces. In a two-vanishing-point drawing, the artist aligns their ruler with a point on one side or the other and draws a line along the edge (or employs another modular straight-edging tool).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-98355" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/drawing-hack.gif" alt="drawing-hack" width="600" height="600" /></p>
<p>The same came be accomplished much more quickly, however, using this simple technique: pin a flexible string to both points along the horizon line and slide a hook along the center. The results will naturally be a bit less than precisely linear, but for many architectural artists a wavy line is typical or even desired (it gives the piece a less rigorously complete look).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98352" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/four-point-perspective-644x483.jpg" alt="four-point-perspective" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Of course, it will only work for a traditional two-point perspective &#8211; in cases where the artist wants to include a third vanishing point (for instance, to emphasize verticals in looking up at a skyscraper or create a fish-eye effect) a straight-edge is still required. That, or a free-handed approach based on a picture, presumably the basis of the drawing above.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-98278" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/kitchenmultitool.gif" alt="kitchenmultitool" width="640" height="400" /></p>
<p>The key to the device is its flexibility, and not just in terms of measuring. Its creators claim it can flex up to 100,000 times without breaking thanks to TPR-based hinges.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98275" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/four-configurations-644x253.jpg" alt="four-configurations" width="644" height="253" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98273" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/spreading-stuff-644x446.jpg" alt="spreading-stuff" width="644" height="446" /></p>
<p>Each tool (a teaspoon and tablespoon variant) has four different measuring configurations and can also be used to spread things in its flat formation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98277" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/kitchen-tool-powder-644x430.jpg" alt="kitchen-tool-powder" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>The creators claim it works equally well with runny and viscous liquids as well as powders, then wash easily to avoid stains and smells.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98276" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/kitchen-measuring-device-644x483.jpg" alt="kitchen-measuring-device" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/XNmo3qZVaT8?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>If the material science side of the project holds it could have a lot more applications as well for everyday-use objects that need to bend without extraneous hinging mechanisms (which add bulk to a product as well as a point of failure and cracks for dirt and debris).</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98511" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3dsketched-644x383.gif" alt="3dsketched" width="644" height="383" /></p>
<p>Programs like Sketchup have allowed amateur artists and architects to sculpt and design in three dimensions for years, but this app facilitates far more informal works that really look like sketches in 3D.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.mentalcanvas.com/">Mental Canvas</a> is part of a suite of software for Microsoft Surface that takes more conventional sketched forms and allows users to navigate and expand them in three-dimensional space, retaining the character of rough drawings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-98509" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3d-drawing-tool.gif" alt="3d-drawing-tool" width="640" height="377" /></p>
<p>The infinite-depth approach of this digital canvas software lets users zoom in and rotate their view, adding layers along the way and inspecting their work from various angles. The effect is remarkable as these illustrations show.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-98510" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/drawing-tool-app.gif" alt="drawing-tool-app" width="640" height="360" /></p>
<p>From its creators: CAD modelling &#8220;comes at a cost. The cost is that one, you have to have a fully resolved three-dimensional model, even if it’s just a cube; second it’s very hard to edit a CAD model, it’s not fast and fluid like a sketch. At any given moment when you’re sketching, the designer or artist has full control over everything in that representation, but with a CAD model, that’s defined by the computer.&#8221;</p>
<p>This clever approach liberates an artist from the ordinary constraints of a physical page or even a drawing tablet, letting them shape worlds that maintain the character of a sketch but can be used to tell and frame stories in new ways.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98512" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/3ddrawing-644x376.gif" alt="3ddrawing" width="644" height="376" /></p>
<p>As with programs like Sketchup, a bookmarking tool allows users to save and store various views then retrace their steps, creating potential for 3D storytelling. It also lets a user pick the perfect shot, navigating three-dimensional space to select an ideal perspective. A dynamic dial tool, meanwhile, lets the artist rotate between colors and line qualities without backing out of the drawing.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/WMklcdzcNcU?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>As any good architect knows, an unfinished-looking drawing can be an asset: &#8220;A sketch has a quality when it’s unfinished; there’s so much possibility, there’s so much room for interpretation, and [Mental Canvas] expands the idea of a sketch. It makes it less flat. In architecture you always want that “Wow” design that gets everyone excited in the room, and [Mental Canvas] enhances it.&#8221;</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/53KJerdHkdA?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>One can see a lot of similarities here between Mental Canvas and tools being developed for <a href="https://www.dezeen.com/2016/05/09/google-tilt-brush-app-htc-vive-virtual-reality-painting-sketching-walk-through/">augmented and virtual reality platforms</a>. In a way, this program closes the gap, allowing users with more ordinary tools, devices and interfaces to accomplish something wonderful in 3D space.</p>

<p>Most of the tools we use have looked the same for decades, if not centuries, but that doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;re optimized to be as useful, convenient and durable as they can be. These clever tweaks on conventional tool designs can be incredibly simple, like adding a ledge to scissor handles for cutting straight lines, or unexpectedly innovative, like an illuminated glove that makes it easy to light whatever you&#8217;re working on while freeing up your hand.</p>
<h4>Locking Aperture Wrench</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82673" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/tools-aperture-wrech-468x619.jpg" alt="tools aperture wrech" width="468" height="619" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.industrialdesignserved.com/gallery/Aperture-Wrench/27162073">aperture wrench</a> eliminates the storage issues and guesswork associated with having an entire set of wrenches, with an aperture based on that of a camera lens. The metal blades of the aperture close around any given nut and automatically lock into place for perfect custom sizing and a secure fit.</p>
<h4>Hoyo Drill</h4>
<h4><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82680" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/tools-hoyo-2-468x303.png" alt="tools hoyo 2" width="468" height="303" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82679" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/tools-hoyo-1-468x303.png" alt="tools hoyo 1" width="468" height="303" /></h4>
<p>“You could almost keep your drill on the dinner table,” says the designer about the looks of the<a href="http://www.industrialdesignserved.com/gallery/HOYO-drill/21573095"> Hoyo</a>, a sleek black-and-white power drill.
