<p>Sleep sixteen feet below the surface of the ocean at the new <a href="https://www.conradmaldives.com/stay/the-muraka/">Conrad Muraka villa</a> in the Maldives, nestled into bed with panoramic views of marine creatures to color your dreams. Officially the world’s first underwater hotel residence, the two-story Muraka villa is now open for booking at the same Rangali Island resort hosting the world’s first underwater restaurant, the five-star Ithaa. Of course, there is a catch, and it’s not the hyper-fresh seafood brought in each day for guests to enjoy. The suite is only accessible via a four-night $200,000 package.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-12-at-9.55.58-AM.png" alt="" width="887" height="577" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117395" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Ithaa-Undersea-Hotel-Villa-Rangali-Maldives-2.jpg" alt="" width="880" height="800" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117391" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-12-at-9.56.35-AM.png" alt="" width="891" height="579" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117393" /></p>
<p>Connected to the rest of the resort by jetty, the Muraka features not only an underwater bedroom and bathroom but also a private gym, bar, infinity pool, an ocean-facing bathtub, a relaxation deck, additional above-water bedrooms and butler’s quarters. The price tag includes three meals a day prepared by a personal chef on the premises, and use of a private boat. It takes its name from the word “coral” in the local Dhivehi language, and cost a reported $15 million to build.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-12-at-9.52.28-AM.png" alt="" width="1036" height="685" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117398" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Conrad-Maldives-Ithaa-Restaurant.jpg" alt="" width="1000" height="562" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117390" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/VuzqHBQf7js?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>All of its components, including the 600-ton ultra-fortified lower level, were built in Singapore and transported to the site to avoid damaging the delicate ecosystem (which is, by the way, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/islands-sea-level-rise-flooding-uninhabitable-climate-change-maldives-seychelles-hawaii-a8321876.html">severely threatened by the effects of climate change</a>, to say the least.) A Conrad Resorts video gives us a peek into the process of building and assembling the villa, which sleeps nine guests in total.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-12-at-9.54.06-AM.png" alt="" width="984" height="604" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117396" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-12-at-9.56.09-AM.png" alt="" width="892" height="509" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-117394" /></p>
<p>With four different itineraries tailored to traveler’s preferences, including “The Wanderers” for those seeking local culture, “The Flavors” for culinary delights, “The Soul” for wellness and “The Thrill” for adventure, the Muraka is a fantasy getaway for billionaires and celebrities, as visually dazzling as it is bittersweet, especially since the Maldives’ famous coral reefs <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2125198-on-front-line-of-climate-change-as-maldives-fights-rising-seas/">are steadily degrading</a>.</p>

<p>Watch eerily illuminated sea creatures swim past your windows at night as you fall asleep on your own &#8216;private floating island,&#8217; <a href="http://www.themantaresort.com/packages/underwater-room/">an underwater hotel room at the Manta Resort</a> (photography by <a href="http://anhede.se">Jesper Anhede</a>). This special getaway is a two-story floating wooden structure with a submerged bedroom, a surface-level deck that lets you dive into the sea, and a rooftop lounge area.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62127" alt="Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Underwater-Hotel-Room-Manta-Resort-2.jpg" width="468" height="448" /></p>

<p>Located off the eastern coast of Africa near Pemba Island, the artificial floating island has virtually everything you&#8217;d want from a resort &#8211; as long as you&#8217;re okay with near-total seclusion. That means no other guests, but also no waiters or other attendees. You might be okay with that, given the scenery &#8211; but no worries, you can always take a boat back to the main resort to enjoy the restaurant and spa.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62125" alt="Underwater Hotel Room Manta Resort 4" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Underwater-Hotel-Room-Manta-Resort-4.jpg" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Designed by Swedish firm Genberg Underwater Hotels, the three-story structure is envisioned as a private getaway for a couple. It&#8217;s anchored to the sea floor from its four corners so it won&#8217;t float away, bobbing gently on the sea. Guests can enjoy views of all sorts of marine life, and coral reefs. After dark they&#8217;re still visible thanks to underwater spotlights beneath each window.</p>

<p>Enjoy a luxurious lunch, spend the night gazing at deep sea creatures, take in museum exhibits or even catch a glimpse at an underwater stripper pole in these seven wonders of submerged architecture. Located from 20 to 50 feet below the surface, these real-life submarine structures (including a couple concepts currently under construction) would make for a swinging town for mermaids and mermen if they were all located in the same place.</p>
<h4>Abandoned Underwater Strip Club, Israel</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59965" alt="Underwater Strip Club 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Strip-Club-2.jpg" width="468" height="507" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59964" alt="Underwater Strip Club 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Strip-Club-1.jpg" width="468" height="394" /></p>
<p>Once, this barnacle-covered underwater building in Eilat,  Israel was the <a href="http://www.redseastar.com/pictures-en.php">Red Sea Star</a> restaurant, bar and observatory. But when that didn&#8217;t work out, it became perhaps one of the weirdest submerged businesses of all time: a strip club. The entrance is above water; visitors crossed a 230-foot bridge and descended a flight of stairs to gain access, so no scuba suits were necessary. Surprisingly, the Nymphas Show Bar wasn&#8217;t a big hit. Since its closure, it has been abandoned. Marine biologist Gil Koplovitz captured a series of shots that peer inside, which can be seen at <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/02/underwater-strip-club_n_3696284.html">The Huffington Post.</a></p>
<h4>Water Discus Hotel, Dubai</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59967" alt="Underwater Hotel Dubai 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Hotel-Dubai-2.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59966" alt="Underwater Water Discus Hotel Dubai 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Water-Discus-Hotel-Dubai-1.jpg" width="450" height="600" /></p>
<p>If you&#8217;re skeptical that the Water Discus Underwater Hotel will ever really be built, you&#8217;re hardly alone &#8211; it seems like one of many fantastical structures in Dubai that get a lot of attention as concepts but never manage to become reality. However, the developer has <a href="http://skift.com/2013/07/01/dubais-futuristic-underwater-hotel-inches-closer-to-reality">announced that construction is about to begin</a>. The hotel will consist of a series of discs, some underwater and some above the surface, with 21 two-guest rooms in the submarine space.</p>
<h4>World&#8217;s Largest Underwater Museum, Mexico</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59968" alt="Underwater Museum Mexico" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Museum-Mexico.jpg" width="468" height="534" /></p>
<p>It may not have walls, but the <a href="http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/featured/the-largest-underwater-museum-on-earth/18259">world&#8217;s largest underwater museum</a> is impressive nonetheless, with a series of displays made of pH-neutral concrete that can only be seen by divers and tourists in glass-bottom boats. The sculptures were designed to attract algae and marine life, making them an ecosystem. A total of 400 structures are planned. The Cancun Underwater Museum is located off the coast of Isla de Mujeres, Mexico.</p>
<h4>Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-59969" alt="Underwater Restaurant Resort Ithaa" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Underwater-Restaurant-Resort-Ithaa.jpg" width="468" height="598" /></p>
<p>While many similar concepts have never gotten past the &#8216;impressive renderings&#8217; phase, the <a href="http://conradhotels3.hilton.com/en/hotels/maldives/conrad-maldives-rangali-island-MLEHICI/amenities/restaurants_ithaa_undersea_restaurant.html">Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at the Hilton Maldives Resort</a> has been open since 2005. Made of acrylic with a 270-degree panoramic view, the restaurant seats only fourteen at a time, for an intimate and quiet underwater dining experience (that&#8217;ll cost you at least $120 per person &#8211; for lunch.)</p>
