A new collection of shirts, jackets, dresses and more from fashion designer Mary Katrantzou recalls two very different design movements, one focusing on the hand-made (Arts & Crafts) and one on powerful, industrial-age graphics and shapes (the Bauhaus).

Debuted on the catwalk of London Fashion Week, this series celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, featuring colors, geometries and typographies recalling the school and movement. These are imprinted, however, on delicate and decorative apparel.

“The collection explores an intermingling of two different breeds of aesthetic, using their components to discover a new hybrid,”says Katrantzou, who drew inspiration in part from vintage Bauhaus posters but also Victorian-era patterns.

“I don’t think anyone would put the Arts and Crafts movement and the Bauhaus together conceptually, but I think it was the beginning of modernism, even if aesthetically it is not as visible.” In a way, these divergent styles represent different paths, but both were built on attention to detail and a belief in the careful and complete designs of everyday objects. Her pieces stitch together the utilitarian and organic sensibilities of the two movements.

“We wanted to choose some of the colours that are present in William Morris’ work and the Arts and Crafts movement, and bring them into the Bauhaus posters, and vice versa. I always loved the Bauhaus posters for their symbolic nature, and equally, I think William Morris as a visual language is equally distinctive.” Katrantzou, who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, draws a lot of ideas from architecture and built environments, often referencing structures from streets to steel trusses.

One of the most recognizable brand marks in the world — the curled alligator on Lacoste shirts — stepped out of the spotlight temporarily to make way for a series of endangered species, helping to raise awareness and fund their protection.

The French label selected the following animals, representing an array of kingdoms from around the globe: the Vaquita dolphin, Burmese roofed turtle, Northern sportive lemur, Javan rhino, Cao vit gibbon, Kakapo parrot, California condor, Saola, Sumatran tiger and Anegada ground iguana.

For each shirt, the number offered corresponded with the number of each species remaining the world This consequently limited series of white polo shirts was an immediate hit, and sold out quickly.

The special line was created in conjunction with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its save our species (SOS) partnership. Retail prices were set at $185 and with each purchase, a contribution helps IUCN and Lacoste battle for nature conservation all over the world.

The redesigned icons, meanwhile, are both familiar yet surprising, using similar scale, art and color strategies to the original, but simultaneously standing out — a good conversation starter for wearers concerned about the extinction crisis. Given the success of this endeavor, perhaps they will run additional such mini-series for other species, further raising awareness as well as money for pressing preservation causes.

Rivaling even the most surreal runway shows, these pencil-drawn, object-animated fashion illustrations use food and other found objects into cutting-edge apparel.

Amenian illustrator Edgar Artis starts with something simple: an illustrated figure that acts as an underlay. But things get strange quickly from there, as he drizzles on spaghetti and meatballs, sprinkles pencil shavings, or carefully arranges lettuce leaves to form dress patterns on top.

These mouth-watering works highlight the possibilities of ordinary colors, textures and patterns, like the fractal forms of fruits and vegetables or the organic diversity of trail mix.

Some are truly over the top, featuring entire entrees, like burgers, re-imagined as outfits (with an optional side of french fries). He says he was inspired after becoming “really tired of princess dresses,’ obsessively selling “beauty and perfection. I created a contemporary design which hides a beautiful message behind.”

“It reminds me of a caterpillar who is about to transform into a beautiful butterfly and fly,” says the designer. “Many people are afraid or shy of showing to everyone what they are capable of. Same situation was with me. Here is my advice, don’t ever ever be shy or afraid, open your beautiful world and show them who you are!”

In countries where walking barefoot is the norm, these durable shoes that grow with a child’s feet can improve health, confidence, even school attendance, according to The Shoe That Grows project from Because International.

Fast-growing feet have always been a problem for children, and is even more challenging in places where families can’t afford frequently purchasing pairs. A combination of velcro and fasteners helps allow these shoes to expand on demand — each pair can shift between five sizes (with three different starter sizes).

The group works with non-profits, schools, churches and individuals to bring this adaptable footwear to kids in need around the world. So far the organization has distributed 120,000 pairs in 91 countries.

“Without shoes, children are especially vulnerable to soil-transmitted diseases and parasites that can cause illness and even death. Children who get sick miss school, can’t help their families, and suffer needlessly.

“And since children’s feet grow so quickly, they often outgrow donated shoes within a year, leaving them once again exposed to illness and disease.”

These kinds of clothing innovations are also not limited to shoes. Ryan Yasin, at the time a master’s student in London’s Royal College of Art’s Innovation Design Engineering program, was likewise inspired to create outfits that would grow with a child. He started experimenting and realized that by pleating synthetic fabric in a particular pattern, it was possible for a piece of clothing to stretch in both directions. One of his early prototypes was able to be used from the age of 6 months up to 36 months, saving parents the cost and hassle of forever buying new jackets.

Using OpenStreetMap, the company lets you select between a black-on-white figure/ground representation or more traditionally-gridded white-on-black map. Ordered now and these should arrive by Christmas – a perfect holiday gift to compliment some urban grid dog tags.

The user-friendly selection tool allows you to get incredibly precise with your pick, creating a composition that is both personalized and aesthetically pleasing through a combination of panning and zooming. The above set of four examples, for instance, are simply variations on the same location at different scales.

A number of standard cities are presented but you can also search for your own location or address or your choice. Due to the nature of OpenStreetMap, you are encouraged to add data for any place not already in the system.
