    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112335" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-1a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/08/07/spider-bug-15-spooky-vw-beetle-car-art-sculptures/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Volkswagen</a> Type 1 Beetle, one of the 20th century&#8217;s most iconic vehicles, also served as a rolling <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2017/10/29/forever-a-loan-15-iffy-car-title-cash-loan-shops/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">car</a> canvas for artists just itching to bug society.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112336" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-1b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Over 21 million Type 1 Beetles were manufactured between 1938 through 2003, leaving an indelible mark on pop culture&#8217;s psyche. VW sought to monetize the classic Bug&#8217;s nostalgic appeal through the evocative New Beetle that debuted in 1997, and the subsequent A5 Beetle introduced in 2011.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112337" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-1c-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p>Now that <a href="https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-geneva-motor-show/volkswagen-confirms-beetle-wont-be-replaced" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">VW has declared</a> the current generation of Beetles to be the last, we can fondly look back to those “true” Bugs immortalized as art cars and transformed into artworks.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112338" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-1d-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p>The classic Bug made its last hurrah on July 30th of 2003, when the 21,529,464th and final original Type 1 VW Beetle rolled off the production line in Puebla, Mexico. The exquisite Beetle art car above, snapped by Flickr member Angélica Portales (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/frozen-in-time/albums/72157605799445908" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">A30_Tsitika</a>) in December 2010, hails from Mexico City. Artists Francisco and Xena Bautista decorated the late-model Bug with tiny seed beads in the traditional Huichol style – a painstaking process that took around 7 months to complete.</p>
<h4>Water Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112383" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-2c-644x419.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="419" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112384" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-2d-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Remember those old DDB magazine ads that featured a floating VW Bug? Well, those don&#8217;t apply to this replica Beetle since it&#8217;s made of concrete and weighs about 8 tons. You&#8217;ll find it &#8211; bring your wetsuit &#8211; among the many undersea artworks at the Underwater Museum, off the coast of Cancun, Mexico.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112385" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-2f-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112386" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-2e-644x451.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="451" /></p>
<p>Artist Jason deCaires-Taylor designed the <a href="https://www.sportdiver.com/article/news/new-volkswagen-beetle-sculpture-added-to-cancun’s-underwater-museum#page-4">sunken Bug</a> to be sea-life-friendly with pierced windows providing smaller fish with shelter and crustacean habitats accessible via slots under the faux doors. The roughened surfaces are designed to help new coral growths get a grip.</p>
<h4>For Ladybirds Only</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112343" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-3a-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112344" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-3d-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>While GM&#8217;s late and lamented luxo-barges epitomized the American Dream back in the day, the lowly VW Bug was a dream-come-true for countless car-buyers on the lower rungs of the economic ladder. It&#8217;s fitting, therefore, that Texas hosts not only the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/10/03/the-many-colors-of-cadillac-ranch/">Cadillac Ranch</a> but also a &#8220;herd&#8221; of five VW Beetles given a ladybug-like makeover.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112345" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-3c-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112346" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-3b-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll find this Buggalo-like herd of beetle-y Beetles at the <a href="https://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/8491">Running N Art Ranch</a> in Saint Jo, Texas, a town of about 1,000 souls in Montague County just south of the Oklahoma border. The quintet of decommissioned Bugs sport jointed legs made from old oil field pipes and are painted red with black polka-dots.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-112347" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/vw-beetle-art-car-3e-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Unlike the once-stately Caddys sticking out of the ground near Amarillo, these art cars are off-limits to amateur artists. Flickr member Nicholas Henderson (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/texasbackroads/albums/72157693216934425">TexasExplorer98</a>) visited the ranch in March of 2017.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30335" title="spider_bug_main" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug_main.jpg" width="468" height="420" /><br />
<!--wsa:gooold-->Spider Bug, Spider Bug, does whatever a Spider Bug does&#8230; wait a minute, just what exactly does a Spider Bug do?? Based on the spooky looks of these 15 long-leggedly Bug beasties made from metal pipes and recycled <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/06/13/vw-rv-ftw-the-amusing-amazing-beetle-minihome/" target="_blank">VW Beetles</a>, we&#8217;re guessing anything they want!</p>
<p><span id="more-30326"></span></p>
<h4>Lexington, OK Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30356" title="spider_bug1a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug1a.jpg" width="468" height="568" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/meltedplastic/4946593781/">Meltedplastic</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/soonerjh/41889981/">Soonerjh</a> and <a href="http://postcardsandroadtrips.blogspot.com/2011/05/vw-bug-spider.html">Postcards and Road Trips</a>)</span></p>
<p>That&#8217;s no &#8220;visual distraction&#8221; just off Hwy 77 near Lexington, Oklahoma&#8230; well actually, it is, and a BIG one to boot! And so what if it only has six legs; you know what they say about wounded animals. Anyway, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/caliban23_/2815446251/" target="_blank">the story goes</a> that the Spider Bug sculpture stands on the side lot of a VW graveyard and at one point in the past it overlooked a small auto racecourse that&#8217;s long since been reclaimed by weeds and scrub.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30355" title="spider_bug1b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug1b.jpg" width="468" height="426" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/radargeek/4675853897/">Radargeek</a>)</span></p>
<p>To whoever&#8217;s living in that house&#8230; GET OUT NOW!</p>
<h4>Kenora, Ontario, CA Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30350" title="spider_bug2_thumb" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug2_thumb.jpg" width="468" height="570" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68022967@N00/5100797145/">Martin Callum</a> and <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/16072">Roadside America / Joe Desiderio</a>)</span></p>
<p>Travelers gazing out the car window towards the the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway a mile or two east of Kenora, Ontario, might feel a sudden urge to put the pedal to the metal, just in case the <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/16072" target="_blank">giant Spider Bug</a> just off the tarmac happens to see them first. Then again, with its jaunty top hat and bold black &amp; yellow paint job, the automotive arachnid bears more than a passing resemblance to Mister Peanut.</p>
<h4>Reno/Sparks, NV Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30351" title="spider_bug3a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug3a.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.misterw.com/Reno/Reno033.html">MisterW</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bellaira/160625273/">Bellaira</a> and <a href="http://knittyotter.typepad.com/otterknits/2007/05/saturday_sky_bi.html">KnittyOtter</a>)</span></p>
<p>This <a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4062516-In-the-News-Reno-s-VW-Bug-Sculpture-moving-to-Sparks" target="_blank">David Fambrough masterpiece</a> was originally located in downtown Reno, NV, on the roof of an old fire station that was upcycled as a homeless shelter. Oddly enough (or maybe not, if you&#8217;re from Reno), the sculpture was the city&#8217;s first piece of public art. In 2008, however, with the building sold and the new owners unwilling to maintain the rusting Spider Bug, the Reno Arts &amp; Culture Commission voted to return the sculpture to Fambrough while recommending he offer it to Scudders VW Performance Specialists in nearby Sparks.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30352" title="spider_bug3b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug3b.jpg" width="468" height="425" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robsimpson/2256946792/">Rob-Simpson</a>)</span></p>
<p>It seems there wasn&#8217;t a roof in Reno sturdy enough to bear the weight of the Spider Bug, and Scudders was ready and willing to do whatever restoration work was necessary to the circa-1979 sculpture. As for Fambough, he couldn&#8217;t be happier. <em>&#8220;Putting this on top of your business&#8230;&#8221;</em> he said, <em>&#8220;talk about all the advertising in the world.&#8221;</em> And also talk about War of the Worlds, which was the first thing I thought of when I found the above superbly spooky photo by <a href="http://www.RobSimpsonPhotography.com" target="_blank">Rob Simpson</a>.</p>
<h4>Mysterious Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30344" title="spider_bug6" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug6.jpg" width="468" height="375" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showthread.php?p=372099">VolksRods</a>)</span></p>
<p>We&#8217;re not sure exactly where this tastefully painted Spider Bug is but there&#8217;s one thing you can count on: it knows where YOU are!</p>
<h4>Gassel &amp; Eindhoven, the Netherlands Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30347" title="spider_bug4a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug4a.jpg" width="468" height="512" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bug3ver/632581196/">Bug3ver</a>)</span></p>
<p>Tulips, wooden shoes, chocolate and&#8230; Spider Bugs? Add one more item to the Netherlands&#8217; claim to fame as the above towering infernal was seen striding across the countryside near Gassel in North Brabant&#8230; probably attacking windmills and stuff. Now that&#8217;s no gouda.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30346" title="spider_bug4b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug4b.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeyiron/213143046/">MonkeyIron</a> and <a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4062516-In-the-News-Reno-s-VW-Bug-Sculpture-moving-to-Sparks">VW Vortex</a>)</span></p>
<p>When reports first came in about giant spiders invading rock concerts and car shows in Holland, it was chalked up to the locals spending too much time in those infamous Amsterdam coffee houses. In fact, the Dutch Spider Bug does indeed exist, and was caught on film at the 1999 Dynamo Open Air music festival held near Eindhoven, the Netherlands.</p>
<h4>Swetsville Zoo, CO Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30345" title="spider_bug5" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug5.jpg" width="468" height="675" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://neighbors.denverpost.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&amp;t=9259552&amp;st=0&amp;sk=t&amp;sd=a&amp;start=0">Eric Neely / Denver Post</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/1987porsche944/2836990846/">Becca</a>)</span></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/10787" target="_blank">Swetsville Zoo</a> isn&#8217;t a &#8220;zoo&#8221; per se, unless one uses their imagination a bit. Created over a roughly ten-year span (1985-95) by former farmer Bill Swets, the Fort Collins, CO landmark features a mirthful metal menagerie built by Swets from old auto parts, disused farm machinery and scrap metal.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30363" title="spider_bug17" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug17.jpg" width="468" height="426" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/toria-clark/4428879610/">Toria Clark</a>)</span></p>
<p>The zoo&#8217;s resident Spider Bug conveniently shelters a picnic table, because if there&#8217;s anywhere you want to enjoy lunch with your family &amp; friends it&#8217;s beneath the belly of a giant spider&#8230; amiright?</p>
<h4>Avoca, IA Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30343" title="spider_bug7" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug7.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.sillyamerica.com/blog/2009/02/giant-spider-made-from-a-volkswagen-beetle/">Silly America</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/29377596@N04/3604469001/">Misskatherinemiller</a> and <a href="http://www.flentje.com/post/2011/02/08/2011-VW-Spider-Avoca-IA.aspx">Flentje.com</a>)</span></p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/16905" target="_blank">Phyllis Bruce</a>, this is a giant spider made of a Volkswagen body near Avoca, Iowa, <em>&#8220;is just sitting on this lot for no apparent reason!&#8221;</em> Not apparent to YOU, my dear Phyllis, but just wait until sundown&#8230; actually, get the heck outta there!</p>
<h4>Grace, ID Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30342" title="spider_bug8" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug8.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.redbubble.com/people/shaneran/art/3582043-salvaged-spider">Jan Tribe / RedBubble</a> and <a href="http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24613">VolksRods</a>)</span></p>
<p>Idaho&#8217;s famous for potatoes, Napoleon Dynamite, and now this tastefully trimmed Spider Bug! The unattributed artist seems to be channeling a little Black Widow, though we only can wish it was little. You&#8217;ll find this ominous static sculpture guarding a salvage yard near Grace, Idaho. Gosh!!</p>
<h4>North Palm Springs, CA Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30341" title="spider_bug9a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug9a.jpg" width="468" height="670" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://fuckyeahpalmsprings.tumblr.com/page/2">F Y Palm Springs!</a> and <a href="http://www.waymarking.com/gallery/image.aspx?f=1&amp;guid=07365fbd-536e-4bcd-8066-7fb5901e8a34&amp;gid=3">Waymarking</a>)</span></p>
<p>Most homeowners know that if you see a spider in hour house, it probably got in through a hole in the wall. Such is the case with giant spiders as well, at least it is with this spiky Spider Bug spied in front of the &#8220;<a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/1881" target="_blank">Hole In The Wall Welding</a>&#8220;, a former VW repair shop in North Palm Springs, California. Visitors are advised to be on the lookout for giant mice.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30340" title="spider_bug9b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug9b.jpg" width="468" height="400" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.waymarking.com/gallery/image.aspx?f=1&amp;guid=91eac2b0-71d6-4c23-911b-38dba5d7b959">Waymarking</a>)</span></p>
<p>Well, now we know why Santa doesn&#8217;t use reindeer to pull his sleigh anymore&#8230; you can guess what happened to the reindeer (burp).</p>
<h4>Port Hope, ON, Canada Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30339" title="spider_bug10" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug10.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiless/2684063926/in/set-72157614316302493/">Will S</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanci/3383427593/sizes/l/in/photostream/">K &amp; GM</a> and <a href="http://www.melanierobertson-king.com/wp02/?p=1753">Celtic Connexions</a>)</span></p>
<p>The picturesque berg of Port Hope, Ontario, is famed for its hospitality towards visitors&#8230; except for car-sized, bug-eyed varmints who get impaled on 20-foot steel poles. Hey, it&#8217;s a tradition.</p>
<h4>Taranaki, New Zealand Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30337" title="spider_bug11" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug11.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robnorwichuk/2935821592/">Robert Newell</a>)</span></p>
<p>The bejeweled Spider Bug above exudes an elegantly gothic vibe as it crouches on the lawn near the visitor&#8217;s centre in Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand. Ahh, Taranaki&#8230; come for the Spider Bug, stay for the Spider Bug&#8217;s dinner &#8211; take that any way you wish. Thanks to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robnorwichuk/" target="_blank">Robert Newell</a> for snapping this shot and approving its use here.</p>
<h4>Calgary, Alberta, CA Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30330" title="spider_bug12" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug12.jpg" width="468" height="600" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4062516-In-the-News-Reno-s-VW-Bug-Sculpture-moving-to-Sparks">VWVortex</a>)</span></p>
<p>That&#8217;s not snow on an old video capture you&#8217;re seeing, it&#8217;s snow as in the frozen white stuff. Hey, this is Calgary in Canada, you were maybe expecting palm trees? Regardless, this is one welded arachnid one won&#8217;t want to run into while walking home from a Stampeders-Roughriders game. Even Green Riders fans aren&#8217;t this scary.</p>
<h4>Erie, PA Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30331" title="spider_bug13" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug13.jpg" width="468" height="589" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5812048/dick-schaefer-is-a-true-junkyard-artist">Gizmodo</a> and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/14/junkyard-art-pennsylvania-dick-schaefer_n_876294.html#s291320&amp;title=Junkyard_Art">Huffington Post</a>)</span></p>
<p>Looking for something eerie in Erie, PA? Step right up, if you dare. Former auto dismantler turned junkyard artist <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/14/junkyard-art-pennsylvania-dick-schaefer_n_876294.html#s291320&amp;title=Junkyard_Art" target="_blank">Dick Schaefer</a> created the red-eyed, striped-legged, long-fanged Spider Bug above. &#8220;Usually, I will see the junk first, get an idea and look for a way to make it conform,&#8221; says Schaefer, who has also been known to turn cement trucks into bumble bees. Bees, my god.</p>
<h4>Rural Oregon Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30332" title="spider_bug14" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug14.jpg" width="468" height="680" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilpics/5186499472/">Scot Hart</a>)</span></p>
<p>Kudos to intrepid photographer Scott Hart, who captured the above white &amp; rust Spider Bug in a fenced field just off the I5 in Oregon. It appears the sinister sculpture (which may be one of the 4 original Fambrough pieces) roams a park beside a schoolyard&#8230; do your homework, kids, or else!</p>
<h4>Mound House, NV Spider Bug</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30334" title="spider_bug15a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug15a.jpg" width="468" height="515" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://dadada.com/photography/000061spider_bug.html">Steven John Koeppe © Dada Design</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/torchpost/3112017455/">Kreed99</a> and <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/1933">Roadside America</a>)</span></p>
<p>David Fambrough crafted the above Spider Bug with his usual attention to detail &#8211; the Bug has eight legs instead of the more typical six. It seems that Fambrough originally built <a href="http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/1933" target="_blank">four Spider Bugs</a> around twenty years ago and at that time all four could be seen alongside Hwy 395 just outside Reno.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30360" title="spider_bug16" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug16.jpg" width="468" height="585" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/thanophonic/4623019589/in/set-72157614394628493/">Omar Alan Pierce</a>)</span></p>
<p>Time passed and the Spider Bugs did as Spider Bugs do, namely roam across the desert landscape gobbling up unwary travelers on the road to no return.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-30333" title="spider_bug15b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/spider_bug15b.jpg" width="468" height="715" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/12513181@N07/with/2039527645/">K&amp;R, InnAtElmwood</a>)</span></p>
<p>The big bad <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/12513181@N07/with/2039527645/" target="_blank">black beauty</a> above ended up in Mound House, near Carson City, and is the tiny mining town&#8217;s main attraction&#8230; besides its 4 brothels, of course.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22040" title="VW_MiniHome_main" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_main.jpg" width="468" height="534" /></p>
<p><!--wsa:gooold-->Custom cars, trucks, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2009/07/01/futuristic-mobile-homes-trailer-trash-or-treasure/">motorhomes</a> and recreational vehicles were all the rage during the 1960s and 1970s but certain &#8220;carhouses&#8221; crossed the line into outrageousness as they criss-crossed the country. Among the most eyebrow-raising of the bunch was a VW Beetle RV conversion known variously as the Bugaroo or the MiniHome.</p>
<p><span id="more-22038"></span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22041" title="VW_MiniHome_1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_1.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.rvtravel.com/blog/rvsinthenews/2007_06_01_archive.html">RV Travel</a> and <a href="http://www.carlswellusedcarsandparts.com/Page_4.php">Carl&#8217;s Well Used Cars &amp; Parts</a>)</span></p>
<p>Carhouses or carhomes may have looked odd but the mechanics involved aren&#8217;t all that complicated. A variety of cars going back to the early 1950s were transformed into carhouses and most were eminently drivable &#8211; not to mention, livable. Take the 1958 Edsel Ranger carhouse above&#8230; after remaining roadworthy for decades and racking up hundreds of thousands of miles, it was finally auctioned off on eBay. An E for an E, as it were.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22043" title="VW_MiniHome_2" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_2.jpg" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22044" title="VW_MiniHome_2b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_2b.jpg" width="468" height="321" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.roadtransport.com/blogs/truck-and-van-blog/2007/08/volkswagen-bugeroo---wills-roadtransport-revival.html">Road Transport</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/21279663@N02/3263402917/">Fred W Truman</a>)</span></p>
<p>These bizarre love-children of Winnebago-type motorhomes and stock cars look decidedly odd but they&#8217;re at their best when the car is large. When the opposite is the case and the car is a Volkswagen Beetle, the results appear cute at first; borderline ridiculous once the surprise has worn off.</p>

<p>The simple but tough structure of the VW Type 1 &#8220;Beetle&#8221; owes much to its genesis as the Everyman&#8217;s Car of Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. As the images above indicate, the Type 1 can be modified into a pickup truck without much difficulty, notwithstanding its rear engine. Designs for camper versions were and are remarkably doable.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22046" title="VW_MiniHome_4" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_4.jpg" width="468" height="264" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.bangshift.com/displayPost.html?displayThis=Freiburger-s-Pic-of-the-Week-VW-Bug-Motorhome.html">BANGshift</a>)</span></p>
<p>Remarkably visible as well, a salient fact that might have helped convince the owner of the Beetle RV above to apply paint with obvious intent. He&#8217;s a rarity, though &#8211; sometimes things you see are just so strange no amount of paint can disguise that fact.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22047" title="VW_MiniHome_5" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_5.jpg" width="468" height="488" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81544521@N00/351306084">VW-Busman</a>)</span></p>
<p>Minihome DIY kits have been available online for some time now, costing $55 with an estimated $1,500 required to go towards the actual construction costs. The <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">exploded view</a> above from Mechanix Ilustrated magazine lays it all out &#8211; you provide the VW Bug, however.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22048" title="VW_MiniHome_6" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_6.jpg" width="468" height="507" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.stevproj.com/VWWdyPg1.html">Stevenson Projects</a>, <a href="http://www.vwworldseries.com/Beetles/RollsRoyceBugJamaica.html">VW World Series</a> and <a href="http://www.akhet.co.uk/sparky/index.htm">Akhet</a>)</span></p>
<p>The original VW RV kits (called the Bugeroo) first offered in the mid-1960s rode the wave of Bug conversions highlighted by dune buggies, woodies, and &#8220;Rolls Reichs&#8221; &#8211; Beetles with faux Rolls Royce grills. Companies like <a href="http://www.stevproj.com/VWWdyPg1.html">Stevenson Projects</a> still provide Woodie Bug conversion kits.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22049" title="VW_MiniHome_7" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_7.jpg" width="468" height="552" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">MiniHome</a>)</span></p>
<p>The VW RV was destined to remain a passing fad until Robert Q. Riley happened to pass one on a Los Angeles area freeway. Riley tracked down the manufacturer, who was working out of a small facility in Irvine, CA, and bought the rights to publish the plans.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22050" title="VW_MiniHome_8" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_8.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">MiniHome</a>)</span></p>
<p>Riley, under the aegis of <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">Robert Q. Riley Enterprises LLC</a>, was thus able to market the conversion without any significant investment in machinery or material. When the popular hobbyist magazine Mechanix Illustrated featured Riley&#8217;s plans, the MI MiniHome was born.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22056" title="VW_MiniHome_12" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_12.jpg" width="468" height="555" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.rvs-r-us.com/rv-museum.html">Unique RVs</a>)</span></p>
<p>The MiniHome is a tour de force of ergonomic design and space-saving ingenuity, if one can get past the stereotypical 70s Harvest Gold &amp; Avocado Green interior color scheme &#8211; the decor is up to the buyer, at least. At 125 inches long, 79 inches wide and 73.25 inches high, the camper offers copious living space that includes a full-size bed in the cabover section. Other <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">VW RV amenities</a> include a slide-out butane stove and stainless steel sink (above), a 50-lb icebox and a closet.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22051" title="VW_MiniHome_9" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_9.jpg" width="468" height="363" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">MiniHome</a>)</span></p>
<p>A pair of swiveling captain&#8217;s chairs turn 180 degrees, offering access to a modular lower bed in a hideaway compartment under the floorboards. A VW Bug that sleeps four &#8211; imagine that!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22052" title="VW_MiniHome_10a" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_10a.jpg" width="468" height="451" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22053" title="VW_MiniHome_10b" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_10b.jpg" width="468" height="295" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.rvtravel.com/blog/weirdrvs/labels/VW%20Morphs.html">RV Travel</a>)</span></p>
<p>All well and good, but anyone who&#8217;s driven a VW Beetle knows it&#8217;s no speed demon, nor does it handle anything like other German makes such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Porsche. Though owners won&#8217;t be taking the MiniHome to any gymkhanas anytime soon, one real concern is keeping up with highway traffic.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22054" title="VW_MiniHome_13" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_13.jpg" width="468" height="625" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://jalopnik.com/222900/volkswagen-bug-camper-please-dont-blame-it-on-the-drugs-epilogue">Jalopnik</a> and <a href="http://www.strangevehicles.com/content/item/147068.html">Strange Vehicles</a>)</span></p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.rqriley.com/minihome.html">Riley</a>, <em>&#8220;Maximum speed is reduced about 10 mph, and fuel economy suffers slightly because of increased air resistance at highway speeds.&#8221;</em> In other words, passing 18-wheelers on the Interstate is to be undertaken with extreme care.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22055" title="VW_MiniHome_11" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/VW_MiniHome_11.jpg" width="468" height="705" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.volksworld.com/news/cars/251791/when-beetle-meets-mini-rv-welcome-the-winnie-bug-o.html">Volksworld</a>, <a href="http://gypsyjournal.net/blog/2009/09/16/its-everywhere-you-look/">Gypsy Journal</a> and <a href="http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=846711">The Samba</a>)</span></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.volksworld.com/news/cars/251791/when-beetle-meets-mini-rv-welcome-the-winnie-bug-o.html">MiniHome</a> may provoke a smile, maybe even a snicker or two, but it could be the answer many potential RV owners are looking for. The $1,500 cost for construction materials (according to Riley) is definitely cheap and once one sources a VW Bug in decent shape, the total cost should still be under $20,000 &#8211; compare that with the sticker price of a new Winnebago or other full-size RVs. Plus, the MiniHome&#8217;s diminutive size will impress those who feel driving a standard RV would be like piloting a cruise ship.</p>
