<p>A contemporary home in Spain was designed to wrap a surface well and sits on the associated subterranean cistern, creatively converting it into the solid foundation and habitable basement of this new living space.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108901" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/cistern-backyard-644x817.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="817" /></p>
<p>The so-called Casa Aljibe (Cistern House) by architect Alejandro Valdivieso (images by <a href="http://davidfrutos.com/">David Frutos</a>) is located in Alpedrete on the site of an old local water system that used to supply the neighborhood but stopped functioning over 50 years ago.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108903" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/cistern-patio-644x765.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="765" /></p>
<p>The cistern structure was left intact, however, and used for storage. When it came time to build a home for the descendants of the property owners, the architects decided build with and around these existing features.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108899" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/inside-out-644x421.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="421" /></p>
<p>The resulting design features a curved glass facade shaped by the well and a light prefabricated metal and timber frame system that rests comfortably on the existing stones of the cistern below. The cisterns&#8217; ceiling functions as a patio.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108900" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/cistern-interior-644x816.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="816" /></p>
<p>Behind the house, the ground level drops off and the cistern-turned-basement can be accessed via the backyard while the new building elements cantilever out above.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108898" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/side-stairs-644x814.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="814" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108902" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/cistern-well-644x652.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="652" /></p>
<p>The new additions are designed to be simple and geometric, informed by the shape of what is already on the site but also creating material contrast to distinguish old from new.</p>

<p>In a dual effort to address urban blight and ailing infrastructure, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is piloting a new program to turn the basements of abandoned houses slated for demolition into rainwater basins. Meanwhile, the surface expression of these cisterns could be anything from a revealing expression of this new underground infrastructure to micro-parks or urban farms depending on neighborhood needs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84666" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/basement-cistern-project-468x317.jpg" alt="basement cistern project" width="468" height="317" /></p>
<p><a href="http://landscapearchitecturemagazine.org/2015/07/21/flood-this-basement/">Conceived by Erick Shambarger</a>, the deputy director of <a href="http://city.milwaukee.gov/sustainability#.Va02kUXEiBU" target="_blank">Milwaukee’s Office of Environmental Sustainability,</a> <em>&#8220;The BaseTern concept is simple. Stormwater will be directed to an abandoned or foreclosed property’s basement, which, after the aboveground structure is demolished, is waterproofed and filled with gravel and stormwater-harvesting cells.&#8221; </em>Effectively, load on existing stormwater runoff systems is reduced and complete demolition costs are simultaneously mitigated.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84668" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/underground-cistern-system-milwaukee-468x297.jpg" alt="underground cistern system milwaukee" width="468" height="297" /></p>
<p>GIS data shows that the neighborhoods with the largest flood risks are also those with the highest foreclosure rates. The city owns over 900 deserted and condemned buildings, now potential candidates for unusual adaptive reuses. A basement cistern can hold anywhere from 10,000 to 40,000 gallons of water during storms and reduce adjacent flooding accordingly. Similar systems could also be deployed in coastal areas particularly susceptible to floods and where many waterfront homes are already being abandoned.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84667" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/underground-basement-abandoned-fill-468x296.jpg" alt="underground basement abandoned fill" width="468" height="296" /></p>
<p>Author <a href="http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/abandoned-basements-as-stormwater-basins.html">Geoff Manaugh</a> observes that <em>&#8220;while there is something metaphorically unsettling in the idea that parts of a blighted, financially underwater neighborhood might soon literally be underwater—transformed into a kind of urban sponge for the rest of Milwaukee—the notion that the city can discover in its own economic misfortune a possible new engineering approach for dealing with seasonal flooding and super-storms is an inspiring thing to see.&#8221; (Flooded basement image by <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/naql/18102120575/in/photolist-tzC6Ma-gF7oY-824n1p-bd9J5n-s9DiEV-7r7iQJ-hjGxMh-ep63qj-d5W96y-hjGyTL-8NUphK-d5L6iE-dyhTr2-2j3oAn-7z68K7-k7x8Dw-nf61MN-fnhbP-eUk1kj-4XbfP4-99Et3T-9WH8cD-eWS7tU-ouU9qA-eef4Sp-98jHcu-ofqWQH-owD922-sfEQmy-gGo2dn-8t6WHH-8yXAdZ-8DpjTh-6usxpP-rUcc46-y7kH1Y-8qcPBF-edaAQC-f7eCWs-4aDCaZ-ppbzJK-xAhWLH-6dZG2e-bsci9G-edaStj-m4tzEi-aZ5Gm-9PnF4K-73Spnp-dpCWWy">Naql</a>).</em></p>
