<p>Can you think of an iconic electronic object for every letter of the alphabet? A for Apple, B for Bose, C for Canon, D for Dell and so on, all the way to Z? Graphic designer Vinicius Araujo found the most obvious (and satisfying) answer for all 26 letters and crafted them into renderings of appropriately shaped electronics. The series, which he calls ‘36days Electronics,’ is based on the Helvetica typeface.</p>

<p>For Apple, there’s a classic Macintosh computer with a floppy disk drive; Bose looks like a speaker; Epson is a printer; Motorola is the most ancient of cell phones; Sony’s a Walkman.</p>

<p>Functionality isn’t the point here &#8211; a computer monitor shaped like a D obviously isn’t going to do you much good. But it’s a fun visual exercise that will likely spur some nostalgia for the technology days of yore &#8211; or perhaps gratitude that our gadgets have evolved.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103728" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/CIRCUIT-SCRIBE-644x550.gif" alt="" width="644" height="550" /></p>
<p>Conductive paint, ink and thread can be drawn, woven or even tattooed into objects like denim jackets, carpeting and leather iPad cases to make them into electrical circuits, adding a new layer of functionality as well as cool-looking graphic patterns. Draw circuits in any shape, create smart objects that interact with apps, and answer your phone while biking by swiping your finger across your sleeve. These 10 projects &#8211; some of which are available commercially &#8211; show how far conductive designs have come<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/11/25/its-electric-14-fun-and-interactive-conductive-designs/"> in less than four years.</a></p>
<h4>Conductive Wallpaper by UM Project</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103732" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-wallpaper-1-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103731" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-wallpaper-2-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103730" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-wallpaper-3-644x446.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="446" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103729" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-wallpaper-4-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>Instead of hiding wiring for lights away within walls, <a href="http://www.umproject.com">‘Conduct’ by UM project</a> and wallpaper company Flavor Paper lays it all out as part of the wall’s design using conductive inks to create decorative circuitry. The circuits control a lamp, fan, speaker, light box and hinged mirror, activated them when someone touches the copper dots, using their body to complete the electricity circuit.</p>
<h4>Jacquard by Google: Conductive Levi’s Denim Jacket</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103710" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/commuter-jacket-3-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103711" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/commuter-jacket-2-644x276.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="276" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103712" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/commmuter-jacket-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/watch?v=yJ-lcdMfziw?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p><a href="https://atap.google.com/jacquard/">Jacquard by Google</a> teamed up with Levi’s to create a smart denim jacket made with woven conductive yarn, designed specifically for bike commuters. The aim is to seamlessly integrate technology into textiles, prioritizing the garment over the gadget and making it ultra-wearable. The threads connect to a smart tag on the sleeve that communicates with your mobile device, turning the jacket into a gesture-controlled canvas so you can get directions, adjust the volume on your music or answer a phone call using finger swipes on your sleeve. The Commuter will be available this fall for $350.</p>
<h4>Circuit Scribe Conductive Ink Pen</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103727" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/circuit-scribe-2-644x601.gif" alt="" width="644" height="601" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103726" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/circuit-scribe-3-644x448.gif" alt="" width="644" height="448" /></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.circuitscribe.com/category/kits-bundles">’circuit scribe</a>’ ballpoint pen allows you to draw circuits in any shape using a quick-dryings conducting ink, connecting them to a coin battery, paper clip and LED or more complex parts. While similar conductive pens have been offered before, this one differs by producing just the right amount of ink flow to achieve an ideal conductivity of 50-100 milliohms/square/mil. You can buy kits starting at just $10.</p>
<h4>‘Electrick’ Conductive Paint Turns Anything Into a Touch Pad</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103725" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/electrick-644x359.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="359" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103724" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/electrick-2-644x361.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="361" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103723" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/electrick-3-644x359.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="359" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/38h4-5FDdV4?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>This conductive paint from <a href="http://www.figlab.com">Future Interfaces Group</a> (a research lab within the Human-Computer Interaction institute at Carnegie Mellon) turns virtually any surface into a touch pad when you add an electric current over the painted conductive surface using a pair of electrodes. When you touch the surface, the current is disrupted, and the ‘Electric’ program detects exactly where the object has been touched, showing it on a screen. The technology could potentially help engineers test prototypes of touch pad gadgets.</p>
<h4>Conductive Knot Lamp by Celia Torvisco</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103722" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-knot-lamp-644x550.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="550" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103721" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/conductive-knot-lamp-2-644x526.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="526" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/84899848' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Tie the threads dangling from this minimalist lamp together, and you’ll complete the circuit to turn it on. Designer <a href="http://www.celiatorvisco.com/en.html">Celia Torvisco</a>, who’s also known for her conductive ceramic radio, envisions the flashlight for use while camping, riding a bike or reading a book.</p>

<p>When you pick up this bright yellow receiver, you won’t hear a dial tone on the other end &#8211; what’s waiting for you instead is some of the worst music the 1990s had to offer. The ‘90s are calling and they want their boomboxes, payphones, ugly neon colors and alt rock radio hits back, but maybe you want to keep them by completing this hack yourself. A ‘digital alchemist’ calling himself Fuzzy Wobble explains how to procure an old payphone and load it up with music so it can be two obsolete objects at once.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/_P3AHQTdxB4?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>

<p>&#8220;When I first started this project I suspected payphones would be hard to get, expensive, and a hassle to hack. I was wrong on all three! Online I was able to get city-grade cast-iron/stainless payphone for relatively cheap. And the hack, surprisingly, turned out to be quite elegant!&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-99160" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/payphone-boombox-hack-gif.gif" alt="payphone-boombox-hack-gif" width="640" height="360" /></p>

<p><a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/90s-Payphone-Boombox-Hack/">Follow along step-by-step on Instructables</a> to learn how to control the keypad, switches and audio on a payphone, whether you actually want to make your own ‘90s boombox or use it for some other audio project. The tutorial will tell you where to find a payphone and how to program the guts using modern electronic components like the Adafruit MP3 Maker Shield and the Arduino Mega, as well as offering the code and laser cuter templates.</p>
<p>“I would so totally just use this to rick roll people,” says one Instructables commenter. Sure. That&#8217;s no less relevant to our current world than The Offspring, Semisonic and Coolio.</p>

<p>Blast your tunes out the eyes of either C-3PO or a Stormtrooper, the bass pounding from beneath their heads, with this set of Star Wars speakers painstakingly reproduced from George Lucas’ original designs. A company called ACWorldwide landed a licensing deal with Disney to release a range of characters from the films over the next 12 months, and is <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starwars-speakers/star-wars-bluetooth-speakers">funding production of the first round on Kickstarter.</a></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84827" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/star-wars-speakers-7-468x380.jpg" alt="star wars speakers 7" width="468" height="380" /></p>

<p>The designers started by sculpting originals of both heads, ensuring that every last detail is an exact replication of how the characters originally appeared. After making molds, they created reproducible castings using high-grade injectable plastic for “a more tactile feel and solid look.” The Stormtrooper helmet is made up of 48 different components.  In fact, these speakers are more like real character heads than the props used in the movies, boasting real vents and grills instead of paint and stickers that mimic them.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starwars-speakers/star-wars-bluetooth-speakers/widget/video.html" width="468" height="351" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"> </iframe></p>

<p>The 2.1 system combines stereo sound with a down-facing ported subwoofer for powerful bass. Measuring 12 inches in height, the indoor/outdoor speakers can be plugged in or taken on the go with a rechargeable battery. Player music wirelessly with built-in Bluetooth, or hook the speaker up to your PC or external audio systems. Once paired with your device, the speaker’s eyes with glow blue and the character will either say “I do believe they think I am some sort of god” or “move along.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84828" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/star-wars-speakers-6-468x332.jpg" alt="star wars speakers 6" width="468" height="332" /></p>

<p>Each speaker will come in special Collector Branding packaging “reserved for only the finest authorized Star Wars merchandise.” <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starwars-speakers/star-wars-bluetooth-speakers">As a backer on Kickstarter</a>, you can choose from standard editions of each character, limited collector’s editions, or perhaps some of the most luxurious Star wars merch ever made: a white gold-plated version of the Stormtrooper, and a rose gold-plated C-3PO.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83615" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ram-house-1-468x312.jpg" alt="ram house 1" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The curtain of the future might filter out not just light and prying eyes but also electronic signals to give us peace and privacy of another kind. <a href="http://www.spacecaviar.net/projects/ram-house/">The RAM House </a>by Genoa-based design research collaborative Space Caviar ironically looks a bit like a cage, as if you have to put yourself in time-out in order to escape from all of the texts, emails, app notifications and other distractions of modern life, but the idea of a space with an automatic ‘off switch’ is an intriguing one.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83614" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ram-house-2-468x317.jpg" alt="ram house 2" width="468" height="317" /></p>
<p>We’ve reached the point where the gaze of passersby is not nearly so much a privacy concern as the surveillance we’re under inside our own homes with all of the curtains closed, the designers note. “As the space of the home becomes saturated by ‘smart’ devices capable of monitoring their surroundings, the role of the domestic envelope as a shield from an external gaze becomes irrelevant: it is the home that is observing us.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83612" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ram-house-4-468x312.jpg" alt="ram house 4" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>“The RAM House responds to this near-future scenario by proposing a space of selective electromagnetic autonomy. Wi-Fi, cellphone and other radio signals are filtered within the space’s core by various movable shields of radar-absorbent material (RAM) and faraday meshing, preventing signals from entering and &#8211; more importantly &#8211; exiting. Just as a curtain can be drawn to visual expose the domestic interior of a traditional home, panels can be slid open to allow radio waves to enter and exit, when so desired.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83613" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ram-house-3-468x468.jpg" alt="ram house 3" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>The house itself is ultra-compact, with cabinet modules on sliding rails offering access to the office, kitchen, library and bathroom functions. When fully collapsed, the cabinets form a solid electronically shielded unit. Once you open them you allow signal traffic to flow.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83611" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ram-house-6-468x368.png" alt="ram house 6" width="468" height="368" /></p>
<p>It’s kind of frightening to think about just how exposed we are within our supposedly private spaces thanks to technology &#8211; convenience comes at a cost, and smart homes learn just about all their is to know about their occupants in order to best serve them. The RAM House is like the proverbial hut in the woods to which we can retire when we want to truly escape, while enabling us to rejoin the modern world at the flip of a switch.</p>
