<p>Perched atop the Kodiak Queen, a former WW2-era Navy fuel barge, this 80-foot ‘Kraken’ now serves as the base of an artificial reef and marine research station on the ocean floor near the British Virgin Islands. The project, entitled <a href="http://www.divethebviartreef.com/#">BVI Art Reef</a>, accomplishes a range of goals all at once: saving a decorated ship from destruction, transplanting coral to a new site in the hopes that it will flourish, creating an epic dive site and underwater art gallery, and providing a new habitat for marine life.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108014" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/kraken-7-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108018" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/kraken-2-644x410.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="410" /></p>
<p>Photographer <a href="https://www.facebook.com/owenbuggyphotography/">Owen Buggy</a> documented the process, from the early stages of building the massive sea monster to sinking it in April 2017 to checking out the results a few months later. Sunken off the coast of the island Virgin Gorda with the help of tugboats and helicopters, the installation is already helping to rehabilitate heavily over-fished marine populations. Filmmaker <a href="https://www.robsorrenti.film/">Rob Sorrenti</a> also got some great footage, presented as a documentary entitled ‘The Kodiak Queen,’ which is due for release in early 2018.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/213095372' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108016" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/kraken-4-644x805.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="805" /></p>
<p>“This is the story of learning from past lessons and coming together to create something greater; rooted in joy and fueled by the power of play,” reads the BVI website. “This is the story of a group of friends from around the world who fell in love with the BVIs… and turned a weapon of war into a platform for unity &#8211; and a catalyst for new growth. This charitable kick-off in the British Virgin Islands combine art, ocean conservation, world history, marine science and economy… to solve a series of challenges in the BVIs by asking: how can we use play and collaboration to install permanent solutions that boost the local economy, secure the prosperity of these pristine islands for generations to come?”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-108015" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/kraken-6-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>“Our solution: a fantasy art eco-dive and ocean conservation site that puts the BVIs on the map as having one of the most unique and meaningful dive sites in the world… and one of the most forward-thinking approaches to creative problem solving that secures the education of its youth, and the health and prosperity of this island nation.”</p>

At its D23 Expo in Los Angeles this week, Disney announced a new <a href="https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2017/07/plans-unveiled-for-star-wars-inspired-themed-resort-at-walt-disney-world/">Star Wars-themed hotel</a> where every window will offer views of &#8216;outer space,&#8217; every employee will be in character, and every guest will be the protagonist of their very own Star Wars storyline.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-105576" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/star-wars-hotel-2-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-105574 size-wide644" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/star-wars-hotel-4-644x363.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="363" /></p>
<p>Premiering as part of the new Disney 360 vacation concept, the hotel will be a &#8216;living adventure.&#8217;</p>
<p>“It’s unlike anything that exists today,&#8221; says Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks &amp; Resorts. “From the second you arrive, you will become a part of a <em>Star Wars</em> story! You’ll immediately become a citizen of the galaxy and experience all that entails, including dressing up in the proper attire. Once you leave Earth, you will discover a starship alive with characters, stories, and adventures that unfold all around you. It is 100% immersive, and the story will touch every single minute of your day, and it will culminate in a unique journey for every person who visits.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-105573 size-wide644" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/star-wars-land-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>

<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/aP1jcbPRxc8?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Disney also unveiled models of the new park along with its name, <a href="https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2017/07/star-wars-galaxys-edge-announced-as-name-for-star-wars-lands-at-disney-parks/?KNC-FY17_PA_ACT_DOM_D23-SW|BR|G|4171905.WW.AM.04.09|&amp;keyword_id=kwd-335992739728|dc|disneyworld%20star%20wars|207497890520|p|5238:3|&amp;ef_id=Vs@7IgAABPkT78ks:20170720004043:s"><em>Star Wars: Galaxy&#8217;s Edge</em>.</a> The park will also be an interactive experience with each guest as a character &#8211; so you don&#8217;t have to stay in the resort to enjoy that aspect of the action, but it certainly seems like it would add to the overall effect.</p>
<p>&#8220;One attraction will make you feel like you’re on a Star Destroyer inside a hangar bay. It’s an attraction built on a scale we’ve never done before.</p>
<p>The second attraction will give guests the opportunity to fly the Millenium Falcon, piloting the ship, shooting blasters or preparing for hyperspace – all while completing a critical mission. But how you perform on the mission holds even bigger stakes: perform with skill and you may earn extra galactic credits, while bringing the ship back banged up could put you on the list of a bounty hunter. End up on Harkos’s list and you may face a problem if you show up at the local cantina!&#8221;</p>

<p>In the same magic-realist vein as artistic giants like Salvador Dalí, M.C. Escher and Renê Margritte, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RobGonsalves.Official/">Rob Gonsalves</a> crafts elaborate and interconnected scenes that shift subtly to form remarkable illusions of dizzying depth and scale.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96755" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/magical-realism-644x317.jpg" alt="magical-realism" width="644" height="317" /></p>
<p>The 55-year-old Canadian of Portuguese descent takes settings that look ordinary at first glance, then layers and intersects them to form fantastic fictional realities. Many of his pieces tackle overlap, blurring the boundaries of natural and built environments.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96756" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/night-skyscraper-trees-1-644x964.jpg" alt="night-skyscraper-trees" width="644" height="964" /></p>
<p>Trees falling from the tree on a street form a canopy for a second, semi-secret world below. Books slowly turn into steps as they make their way around a domed library. Bricks become rooftops as children walk along a path. Skyscrapers morph into trees, blending nature and cities.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96758" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/trees-biking-644x982.jpg" alt="trees-biking" width="644" height="982" /></p>
<p>After college, Gonsalves worked as an architect and painted trompe-l&#8217;œil murals and theater sets on the side. As the popularity of his artistic works grew, he turned to painting as a profession.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96753" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/library-morph-644x428.jpg" alt="library-morph" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-96750" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/ocean-sky-644x321.jpg" alt="ocean-sky" width="644" height="321" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.42857;">&#8220;Although Gonsalves&#8217; work is often categorized as surrealistic, it differs because the images are deliberately planned and result from conscious thought. Ideas are largely generated by the external world and involve recognizable human activities, using carefully planned illusionist devices. Gonsalves injects a sense of magic into realistic scenes. As a result, the term &#8220;Magic Realism&#8221; describes his work accurately. His work is an attempt to represent human beings&#8217; desire to believe the impossible, to be open to possibility.&#8221;</span></p>

<p>Modern-day children move through a decidedly un-fairytale-like world with unlikely gangs of friendly wild animals to protect them in this series of paintings so realistic, it takes a moment to realize they’re not photographs. Artist <a href="http://kevinpetersonstudios.com/gallery">Kevin Peterson</a> creates these incredible scenes in oil paint on panel, highlighting the inner strength it can take to survive in places beset with violence and poverty.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93379" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-5-644x515.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 5" width="644" height="515" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93382" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-2-644x265.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 2" width="644" height="265" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93381" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-3-644x320.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 3" width="644" height="320" /></p>
<p>Princesses regally make their way through rubble in abandoned industrial districts with crowned polar bears at their heels, point the way for the fierce lions acting as their champions and saunter down sidewalks with raccoons and foxes. The contrast of wild creatures and worn, neglected urban environments is a startlingly effective one most often utilized for post-apocalyptic scenes, but the addition of the little girls suggests a hope of human resilience.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93378" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-6-644x551.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 6" width="644" height="551" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93377" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-7-644x316.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 7" width="644" height="316" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93376" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-9-644x518.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 9" width="644" height="518" /></p>
<p>“My work is about the varied journeys we take through life,” says Peterson in his artist statement. “It’s about growing up and living in a world that is broken. These paintings are about trauma, fear and loneliness and the strength that it takes to survive and thrive. They each contain the contrast of the untainted, young and innocent against a backdrop of a worn, ragged, and defiled world. Support versus restraint, bondage versus freedom, and tension versus slack are all themes that I often visit.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93375" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-8-644x643.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 8" width="644" height="643" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93373" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-10-644x371.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 10" width="644" height="371" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93383" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/urban-fairytales-1-644x414.jpg" alt="urban fairytales 1" width="644" height="414" /></p>
<p>A look through <a href="http://kevinpetersonstudios.com/gallery">Peterson’s history of work</a> reveals an interesting progression from fairly straightforward (albeit stunningly realistic) portraits of women and little girls in urban environments to these fairytale scenes. Some of these paintings are also going large-scale as public murals. Check out details and stay on top of Peterson’s current work<a href="https://www.instagram.com/kevinpetersonart/"> on Instagram.</a></p>

<p>Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin purchased a sprawling abandoned bowling alley in Santa Fe, New Mexico so an art collective called Meow Wolf could transform it into a bizarre and colorful immersive environment called <a href="https://meowwolf.com">The House of Eternal Return</a>. Step inside to find 20,000 square feet of trippy black-lit spaces you can literally get lost within, crawling into a fireplace to find an expansive new space full of surreal wonders like neon forests, alien plants and twenty-foot rabbits.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91402" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Screen-Shot-2016-04-18-at-3.43.44-PM-468x308.png" alt="Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 3.43.44 PM" width="468" height="308" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91398" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-1-468x702.jpg" alt="house of eternal return 1" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91400" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Screen-Shot-2016-04-18-at-3.44.23-PM-468x320.png" alt="Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 3.44.23 PM" width="468" height="320" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91390" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-9-468x312.jpg" alt="house of eternal return 9" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Unlike most art installations, it’s made to be experienced physically, with strange new sights around every corner waiting for you to touch, climb, squeeze and swing your way through all of their secrets. The result of a collaboration between over 100 artists, the House of Eternal Return is a “wild new form of non-linear storytelling which unfolds through exploration, discovery and 21st century interactivity. The premise: Something has happened inside a mysterious Victorian house that has dissolved the nature of time and space. Venture through the house of the Selig family, and discover secret passageways into fantastic dimensions!”</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-91394 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-5-468x312.jpg" alt="Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91389" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-10-468x312.jpg" alt="house of eternal return 10" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-91396 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-3-468x312.jpg" alt="Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91397" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-2-468x312.jpg" alt="house of eternal return 2" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>There are no guides, maps or pathways, and you could have a different experience in the space no matter how many times you explore it. At the center of the massive facility is a full-sized Victorian house where everything’s a little bit off: floors ripple, lights come streaming out of drains, refrigerators lead to secret tunnels and even the toilets contain unexpected surprises. You may enter through the front door, but you don’t leave that way. In fact, it’s hard to tell whether you’ll ever leave.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91401" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Screen-Shot-2016-04-18-at-3.43.52-PM-468x312.png" alt="Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 3.43.52 PM" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-91399" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Screen-Shot-2016-04-18-at-3.44.43-PM-468x326.png" alt="Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 3.44.43 PM" width="468" height="326" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-91393 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-6-468x312.jpg" alt="Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-91391 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-8-468x312.jpg" alt="Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-91395 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/house-of-eternal-return-4-468x312.jpg" alt="Meow Wolf House of Eternal Return" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>A team of six writers created the story elements, taking cues from the objects the various participating artists produced for the installation. In addition to this art exhibit turned fantasy world, there’s a jungle gym, a children’s museum and a music venue hosting such acts as CocoRosie and Mykki Blanco. Martin has granted Meow Wolf with a ten-year lease to do whatever they want with the space, so there’s plenty of time to plan a road trip to check it out. In the meantime, check out all the photos on<a href="https://www.instagram.com/meow__wolf/?hl=en"> Meow World&#8217;s Instagram.</a></p>
