8-Bit Fashion by Kunihilo Morinage

Designer Kunihilo Morinage of Anrealage unveiled a collection of 8-bit fashions at Tokyo’s Japan Fashion Week in 2012, featuring pixelated dresses, tights, shoes, masks, jackets and more. As the models walked at the show, a pianist played music reminiscent of ‘80s video games.

Superhero Mural Made of Sticky Notes

A group of employees at an office used 8,024 colorful post-it notes to create a series of 8-bit portraits of superheroes and comic book characters including Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman. The use of sticky notes makes it look as if the murals are made of tiles from afar, but get close up and you’ll see that they’re actually paper. This idea would be easy to reproduce at home, if you’e so inclined.

Gamer Geek Wearables 12 8 Bit Fashion Decor Designs

The rise of surveillance technology, including face recognition software, drones, body scans and cell phones as GPS locators, has resulted in some creative attempts to elude it. Designer Adam Harvey experiments with “fashion to challenge authoritarian surveillance” in a series called Stealth Wear (via PSFK). Anti-Drone garments protect against thermal imaging, a special cell phone pocket blocks signals, and off-the-wall makeup and hair styling techniques make it hard to ID faces.

The Anti-Drone garments are made with a lightweight, breathable metallized fabric that reflects heat, masking the wearer’s thermal signature so they won’t show up in thermal imaging scans. Two of the designs are inspired by Muslim garments, including the burqa and scarf. “Conceptually, these garments align themselves with the rationale behind the traditional hijab and burqa: to act as ‘the veil which separates man or the world from God,’ replacing God with drone,” says Harvey.

These garments aren’t intended to be serious gear for survivalists looking to elude The Man. They’re fashion, Harvey explains, exploring the ways in which we can interact and aestheticize our culture of rising surveillance. Technically, even the small parts that aren’t covered by the garments, like the hands and face, can give you away. The OFF Pocket, however, is definitely usable: it’s a flexible waterproof cover fitting most sizes of phones, including Nexus and iPhones, that blocks all incoming and outgoing call signals.

If you want to avoid facial recognition software determining your identity, you’ll have to get even more creative. Developed as his master’s thesis, Harvey’s project CV Dazzle attempted to find makeup and hair styles that would elude recognition. This collaboration between hair stylists, makeup artists and fashion designers used custom software that exposes the vulnerabilities of the OpenCV face detection algorithm, creating styles that exploit these weaknesses. The looks are definitely a bit cyber-punk, but it’s interesting to see them gain a little practicality. A slinky, super-customizable dress made of 120 zippers. A fur coat crafted from dozens of cuddly teddy bears. A tie that’s taller than its wearer. These kooky yet thoughtful fashions are the work of Chilean-born artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz, who was among just three South Americans to be included among Sotheby’s Important 20th Century Designs auctions.

Known for his large-scale avant garde installations and innovative furniture designs like the Magistral Cabinet and the stunning Metamorphosis shelf, Errazuriz also dabbles in fashion. While the zipper dress may be a bit of a novelty, it’s also highly wearable, making it a great example of functional art.

The Bear Fur coat is part of what Errazuriz calls hi ‘Duchamp series’. “Teddy-bear-fur coat is an homage to the Campana Brothers and a wink at the 80s eco-friendly fur campaign that seems to be poignant today considering the comeback of furs in fashion runways.”

The Glove Dress may not be very washable, but it definitely makes a statement. The Hanging Tie makes a socially symbolic yet functionally useless accessory into a tongue-in-cheek reference to its ‘tyranny’, with a length that could allow it to be used as a noose.
