<p>Iconic cities come to life in this custom wood table series, their resin streets and waterways glowing through grids of raised wooden architecture, all sitting on top of wrapping thin and dark steel supports.</p>

<p>Crafted by <a href="https://newwoodesign.patternbyetsy.com/">Wood Designs</a> in Warsaw, this array of oak surfaces includes cultural capitals like New York, Berlin, London and Paris, but buyers can select a specific city or neighborhood as well.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115552" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/nightlight-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>In each piece, a layer of resin on top flattens out and protects the surfaces for everyday use, while red, blue and green resins are lit up from below, an effect making the roads and rivers look like retro etchings on a giant circuit board.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115550" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/streets-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>&#8220;The guiding principle of each of our products is that it is unique and also gives the interior a character in which it is located. I want my products users to give a sense of uniqueness. We believe that every detail matters.&#8221;</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98007" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/city-data-blocks-644x248.jpg" alt="city-data-blocks" width="644" height="248" /></p>
<p>Somewhere between data visualization and civic artwork, these info-driven diagrams reveal wealth disparities in the centers of America&#8217;s second and third largest cities. <a href="http://scherabon.com/">Herwig Scherabon</a>&#8216;s project, titled simply Income Inequality, uses a matrix of blocks (minimicking magnetized iron) to highlight rich and poor neighborhoods.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98006" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/urban-data-la-chicago-644x743.jpg" alt="urban-data-la-chicago" width="644" height="743" /></p>
<p>The city grids form a recognizable backdrop for these axonometric representations, allowing viewers to read the baseline built enviroment against the overlaid information. In turn, the millions of stacked pixel blocks end up forming an alternative landscape of skyscraper-like structures in the urban environment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98005" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/income-inequality-representations-644x1288.jpg" alt="income-inequality-representations" width="644" height="1288" /></p>
<p>The net result is a map of the city&#8217;s invisible patterns and correlations shaped by power, money and time, revealing inequalities and mechanisms of segregation. Above: Chicago&#8217;s infamous low-income South Side (with Lake Michigan for reference). Below: poor areas of Los Angeles located directly next to the downtown core.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98004" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/cityscape-by-wealth-and-poverty-644x1288.jpg" alt="cityscape-by-wealth-and-poverty" width="644" height="1288" /></p>
<p>The final presentation was mounted on a pair of wooden boards with the city names shown on the cites, exhibited at the Glasgow School of Art graduate show. Captions on the side give more details on the diagrams.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98001" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/city-captions-on-side-644x970.jpg" alt="city-captions-on-side" width="644" height="970" /></p>
<p>From the artist/designer: &#8220;The two large prints (150x75cm) are visualizations of income inequality in Los Angeles and Chicago and are currently shortlisted for the Information is Beautiful Awards. They are printed on matte Somerset Velvet paper and mounted on thick wooden boards. The images are abstract diagrams of these cities that show a high resolution matrix of blocks. The height of these blocks corresponds to the income in the respective output area.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98003" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/downtown-millions-of-blocks-644x427.jpg" alt="downtown-millions-of-blocks" width="644" height="427" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98002" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/wall-mounted-artworks-644x524.jpg" alt="wall-mounted-artworks" width="644" height="524" /></p>
<p>&#8220;It is part of the design idea to inspire the viewer to look for their own neighborhood or other areas that interest them. I want to trigger a train of thought for what the reasons behind inequality might be. I am always fascinated by the patterns and correlations in the urban fabric. The politics behind urban planning tell us a lot about the people who live in these places and the powers who shape them. I think that it is utterly important to try to unveil the inequalities and the segregating mechanism that we got used to live with.&#8221;</p>

<p>Presented at the 2016 Venice Architecture Bienalle, these new communities are designed to be entirely self-reliant, recycling their own waste, generating their own energy and producing their own food. Urban, suburban and rural strategies are combined in fresh ways that could lead to a new paradigm for sustainable living.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92429" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/design-village-468x334.jpg" alt="design village" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92427" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/integrated-greenhouse-468x334.jpg" alt="integrated greenhouse" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>Dubbed ReGen by its creators at <a href="http://www.effekt.dk/">EFFEKT</a>, this new self-sustaining community typology grew out of a Stanford University Paper. Thanks to the backing of entrepreneurs, the first pilot is set to launch in The Netherlands this summer with others coming soon to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany and planned for China and Africa.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92434" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/regen-community-468x281.jpg" alt="regen community" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92433" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/regen-model-468x351.jpg" alt="regen model" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Each village features combinations of homes, greenhouses and public buildings, interconnecting vertical farming efforts with everyday living. Like a dome-free version of some retrofuturistic 1960s vision, the idea is that each village unit is effectively self-contained, able to thrive off the grid without polluting or depending on outside resources.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92432" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/program-468x292.jpg" alt="program" width="468" height="292" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92431" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/regent-model-468x294.jpg" alt="regent model" width="468" height="294" /></p>
<p>Unlike other Utopian schemes, however, a great deal of design, science, engineering and money is going into making these work. The housing and community layouts reflect new urbanist sensibilities (such as walkability and density) as well as ruralist traditions (agriculture and access to nature).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92430" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/modular-architecture-468x429.jpg" alt="modular architecture" width="468" height="429" /></p>
<p>Integrated solar power systems provide energy for heating, cooling and electric cars. Community participants share responsibility for water and waste management systems. Fruits and vegetable are grown individually as well as communally. Various housing types are offered, each with adaptable modularity designed around seasonal energy savings and human comfort factors.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92428" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/green-village-square-468x334.jpg" alt="green village square" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92425" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/town-at-night-468x334.jpg" alt="town at night" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Our modern lifestyle is utterly unsustainable and this calls for more resilient solutions for the future,&#8221; explained EFFEKT partner Sinus Lynge. &#8220;The technology already exists, it is just a matter of applying science into the architecture of everyday life. ReGen Villages is engineering and facilitating the development of off-grid, integrated and resilient neighbourhoods that power and feed self-reliant families around the world. The time has come to redefine residential real-estate development for the next three billion people coming to the planet.&#8221;</p>

<p>Driving along a straight highway in the American countryside, you may find yourself forced to turn right or left, then turn again just to keep moving ahead, all to compensate for a rectilinear planning system imposed on a spherical planet.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88524" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/grid-correction-468x468.jpg" alt="grid correction" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Picture running two fingers along a globe from the equator to the North Pole, starting an inch apart but following parallel lines. Eventually, they will converge and ultimately they will touch. At smaller scales, the effect is all but invisible, but when tens of miles are involved, and as seen from the sky, it becomes quite pronounced.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88525" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/brid-broken-road-system-468x468.jpg" alt="brid broken road system" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Dutch artist and photographer <a href="http://www.gercoderuijter.com/">Gerco de Ruijter</a> dug into the history of this phenomena after noticing these periodic &#8220;grid corrections&#8221; strange during an artist residency at the <a href="http://www.gercoderuijter.com/gerco/">Ulrich Museum in Wichita</a>, Kansas, that appeared to happen for no immediately apparent reason. They take various shapes and forms, including zigzags, angles and curves, and some are less obvious than others (except from above).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88523" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/gridded-geometry-468x629.jpg" alt="gridded geometry" width="468" height="629" /></p>
<p>The cause dates back centuries, to the egalitarian <a href="https://www.instagram.com/the.jefferson.grid/">Jefferson Grid</a>, designed to ensure equal and fair land distribution by carving up rectangular townships the undeveloped country west of the original 13 states. Each was six square miles, and framed by borders and roads running in straight lines, parceled for sale and development in part to pay off debts following the Revolutionary War.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88526" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/grid-correction-adjustment-highway-468x468.jpg" alt="grid correction adjustment highway" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Those implementing Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s plan stumbled upon a flaw in its perfectly geometrical approach, analogous to the classic dilemma of fitting a square peg in a round hole.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88527" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/gride-correction-rural-america-468x468.jpg" alt="gride correction rural america" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>&#8220;It did not take long for legislators to understand that a township could not be exactly six miles on each side if the north-south lines were to follow the lines of longitude, which converged, or narrowed, to the north,&#8221; explains landscape architect James Corner in <em>Taking Measures Across the American Landscape</em>. &#8220;The grid was, therefore, corrected every four townships to maintain equal allocations of land.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88522" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/grid-curves-468x468.jpg" alt="grid curves" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>&#8220;This added up to a detour every 24 miles, from sea to shining sea,&#8221; writes <a href="http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/gerco-de-ruijter-grid-corrections-highways-driving-wichita">Geoff Manaugh</a>. &#8220;These particular doglegs are most clearly seen far from urban centers, in the agricultural countryside, where the regular, quilted appearance of rural land use makes them more visible.&#8221; There are perhaps larger lessons to be found in this geometric anomaly, about the best-laid plans and how they intersect with an imperfectly-aligned reality.</p>
