<p><span style="line-height: 1.5;">Climb a ladder, swing on a hammock-like seat and run your hands along various wooden surfaces on this strange polyphonic playground, and your movements will create a unique song. <a href="http://www.studiopsk.com/polyphonicplayground.html">Studio PSK</a> teamed up with beatboxer <a href="http://reepsone.co.uk">Reeps One</a> to create this multi-sensory play experience for this year’s London Design Festival, encouraging people to interact with an unusual physical fusion of music, design and technology.</span></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84656" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/polyphonic-playground-2-468x322.jpg" alt="polyphonic playground 2" width="468" height="322" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/133545104' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Designer Patrick Stevenson-Keating d Reeps record a bunch of different sound banks of samples, which were then loaded onto the program Ableton Live and mapped to trigger points on the playground. A product called ‘Electric Paint,’ which sends signals to the computer, is screen-printed onto paper tiles and covered in protective acrylic, acting as giant keys on a keyboard.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84655" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/polyphonic-playground-3-468x334.jpg" alt="polyphonic playground 3" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>The wooden playground frame is like one big musical instrument in this sense, setting off cascades of sound as participants clamber up the steps or take a trip down the slide. In addition to the conductive paint on the wooden elements, the team integrated copper tape into the slide and conductive thread in the swings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84654" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/polyphonic-playground-4-468x263.png" alt="polyphonic playground 4" width="468" height="263" /></p>

<p>“We were always very clear from the start that we wanted ‘play’ to be an important part of the project,”<a href="http://www.bareconductive.com/news/qa-polyphonic-playground-by-studio-psk/"> the designer tells Bare Conductive</a>. “…Often we communicate quite complex ideas or narratives, but by employing a playful strategy to do so, we can engage with the audience in more meaningful ways. This was certainly the hope for the Polyphonic Playground.”</p>

<p>Dreamed up by creative agency FRIENDSHIP and commissioned by fashion retailer e5, the installation features what looks like the most absurdly oversized shower head in existence looming over commuters as they pass through the station. A sign simply says, &#8216;Pull for compliment.&#8217; </p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/compliment-shower-6-468x312.jpg" alt="compliment shower 6" width="468" height="312" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77299" /></p>

<p>Anyone who does so (not minding the fine print, which reads &#8216;Smile, you&#8217;re on camera,&#8217;) instantly gets hundreds of complimentary phrases rained upon them and everyone watching. The little blue waterdrop-shaped papers bear messages like &#8220;You look like a million bucks today.&#8221;</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74574" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-1-468x311.jpg" alt="airball 1" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>When a parking garage is considered a landmark in itself and used as the setting for fashion shows, music videos and orchestral performances, perhaps it&#8217;s no surprise that people are happy to hang out there for hours on end playing airbag. <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/04/08/can-a-parking-garage-be-sexy-miamis-1111-lincoln-road/">1111 Lincoln Road by Swiss architecture firm Herzog de Meuron</a> is a work of modern art, so it was a natural setting for Snarkitecture to show off some of their own designs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74573" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-2-468x350.jpg" alt="airball 2" width="468" height="350" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74572" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-3-468x350.jpg" alt="airball 3" width="468" height="350" /></p>
<p>Known for unexpected installations and temporary works of architecture, the Brooklyn-based collaborative practice <a href="http://www.snarkitecture.com/projects/airball/">set up a bright white game room</a> on level 5 of the carpark, inviting users to play ball and compete side-by-side on two fully-custom basketball arcade-style shootout games.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74571" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-4-468x350.jpg" alt="airball 4" width="468" height="350" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74569" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-6-468x323.jpg" alt="airball 6" width="468" height="323" /></p>
<p>Of course, what takes this installation to the next level isn&#8217;t just the fact that it&#8217;s located in a parking garage &#8211; it&#8217;s the stunning views of the Miami skyline that guests take in as they play. No worries about losing your ball over the side, as there are safety nets in place.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74570" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-5-468x343.jpg" alt="airball 5" width="468" height="343" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-74568" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/airball-7.jpg" alt="airball 7" width="468" height="363" /></p>
<p>The garage itself is famed for appearing incredibly light despite its concrete construction, influenced by designer Jacques Herzog&#8217;s perception of Miami as &#8220;all muscle without cloth.&#8221; Some of the levels feature triple-height ceilings to accommodate special events with the city&#8217;s Art Deco district as a backdrop.</p>

The entire facade of the Ars Electronic Building in Linz, Austria has become the world&#8217;s largest playable Rubik&#8217;s cube thanks to a color-changing illuminated facade controlled by a 3D-printed device. Anyone who wants to try their hand at the &#8216;<a href="http://puzzlefacade.com/">Puzzle Facade</a>&#8216; manipulates the hand-held interface-cube like they would an ordinary Rubik&#8217;s cube, and their movements are translated to the building.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62591" alt="Rubiks Cube Architecture Project 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Rubiks-Cube-Architecture-Project-2.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>The interactive display, by Spanish artist and designer Javier Lloret, uses bluetooth to connect the cube to a software program that converts the information into color and light. Only being able to see two sides of the building increases the difficulty factor.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62590" alt="Rubiks Cube Architecture Project 3" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Rubiks-Cube-Architecture-Project-3.jpg" width="468" height="312" /><br />
<div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/79616059' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Of course, if you think you&#8217;re skilled enough to try to crack a Rubik&#8217;s cube this big, you&#8217;d better be pretty confident, because your handiwork is going to be on citywide display. Watch it in action above.</p>
