<p>Seeming like a ghostly image of structures long gone overlaid onto the current reality, these<a href="http://www.domusweb.it/en/art/2017/05/18/edoardo_tresoldi_archetipo.html"> wire mesh architectural creations</a> arch over 75,000 square feet of event space in Abu Dhabi. The way the mesh shifts between transparency and opacity depending on how it’s layered, paired with its grid pattern, gives it the look of a light-based projection, yet it’s physical and three-dimensional, crafted in full-scale skeletal form to suggest structures rather than bring them to fruition.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103936" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-8-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103935" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/main-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103944" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-1-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Artist Edoardo Tresoldi <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/04/04/ghosts-or-architecture-past-14-fossils-of-fallen-buildings/">previously resurrected an ancient church</a> in Puglia, Italy that had been destroyed by earthquakes in the 13th century right where it once stood, allowing visitors to get a sense of how the structure interacts with the site before and after its demise. This time, Tresoldi sculpts a whole series of architectural sculptures, along with flying birds and cubes that hang suspended in midair.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103943" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103942" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-3-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103940" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-4-644x328.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="328" /></p>
<p>The Abu Dhabi installation acts as a decorative tableau for a royal event attended by 1,900 guests from all over the Middle East, and took three months to complete, representing the artist’s first time creating a large installation for an indoor space. After the event, some of the structures will be moved and reassembled in public places across the UAE capital, including museums, parks and universities.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103939" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-5-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103938" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-6-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-103937" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/tresoldi-7-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Many of these forms are reminiscent of previous Tresoldi works, including an archway used on a fashion runway, and a caged bird. Tresoldi creates figurative wire mesh sculptures, as well. You can see the evolution of his process <a href="https://www.behance.net/edoardotresoldi">at his Behance profile.</a></p>

<p>Designed for empty warehouses or buildings under construction, these material-light shelters provide functionality for liminal interiors either past their prime not yet in use. Places like the infamous <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/09/26/skyscraper-slums-insider-tour-of-worlds-tallest-tent-city/">Tower of David</a>, a restarted project <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/07/29/5000-residents-being-evicted-from-worlds-tallest-vertical-slum/">previously inhabited by skyscraper squatters</a>, would be an ideal candidate for <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/04/08/modular-retrofit-bamboo-micro-homes-in-deserted-factories/">this sort of system.</a></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85080" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-light-house-468x312.jpg" alt="modular light house" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/YaYXih25FFA?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>A polyethylene-coated metal grid frames these modest shelters, serving as walls and doors and supporting interior shelves and an exterior fabric facade. A plastic-laminated plywood floor floats above concrete or whatever raw surface is found in a target structure. Nylon nets provide a degree of privacy while letting in light and can be covered by opaque cloth as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85077" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-dwelling-inside-concrete-468x312.jpg" alt="modular dwelling inside concrete" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85078" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-micro-warehouse-dwelling-468x312.jpg" alt="modular micro warehouse dwelling" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>Each dwelling can be completed with just $1200 and while no heating or cooling is included the system is intended to work well in tropical or other climates supporting open-air living. Since a stable roof and floor are provided, the main task is simply filling in gaps for habitation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85076" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-dwelling-interior-design-468x312.jpg" alt="modular dwelling interior design" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>All(zone) drew inspiration for their Light House from traditional architecture of Thailand, often designed to be collapsed and moved as needed.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85068" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-housing-prototype-468x468.jpg" alt="modular housing prototype" width="468" height="468" /></p>

<p>The light and flat-packable materials make it easy to ship these systems in conventional containers or other forms of transit, making them suitable possibilities for emergency shelters as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85073" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/modular-sleeping-bed-space-468x469.jpg" alt="modular sleeping bed space" width="468" height="469" /></p>

<p>The designers tested their prototype by deploying it in a parking garage and staying within their mockup module for a few nights.</p>

<p>In essence, it has the look and feel of wood, but the flexibility of fabric, all rolled into one composite mesh that is durable but able to be molded into all kinds of creative patterns both temporary and permanent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="flexible wood mesh furniture" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/flexible-wood-mesh-furniture.jpg" width="468" height="306" /></p>

<p>From its Italian creators at <a href="http://www.mammafotogramma.it/about/">MammaFotogramma</a>: <em>&#8220;Woodskin is a composite material, developed and patented by our design firm. This highly flexible surface – a sandwich wood and high performance mesh – was created by a process of excavation with a CNC cutting machine. By dividing the rigid plan of wood into small triangle, the material is freed &#8211; able to be shaped as the maker desires.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>The result has advantages of both decorative malleable materials and functional solid systems, enabling a wide range of potentials for use in furniture and interior design. Following a broader trend in complex 3D architecture, the mesh of CNC-cut Russian plywood stitched together with layers of vinyl makes the most abstract shapes possible.</p>
