<p>Whether your furry friends are canine or feline, this pair of posh pet architecture companies have your Modernist domesticated animal needs (quite literally) covered.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86089" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-furniture-468x311.jpg" alt="modernist cat furniture" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>And for those domiciles home to both cats and dogs that do not share space, fear not: the Puphaus is made for the outdoor dog and Meyou created for the indoors cat.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86090" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/designer-dog-living-468x264.jpg" alt="designer dog living" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p>First, the <a href="http://www.pyramddesignco.com/puphaus/">Puphaus</a> borrows domestic architectural design elements but employs a tools-free approach for easy assembly, creating a backyard home for your pup that could be cooler than your own house.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86092" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/designer-dog-house-468x273.jpg" alt="designer dog house" width="468" height="273" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Sporting backgrounds in graphic and industrial design, dog-loving founders Roy Fleeman and Zach Griggs wanted to design &amp; build something unique for man&#8217;s best friend: the Puphaus. Time to ditch the plastic igloos and give our pups some stylish new digs.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86087" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-ball-468x310.jpg" alt="modernist cat ball" width="468" height="310" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86088" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-desktop-cat-468x299.jpg" alt="modernist desktop cat" width="468" height="299" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://meyou-paris.com/">Meyou</a> line of cat furniture by Parisian designer Aude Sanchez approaches the problem as a question of interior design, aiming to create habitats that will not just look good next to but also become part of your decorative scheme.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86086" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-bed-468x339.jpg" alt="modernist cat bed" width="468" height="339" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86083" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-observer-468x329.jpg" alt="modernist cat observer" width="468" height="329" /></p>
<p>The resulting cat cocoons are made for curious and playful kitties to use for shelter, napping, hiding or even sharpening their claws.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86084" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-kitty-stool-468x636.jpg" alt="modernist kitty stool" width="468" height="636" /></p>
<p>The Ball, The Cocoon and The Bed are variations on the same design approach, each with slightly different layouts and features &#8211; they can work individually or as a set for various rooms.</p>

<p>Flexible and portable, this hanging hot tub hammock can be suspended from trees or other supports or tucked into scooped-out depressions along sandy beaches or on snowy mountainsides, compact enough to be checked on a plane with its associated portable heating unit.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81887" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/hydro-hammock-beach-water-468x263.jpg" alt="hydro hammock beach water" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81885" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/hydro-hammock-kid-468x263.jpg" alt="hydro hammock kid" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p>The highly-mobile <a href="http://hydrohammock.com/">Hydro Hammock</a> requires only 20 gallons (less than half of a typical bathtub and supports use by two adults to be used as a hot tub and can be used to line existing voids or suspended in midair. An accompanying device pumps water from wherever it is available and heats it electrically along the way &#8211; an eventual goal for future models is to use solar heat so no batteries or other external power source will be required. The extra-durable, high-tensile-strength material supports up to 700 pounds and its canvass-like surfaces give it traction for users.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81886" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/hydro-hammock-cabin-468x263.jpg" alt="hydro hammock cabin" width="468" height="263" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81890" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/hydro-hammock-design-468x311.png" alt="hydro hammock design" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Aside from its core function as a hot tub, the heavy-duty fabric and associated pump can be reconfigured to turn the system into an outdoor shower or left empty and simply used as a traditional hammock. Its primary target audience, however, is people who wish to have a retreat from extreme environments, taking a hot (and optionally: bubble-filled) vessel with them for breaks from cold ocean waters in the summer or freezing outdoor temperatures in the winter.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/P1kxwA1SzCw?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>More from its makers: <em>&#8220;Durable and portable hammocks ready for soothing hot or cool refreshing water. Relax, rejuvenate and fully stretch out in comfort beyond the constraints of an iron or fiberglass bathtub. Equipped with a portable water heater system, LPG or electric. Hydro Hammocks require less water than bathtubs and have a slip resistant texture. The shapes are adjustable and are easy to set up either fully or partially suspended.&#8221;</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-79362" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/lacuna-large-volume-art-468x239.jpg" alt="lacuna large volume art" width="468" height="239" /></p>
<p>Stacked books form the structural columns of this remarkable structure while support beams in between serve as shelves for even more volumes that can be borrowed, all scanned and donated by the Internet Archive. Even the roof is formed of reading material, featuring fluttering book pages suspended from support wires. Like <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/06/25/little-local-staircase-cinema-sidewalk-library-projects/2/">Free Little Libraries</a>, this huge book repository offers its wares to anyone who wants to take a novel to read and (optionally) return, in turn letting each person who interacts with it to permanently shift its shape.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-79363" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/lacuna-building-structural-books-468x256.jpg" alt="lacuna building structural books" width="468" height="256" /></p>
<p>Opening in one month at the Bay Area Book Festival, this temporary building is made to dissolve &#8211; the act of removing books from its shelves will change the way it looks and how light passes through its emptying walls. Reading benches in and around its twelve alcoves provide spaces for retreat or interaction.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-79364" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/lacuna-structural-design-diagram-468x308.jpg" alt="lacuna structural design diagram" width="468" height="308" /></p>
<p>The title of this project, <a href="http://www.projectlacuna.com/what-is-lacuna">Lacuna</a>, is also an obscure word referring to missing pages or sections of a book. Its creators <a href="http://www.fluxfoundation.org/" target="_blank">FLUX Foundation</a> have a great deal of experience building robust but interactive public art and architecture, including large-scale projects for Black Rock City (as part of the Burning Man festival). Over 200,000 books were actually donated by the Internet Archive, but the remaining 150,000 volumes will be saved for future similar projects.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-79365" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/lacuna-project-sketch-468x232.jpg" alt="lacuna project sketch" width="468" height="232" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/xTf23CGwAkM?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>The Book Festival will also feature talks and readings by hundreds of authors as well as other structures and exhibits. More on the design and its inspiration:<em> &#8220;Lacuna is a temple to books. Each of the twelve alcoves of Lacuna are formed by pillars created out of stacked books. Connecting these pillars are shelves filled with books. Above, fluttering book pages attached to guy-wires create a thatch-like roof, creating a space in which visitors literally, and figuratively, inhabit the interiority of books and their contents. &#8220;</em></p>

<p>A solution for all seasons and regions, the premise is simple: every would-be urban farmer has space, weather and other growing constraints, and yet draws from the same set of essential needs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-63856" alt="urban farming exploded axon" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/urban-farming-exploded-axon.jpg" width="468" height="574" /></p>
<p>For some folks the focus may be raising chickens and a few hardy outdoor plant varieties that can stand the shifts in weather.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="urban farm detail box" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/urban-farm-detail-box.jpg" width="468" height="676" /></p>
<p>For others, perhaps in colder climates, built-in storage compartments (that helpfully double as benches) and miniature greenhouse spaces may be the essential or desired accessories.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="urban farm modules benches" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/urban-farm-modules-benches.jpg" width="468" height="326" /></p>

<p>A series of wooden slats rhythmically wrap the exterior, creating both material continuity between sections as well as a way to hide joints between separate pieces in plain sight.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-63860" alt="urban farm wood wire" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/urban-farm-wood-wire.jpg" width="468" height="252" /></p>

<p>The currently-built prototype features dark-stained natural wood and examples of most of the potential modules, demonstrating their feasibility. It includes the wired outdoor area and indoor coop for chickens, for instance, as well as a planter and a secret storage bench section.</p>

<p>Its organic form fits its function as a Cité du Corps Humain (Museum of the Human Body) like a metaphorical glove &#8211; interlocked fingers were, in fact, part of the conceptual inspiration for this new museum in France.</p>

<p>With a medical school more than a millennium old, Montpellier is a fitting location for a nearly 10,000 square-meter place for people to <em>“explore the human body from an artistic, scientific and societal approach through cultural activities, interactive exhibitions, performances and workshops.”</em></p>

<p>Working with local firm <strong>A+ Architecture</strong>,<em> </em><a href="http://www.big.dk/">BIG </a>was first shortlisted then selected to complete the project. Their ability to format compelling modes of visual communication no doubt helped improve their prospects with the jury.</p>

<p>Weaving together nature and the city, a series of indoor and outdoor spaces interlock to shape programmatic and public areas. <em>&#8220;The museum’s roof functions as an ergonomic garden – a dynamic landscape of vegetal and mineral surfaces that allow the park’s visitors to explore and express their bodies in various ways – from contemplation to the performance – from relaxing to exercising – from the soothing to the challenging.&#8221;</em></p>
