Japanese art director Yuni Yoshida is well known for her surreal digital creations, particularly those manipulating the human body into unnatural forms, but a new series takes the opposite approach. “Layered” is a collection of food photography in which fruit, burgers and other food items are cut apart and rearranged in pixelated or spliced forms, making them look like Photoshopped images.

For the pixelated series, Yoshida selected the color palette in a given arrangement of food and sourced “pixels” from a variety of other foods to recreate the tones. Look closely at the “pixels” in the pineapple image, for example, and you’ll see that most of them aren’t pineapple at all, but the effect is brilliant.

8-Bit Fashion by Kunihilo Morinage

Designer Kunihilo Morinage of Anrealage unveiled a collection of 8-bit fashions at Tokyo’s Japan Fashion Week in 2012, featuring pixelated dresses, tights, shoes, masks, jackets and more. As the models walked at the show, a pianist played music reminiscent of ‘80s video games.

Superhero Mural Made of Sticky Notes

A group of employees at an office used 8,024 colorful post-it notes to create a series of 8-bit portraits of superheroes and comic book characters including Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman. The use of sticky notes makes it look as if the murals are made of tiles from afar, but get close up and you’ll see that they’re actually paper. This idea would be easy to reproduce at home, if you’e so inclined.

When you blow up an image to many times its actual size and see each individual pixel, all of the details and color gradations that seemed so fine and subtle suddenly become so coarse and abstract you can hardly believe you’re looking at the same picture. Artist Christian Faur reproduces this effect with the most unexpected of media: crayons, set into frames with the tips out.

Often working with pictures taken during the Great Depression, Faur chooses crayons in colors that match the values in the photographs. He then painstakingly puts them into place. Seen close-up, the works can be seen for what they are: patterns of crayons. But take a few steps back and the image comes together.

The three-dimensional nature of the crayons creates an image that seems to shift as you move around it, going out of focus as you view it from either side.

“My earliest memories of making art involve the use of wax crayons,” says Faur. “I can still remember the pleasure of opening a new box of crayons: the distinct smell of the wax, the beautifully colored tips, everything still perfect and unused. Using the first crayon from a new box always gave me a slight pain. Through a novel technique that I have developed, I again find myself working with the familiar form of the crayon.”

Here’s a beautiful example of how street art can transform the most mundane, uninteresting sidewalk into a miniature gallery that captures the attention of harried passersby. A black faucet on Mercer Street in New York City ‘pours’ what looks like a digital, pixelated stream of water in an installation known as ‘Pixel Pour 2.0‘.

This three-dimensional installation appears to be either the work of artist Kelly Goeller of //kneeon, who produced a very similar installation called ‘Pixel Pour‘ back in 2008, or someone inspired by that work.

The phrase “8 Bit” evokes images of dusty old videogames and dank recreation rooms with shag carpeting. It’s time to blow this stereotype to smithereens, with glorious, time consuming pixel art that does nostalgia justice.
