<p>Comprised of hair-raising scenes designed to keep you on the edge of your seat, this series of photos leads your mind to jump forward in time, picturing the catastrophes about to unfold.</p>

<p>Photographer Aaron Tilley worked with art director Kyle Bean to create the sequence for Kinfolk Magazine&#8217;s &#8220;adrenaline&#8221; issue. Their collaboration, titled <a href="http://www.kinfolk.com/in-anxious-anticipation/">In Anxious Anticipation</a>, evokes a sense of expectant dread, all through still shots that simply lead the brain to fill in the blanks.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89869" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/black-ink-white-shirt-468x364.jpg" alt="black ink white shirt" width="468" height="364" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89870" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/anxious-anticipation-rock-matches-468x331.jpg" alt="anxious anticipation rock matches" width="468" height="331" /></p>
<p>In one, an ink pen is poised to drip on a clean white shirt below. In another, a rock looks ready to light a fire, prepped to swing across a set of strike-anywhere matches.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89867" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/bowling-ball-bubble-wrap-468x301.jpg" alt="bowling ball bubble wrap" width="468" height="301" /></p>
<p>Each picture cues to viewer to complete the sequence, imagining the sight and sound, for instance, of a bowling ball running along and popping an unrolled sheet of plastic bubble wrapping.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89865" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/balloon-hover-over-nails-468x521.jpg" alt="balloon hover over nails" width="468" height="521" /></p>
<p>From the magazine: &#8220;The connection between what the mind perceives and how the body reacts is a curious relationship. Adrenaline flows into our autonomic nervous system when it anticipates that something bad is about to happen—not because something bad is already happening. This hormonal offensive was an essential survival tool for our earliest ancestors that came with our fight-or-flight response, which defends us against immediate threats.&#8221;</p>

<p>Photographing real people in actual places, <a href="https://www.lensculture.com/sergenajjar">Serge Najjar</a> manages to make the mundane seem strange and fantastical, highlighting the intersection of humans and the architectural spaces they inhabit.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87093" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/abstract-roof-jumper-468x468.jpg" alt="abstract roof jumper" width="468" height="468" /></p>

<p>His planned-looking portraits of people in urban environments are surprisingly spontaneous, appearing staged but usually featuring strangers he has never met and captured as he wanders cities.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87094" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/abstract-circles-building-468x468.jpg" alt="abstract circles building" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87088" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/abstract-flag-architecture-468x468.jpg" alt="abstract flag architecture" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Technically, Najjar, a lawyer by trade in Beirut, Lebanon, is not even a professional photographer, though the beauty and popularity of his work would suggest otherwise.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87092" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/abstract-window-view-468x585.jpg" alt="abstract window view" width="468" height="585" /></p>

<p>His work, which spans from his home city to Rome and Berlin, features both generic architecture and famous places, all with his eye for making the familiar stream foreign and fresh.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87087" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/abstract-folded-window-468x585.jpg" alt="abstract folded window" width="468" height="585" /></p>

<p>While there are common threads, themes and angles to much of his photography, it is impossible to describe the commonality strictly in terms of perspective, as various works break the very conventions he generally follows.</p>

<p>In a smooth and simple motion, a single section of each image in this series is utterly transformed, this piece rotated until it sits precisely upside down with respect to the original scene.</p>

<p>While some feature more complex shapes, in general the process is extremely straightforward and geometry recognizable: squares or circles, centered horizontally (and sometimes vertically) in the frame, turned precisely 180 degrees.</p>

<p><a href="http://witchoria.com/" target="_blank">Victoria Siemer</a> lives in New York City but graduated upstate &#8211; reflecting both country and cities, her modified pictures span both natural and urban landscapes but share common themes and methods. What began as a college thesis about fragmentation of self and emotions has morphed into a larger series of shots and prints.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81626" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/reflected-waves-surfs-up-468x572.jpg" alt="reflected waves surfs up" width="468" height="572" /></p>

<p>While her surrealistic approach includes everything from universes in coffee cups to cliffs suspended in space, this particular group of works is compelling as much for its quiet directness as anything. Without a clear message or meaning, it is up to the viewer to interpret the results and put these fragmented images back together in their mind&#8217;s eye.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-41368" title="building demolisions" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/building-demolisions.jpg" width="468" height="418" /></p>
<p>Philadelphia native <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/werdsnave/">Andrew Evans</a> takes pictures that give a new perspective on the processes of urban deconstruction, showing before, during and after images of once-proud civic structures.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="building ghost architecture cranes" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/building-ghost-architecture-cranes.jpg" width="468" height="575" /></p>
<p>What really brings this haunting black-and-whites to life is that three-step aspect &#8211; not just the building being there and gone, with its surrounding context standing watch, but the short interstitial stays of demolition equipment, semi-demolished rooms and falling rubble along the way.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="building destruction photographs" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/building-destruction-photographs.jpg" width="468" height="588" /></p>
<p>Prominent captures include: The National Building, destroyed to expand the Odd Fellows Temple, Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Pennsylvania Railroad power plant and the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="building demolished before after" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/building-demolished-before-after.jpg" width="468" height="639" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Andrew Evans is an architect by training who is fascinated by construction and destruction alike. He is a lifelong Philadelphian and resides in southwest center city.&#8221;</em> You can see more of his photos on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/werdsnave/">Flickr</a>. Side-note trivia: the destruction of Penn Station in New York City is part of what sparked the historic preservation movement in the United States &#8211; still, for better or for worse, many unique structures are still regularly demolished to this day.</p>
