    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85482" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/space-observatory-seti-468x312.jpg" alt="space observatory seti" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Scientists and alien life seekers alike are all looking to solve the mystery of a distant star, activity around which, according to astronomers including Jason Wright of Penn State University, suggests a &#8220;swarm of megastructures&#8221; (images via SETI).</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85480" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/allan-telescope-array-468x307.jpg" alt="allan telescope array" width="468" height="307" /></p>
<p>While no one has sighted little green men, the <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/forget-water-on-mars-astronomers-may-have-just-found-giant-alien-megastructures-orbiting-a-star-near-a6693886.html">phenomenon is perplexing</a>. &#8220;Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilisation to build,&#8221; says Wright. The puzzle centers around a series of dimming events around a star to which no conventional scientific explanation (such as dust clouds or passing planets) seems to apply. The star is in the wrong stage of maturity to be flickering as it appears to be without some external factor yet to be discovered.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85479" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/seti-superearth-468x351.jpg" alt="seti superearth" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Wright is not alone, and we may not be either. The anomaly was first spotted by citizen volunteers (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Hunters">Planet Hunters</a>) drafted to look for planets around stars through the <a href="http://kepler.nasa.gov/">Kepler Space Telescope</a>, then subsequently confirmed by observing scientists. &#8220;We are looking at [<a href="http://www.space.com/30832-kepler-telescope-alien-megastructure.html">KIC 8462852</a>,  near the Milky Way] with the Allen Telescope Array,&#8221; <a href="http://www.space.com/30855-alien-life-search-kepler-megastructure.html">said Seth Shostak</a>, a senior astronomer at the SETI (<a href="http://www.space.com/30043-seti-search-for-extraterrestrial-intelligence-infographic.html">Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence</a>) Institute in Mountain View, California. &#8220;We’d never seen anything like this star,&#8221; <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2015/10/the-most-interesting-star-in-our-galaxy/410023/">says Tabetha Boyajian</a>, a postdoc at Yale. &#8220;It was really weird. We thought it might be bad data or movement on the spacecraft, but everything checked out.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-85478 size-large" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/space-image-468x312.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>One of the most fascinating things about this find is that this is all so difficult to visualize. We have no high-resolution imagery that would making the determination of &#8216;natural&#8217; versus &#8216;artificial&#8217; easy to make or the problem simpler to understand. Instead, we are left with theories and interpretations of data, which so far imply a non-natural space project that could be anything from an orbital solar array to a space colony under construction or even an outright attempt to reflect light in patterns in order to contact other civilizations. And while there are other possibilities, none of the current nature-centric suggestions hold up to scrutiny as yet. Given the history of such finds, one should expect to be disappointed, but for now the mystery remains a source of excitement for scientists and civilians alike.</p>

<p>With the rise of urbanization, an estimated 80% of the world population has never seen the Milky Way &#8211; and while rural dwellers see thousands of stars on a typical night, those in cities typically see a few dozen at best.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78956" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/night-sky-la-overloook-468x316.jpg" alt="night sky la overloook" width="468" height="316" /></p>

<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/125108525' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>As part of their Skyglow project, astrophotographers Harun Mehmedinovic and Gavin Heffernan taking pictures from around the country in darkened areas where the night sky is visible, in some cases turning them into true-to-life composites showing what the skies above cities would look like with the lights turned off. In other instances, their timelapses show the rotation of Earth against the sky.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78955" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/night-sky-images-468x312.jpg" alt="night sky images" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>Urban light pollution is not just a problem of lost views &#8211; it has been known to interfere with bird migrations and other animal behavior, not to mention sleep disorders and disease correlations in humans. Cities like Phoenix, Arizona, are trying to take back the night sky, dimming non-essential artificial lights to cut energy consumption.</p>

By visiting incredible archaeoastronomy locations like Canyons of the Ancients, Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde, SKYGLOW will explore the relationship between ancient civilizations and the galaxies they worshiped. Can we learn from them? &#8220;</em></p>

<p>Hanging clothes out to dry is a design problem with a long history and many solutions, making it all the more rare to see something like this clever star-shaped approach that addresses the issue with such adeptness.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="space interior clothes horse" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/space-interior-clothes-horse-468x393.jpg" width="468" height="393" /></p>
<p>In some Asian or European regions with more temperate climates, people string their clothes outside to dry, taking maximum advantage of warmth and airflow. Apartment and condo dwellers in colder places often have fewer options &#8211; Aaron Dunkerton of Queensland, Australia, but graduate of Kingston University, in the colder United Kingdom, can relate to both sets of conditions.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="space unfolding clothes rack" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/space-unfolding-clothes-rack-468x502.jpg" width="468" height="502" /></p>
<p>The clever twelve-pointed-star design allows for maximum air circulation and hanging area with a minimum footprint when the drying rack is folded up and stored. A compact collection of aluminum rods strung between plywood supports are unfolded and latched to form an essentially circular shape with space in the middle &#8211; all part of a low-tech spin cycle that takes up less space in your closet, too.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="space saving drying rack" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/space-saving-drying-rack-468x414.jpg" width="468" height="414" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="space circular rack side" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/space-circular-rack-side-468x527.jpg" width="468" height="527" /></p>
<p>More about this unconventional clotheshorse: <em>&#8220;The dimensions of my clothes horse are 56cm long, 32 wide and 23cm high when it is collapsed so it is much easier to store than a conventional clothes airer which are normally awkward sizes and hard to hide when not in use. When in use its dimensions are 56cm deep, 112cm wide and 112cm tall. The shape of my clothes horse when erect allows for good air circulation around the clothes, which will help them to dry faster.&#8221;</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43318" title="star wars real life" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/star-wars-real-life.jpg" width="468" height="432" /></p>
<p>Yes, you can spend the night in Luke Skywalker&#8217;s home, see the hermit habitat of Obi-Wan Kenobi up close, and view other remnants of the original Star Wars movie via a series sets turned since turned into long-standing habitable buildings <em>(contemporary on-location photos above by <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/user/50968?with_photo_id=4917182">Könczöl Gábor</a> and <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/7927342" target="_blank">maciekke</a>).</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43317" title="star wars obiwan luke" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/star-wars-obiwan-luke.jpg" width="468" height="630" /></p>
<h6>(Images by <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/5545978" target="_blank">Hoylen Sue</a>)</h6>
<p><a href="http://www.losapos.com/starwarstunisia">Los Apos</a> provides an introductory guide with coordinates should you find yourself wandering Tunisia &#8211; meanwhile, here are some of the highlights of the journey, including bits and pieces of the fictional Mos Eisley and Espa.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43315" title="star wars settings real" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/star-wars-settings-real.jpg" width="468" height="669" /></p>
<h6>(Images by <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/35881687" target="_blank">Eckart</a> and <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MqkIDSK2qawhnJ30i4qRaA" target="_blank">Michael</a>)</h6>
<p>Some of these buildings survive the first film trilogy, while others were rebuilt for the second series (or first, depending on how you look at it). But why? Because, in many cases, locals saw the structures as entirely serviceable and kept using them for housing, hotels, shops, storage and more.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43314" title="star wars tatooine tunisia" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/star-wars-tatooine-tunisia.jpg" width="468" height="666" /></p>
<h6>(Images by <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ghorfas_of_Medenine.jpg" target="_blank">Bernard Gagnon</a> and <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/10426851" target="_blank">Jean-Marc Matthey</a>)</h6>
<p>Some of the locations cater to fans: <em>&#8220;In Matmata you can actually sleep in Luke&#8217;s home. The Hotel Sidi Driss served as the interior of the Lars homestead. Aunt Beru&#8217;s kitchen is still there, but except for some fiberglass and wooden frames, and the fresco on the dining room ceiling, you won&#8217;t find any props. Even so, it is easy to get excited when sitting in the very same dining room that the Lars family used. The hotel also has a well stocked bar with lots of Star Wars memorabilia and a Star wars inspired menu.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-43316" title="star wars landscape sets" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/star-wars-landscape-sets.jpg" width="468" height="709" /></p>
<h6>(Images by <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/28511970" target="_blank">Roger Noguera Arnau</a>)</h6>
<p>Savvy fans will recognize even building-free locations where Sandcrawlers roamed, Tusken Raiders pounced or Stormtroopers attacked. These are, one might say, the landscapes you are looking for. Still, whether the trip will spoil the fun or enhance the fantasy all depends on the traveler.</p>
