    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119213" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dressbarn-1a-644x481.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="481" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately named <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/09/18/park-like-a-girl-women-frustrated-with-pink-ladies-parking-places/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women</a>&#8216;s wear retailer DressBarn is slamming the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/08/07/close-calls-12-breathtakingly-creative-garage-doors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">door</a> on 650 retail stores in 45 states as sales decline and branding loses focus.</p>
<h4>Barn Storm</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119214" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dressbarn-1b-644x528.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="528" /></p>
<p><a href="https://www.ascenaretail.com/our-brands/dressbarn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DressBarn</a> made its debut in 1962 – a time when American women were flooding into the workforce and unlike the era&#8217;s Mad Men, had a limited choice of workwear options from which to chose from. Founder Roslyn Jaffe&#8217;s bright idea was a hit then&#8230; but a <em>Misses</em> now. Kudos to Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeepersmedia/albums/72157643738357305" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Mozart</a> for the two images above taken in early April of 2014.</p>
<h4>Agri Culture Wars</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119216" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dressbarn-2-644x363.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="363" /></p>
<p>In 1982 the company was listed on NASDAQ (symbol DBRN) and in 2011 the reorganized firm was renamed Ascena Retail Group, Inc. DressBarn was flying high&#8230; or was it? By almost any measure, the American economy has been on a roll for the better part of the past decade. Yet on May 21st of 2019, Ascena <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190520005751/en/Dressbarn-Commence-Wind-Retail-Operations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced the imminent closing</a> of all 650 DressBarn stores. By the way, Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/stevetursi/5071928109/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stevetursi</a>&#8216;s image above illustrates what must be the cheesiest <em>“corporate headquarters”</em> we&#8217;ve ever seen. Just sayin&#8217;.</p>
<h4>Not Makin&#8217; Hay</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119215" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dressbarn-3-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The announcement deals a haymaker (pun intended) to roughly 6,800 employees with the pain spread nationwide as DressBarn has stores in 45 states. <em>“This decision was difficult, but necessary,”</em> explained Steven Taylor, chief financial officer of Dressbarn, <em>“as the DressBarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today&#8217;s retail environment.”</em> One might say management is closing the (Dress)Barn door after the horse has escaped but that would be too obvious, so we won&#8217;t. The store above, located in Torrington, CT and snapped by Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jjbers/29562946118/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JJBers</a> in mid-2018, appears to be getting the jump on the mass-closing.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104571" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/self-driving-shop-644x472.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="472" /></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a tale as old as time, or at least: science fiction films &#8212; an autonomous grocery store on wheels (staffed by a holographic assistant) that can deliver late-night snacks as well as everyday essentials.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104566" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/24-hour-shopping-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The Wheelys &#8220;Moby Mart&#8221; looks the part as well, sporting a trapezoidal shape, illuminated display in front, vintage neon sign on top, and mysteriously uniform boxes on the shelves inside.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104570" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/store-closeup-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>But that retrofuturistic look is just part of the package: fueled by solar panels on the roof, this driverless shopping center operates staff-free 24/7.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/W9IqJOpfa5c?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>When it runs low on stock it returns itself to a warehouse automatically for reloading &#8212; eventually, its makers hope to task a fleet of rooftop drones to do those pickups (maybe they could be extended to make deliveries, too).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104565" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/inside-store-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Like other new grocery store prototypes, there will be no need to check out &#8212; items taken are automatically tallied and added to a shopper&#8217;s bill. If you need any help, the aptly named Hol (a holographic store assistant) is on hand to assist.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104568" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/summon-store-644x360.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="360" /></p>
<p>To top it all off, the Moby Mart has the potential to be carbon-negative, at least in terms of its urban travels &#8212; soaking up the sun for fuel, it also captures and cleans smog on its grocery runs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104569" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/closed-store-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>A project of <a href="https://www.f6s.com/himalayafyformerlynraffr">Himalayafy</a>, <a href="http://www1.hfut.edu.cn/en/">Hefei University</a> and <a href="https://wheelyscafe.com/">Wheelys</a> the first prototype is currently being tested out in Shanghai, a sweet spot for cyberpunk fans but a bit far for some of us to travel. But don&#8217;t worry: if all goes well your city may get one soon, too.</p>

<p>An <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/04/17/fruitless-10-abandoned-roadside-fruit-produce-stands/" target="_blank">orange</a> by any other name doesn&#8217;t taste the same, as the owners of these <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/10/21/pretty-in-pink-trumps-border-wall-as-envisioned-by-mexican-architects/" target="_blank">Trump</a>-named but otherwise unaffiliated stores and business can truly attest.</p>

<p>Take <a href="http://www.vosizneias.com/236108/2016/04/12/new-york-businesses-that-share-trump-name-get-swept-up-in-the-circus/" target="_blank">Trump Tobacco</a>, a Huntington Beach, California store selling cigars, cigarettes and smoking accessories. One wonders what The Donald would think of the 10-year-old business founded, owned and operated by Mohammad Yousefi, an Afghan-born U.S. citizen and card-carrying &#8211; well, business-card-carrying at least &#8211; Muslim. <em>&#8220;I chose the name Trump thinking, he&#8217;s a rich guy with a lot of buildings, so maybe I&#8217;ll get something out of his name,&#8221;</em> <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3535346/Businesses-share-Trump-swept-circus.html" target="_blank">explained Yousefi</a>. Er, maybe a little TMI, dude. Trump (and his lawyers) may have small hands but they&#8217;ve got very good ears.</p>
<h4>Trump Hair</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98327" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-business-2a-644x483.jpg" alt="trump-business-2a" width="644" height="483" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98329" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-business-2d-644x483.jpg" alt="trump-business-2d" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;d think &#8220;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Trump-1014701085210565/">TrUMp Hair</a>&#8221; &#8211; their spelling &#8211; would be the ultimate Trump-named business but no: we&#8217;re saving that one for the very end. Even so, calling your beauty salon &#8220;Trump Hair&#8221; might be expected to provoke the odd giggle if it weren&#8217;t for the fact the hairstylist is located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98330" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-business-2c-644x362.jpg" alt="trump-business-2c" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Distanced, literally, from the American political scene, this Japanese salon will likely escape the fate of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNY5X7a-Ows">KingsHead Salon</a> in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.</p>
<h4>Trump Lawn &amp; Land</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98331" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-business-3b-644x484.jpg" alt="trump-business-3b" width="644" height="484" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98332" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/trump-business-3d-644x824.jpg" alt="trump-business-3d" width="644" height="824" /></p>
<p>You may have heard or seen reports of Trump supporters, fed up with having their lawn signs stolen, actually mowing the name &#8220;TRUMP&#8221; into their lawns. Don&#8217;t blame <a href="http://trumplawnandland.com/">Trump Lawn and Land Company</a> for such bio-expressive shenanigans; the York, PA family-owned landscaping business has been conducting an entirely different type of grass-roots organizing since 2004.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97978" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/target-vertical-farms-644x335.jpg" alt="target-vertical-farms" width="644" height="335" /></p>
<p>At the convergence of the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/06/12/ikea-indoor-gardens-produce-food-year-round-for-homes-restaurants/">localvore</a> and <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/03/18/sustainable-food-in-the-city-10-smart-urban-farm-designs/">vertical farming</a> movements, Target&#8217;s new in-store micro-farms are positioned to offer the freshest possible produce to consumers. On offer: leafy greens and herbs initially but eventually also potatoes, beets, zucchini, tomatoes peppers and more.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97976" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/city-farm-design-644x385.jpg" alt="city-farm-design" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>In collaboration with the MIT Media Lab and IDEO, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://foodfuturecolab.ideo.com/">Food + Future CoLab</a> will be testing their indoor production technology in stores around the country starting next spring. Target aims to leverage its scale to optimize their approach over time while also using their strategy to attract conscientious consumers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97977" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/vertical-farming-in-store-644x385.jpg" alt="vertical-farming-in-store" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Among other advantages, local and in-store aquaponic setups require less water and no pesticides as compared to outdoor alternatives. Also, since stores are already temperature-controlled for food storage and customer consideration, heating and cooling are effectively taken care of without additional energy expenditures.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-97975" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/vertical-farm-store-644x442.jpeg" alt="vertical-farm-store" width="644" height="442" /></p>
<p>Neither vertical farming nor close-to-source produce are new. Huge vertical farms have enjoyed success from <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/10/06/farm-to-desk-vertical-urban-farm-shares-tokyo-office-space/">Japan</a> to <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/06/05/worlds-biggest-indoor-vertical-farm-near-nyc-to-use-95-less-water/">New Jersey</a> and rooftop farms often provide food for local communities or restaurants and hotels below. Still, like a similar project in <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/03/31/vertical-micro-farms-fresh-produce-grown-in-berlin-groceries/">Germany</a>, this takes the idea to the next level, offering fresh organic crops alongside conventional ones right in a retail grocery shopping outlet. As populations continue to urbanize, demand for city-grown food (without the transportation costs and with appeal to local-oriented eaters) will only continue to grow.</p>

<p>Designed by Shanghai studio XL-Muse (images Shao Feng), these floor-to-ceiling shelves in the Yangzhou Zhongshuge bookshop drew inspiration from the winding and reflective Zhen Yuan river nearby, as well as the area&#8217;s arched bridges.</p>

<p>&#8220;In the past, guided by water, many literati and poets visited and gathered here,&#8221; said XL-Muse, and these regional infrastructural icons were &#8220;used to be the guiding factor of culture and commerce, and they represent that the bookstore is the bond between humans and books at the same time.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94176" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/book-wrapping-volumes-644x460.jpg" alt="book wrapping volumes" width="644" height="460" /></p>

<p>The tunnel opens up into a vast library-worth realm of further reading in the cavernous interior, with architectural elements echoing the arches of the entry corridor. The rounded-and-arched theme is carried through in thin pillars and sloping displays.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94172" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/book-children-reading-644x460.jpg" alt="book children reading" width="644" height="460" /></p>

<p>Additional interior design dimensions come into play in themed reading spaces for children and adults, with starry ceilings and other humanizing elements. Here, furniture colors and shapes soften these spaces and make them more comfortable and inviting for longer-term occupation.</p>
